How I installed SR clocks in my Starlet Sportif (Rev counter) | Toyota Starlet 4efe turbo build.

Installing late model Toyota Starlet EP91 SR Instrument cluster into my early model Starlet Sportif turbo conversion. Needed a rev counter installed in the Starlet, so was lucky enough to find a set of SR clocks from a 98-99 car. Pretty simple to swap the cluster. Only a few wires to move around to get them functioning correctly as the wiring for early EP91's (96-97) is different to late model (98-99).
P.S. The handbrake light is fine!

Thanks Alex, I haven't installed Glanza clocks in an n/a starlet so can't confirm unfortunately. There is someone in this comments section that said they've done it so I'd check with them first. I have the wiring diags. for N/A clocks which I can send if you hit me up on instagram. The easiest way to get the glanza wiring is to use the plastic circuit on the back of the clocks as a guide to follow. Write down where each of the plug contacts goes to on the cluster. It's easy to trace the circuit to its bulb or gauge etc. then you have pinouts for car and cluster to swap the wires around. The only thing is, there will be no feed for the boost lights.

The easiest way to figure it out is to compare the plastic circuit board on the back of the original clocks and new clocks. Trace down from the contact at the top to the bulb/gauge its connected to and compare. If the contacts go to different bulbs / gauges on the clocks then you need to write down the wire contacts purpose on paper for both sets and then move the necessary wires to the correct location. Not difficult, just takes time.

This video details fitting 98 spec n/a clocks in a 96 spec car. I have never checked Glanza clocks to see if they are the same wiring swaps, but I have read online they are not. The n/a wiring loom has 2 x feeds for the water temp. gauge, one needs to be connected to the gauge. If the "spare" wire is not moved to a correct "blank" on the board it can spike the gauge I think.

Unfortunately not. The glanza clocks are different and getting the rev counter to work might need a resistor in the clocks replacing according to the guide I found on UKSO. Never tried the swap myself. Its a lot easier to use N/A rev counter clocks, also the Glanza redlines at 7500 and the n/a's at 6500 so it looks a bit goofy imho.

For anyone thinking of doing this themselves, ive done it a few times now. Take the steering wheel off, makes removing the clocks a thousand times easier. Take the air tunnel out after you take the trim piece from under the steering column, more space to manoeuvre Speedo cable first, squeeze the clip on the left of it as youve got your hand on it (its right side as youre sitting in the driver seat), youll feel it, push it up and out. Then unscrew the clocks from mount, pull foward and unclip the harnesses, theres enough slack on them for it. Reverse to put it back together. If you own Paseo clocks, they arent plug and play, but only 2 wires need cut and they look fantastic edit : I also believe, if you get clocks from a starlet cd or gls, they have rev counters, look identical im pretty sure and they dont need any rewiring, but dont quote me
@dan91sgarage
@dan91sgarage Год назад
Just remember, that removing and installing airbags is not something to be taken lightly. If an airbag deploys it can cause serious injury which is why I chose to leave it in place. You also have the added hassle of re-aligning the steering wheel when putting it back together, although the added clearance would make the clocks removal easier as you said, I didn't think it was worth the risk / extra effort.

You didn't like to remove the steering wheel for this operation? For me it is a bummer when I break plastic tabs so I prefer to remove as many pieces that are relevant to create clearance for proper removal and install. Officially Toyota recommends to remove the four 14mm bolts for the steering column mounting. With this piece hanging 50mm lower or so things are much easier. The four bolts for the steering column should be tightened back to 25 Nm.
@dan91sgarage
@dan91sgarage 3 месяца назад
I didn't need to and messing with airbags can be dangerous and not something to be taken lightly. Nothing broke for me, it was just a bit fiddly. Each to their own.
