I'm definitely going to try singing softly for a while. Trying to sing with more power doesn't seem to be getting me anywhere.

I started singing when i was 14. I’m 19 now and I’ve improved a lot over the years. Since then I’ve learned how to take better care of my voice, singing clearly, learning a little about my range on my own, thorough warm ups. Etc. I improved by practicing. I’ve never lost my voice from singing but I have had constriction of my vocal cords from oversinging. I started giving my voice more rest and it has done me wonders. I still want to get a voice coach to perfect my voice and learn how to use the best and correct technique.

You're right, singing pianissimo requires a lot more breath control than belting out into a fortissimo range. I sing in the choir at my church (also a baptist church, one of those quaint, white New England buildings that belongs on a postcard, especially now that all the fall leaves are showing), and even though there are half or less as many men as there are women, some of them used to be football players or construction workers and they can be really loud, to the point where they overpower us.

I appreciate this story so much. As someone who has a weighted voice, singing softer really helps. It is better to start softer then add when necessary than to go full force and pull back. Thank you Eric

Eric!! Double triple super like!!! I can totale relate to your Story: when I was a kid, the director of our gospel choir (who happened to be also my piano teacher, and yes, goddamn, he nailed that Job and taught me how to play piano, he is the god of Piano, so I trusted him with the singing as well), well this man constantly asked me to push harder with my voice. And yes, it gave me self confidence as a Young girl to be able to sing a solo against a 40 people choir WITHOUT a microphone- and the power in my voice is something that I enjoy from Time to time- but I just realized that this was damaging my vocal chords when I wasnt able to speak for one week after each concert. I simply wasnt educated to prepare and Build my Voice properly..... singing along with your videos has really helped me, and this video is a new motivation to start exercising again... so: thank you from Germany!!!

I'm glad you're back. You've helped me a lot in improving my vocal technique. I'm not "amazing"; I still have trouble in some areas, but you have helped me a lot. I go through spells where I don't do vocal warm ups or putting the exercises into practice, and I kinda chastise myself about it. But when I do them, my voice is more agile and free. And I can do more things easier. So I really appreciate your help and videos. As I am currently not able to afford voice classes, I just use the videos I find on RU-vid.

Eric, i first started at this church and joined the choir. Of course, i am much older joining this choir after so many years being in any choir. My first day of the praise team and i ended up horse afterwards...knew this wasn't good. After hearing your story in the church is a true wake up call to my experience. So i will be speaking with my church director of working on vocal training to find my vocal range. Thanks so much Eric, and truly touch on the realities of vocalization which is so important.

I started with your free courses and it was a journey learning how to sing. Airflow and support where king in my transformation. I couldn't sing on pitch and I pushed a lot. I found out that pitch was natural and all you had to do was control the airflow. It's a lot of unwiring after that and I have to constantly focus where my sound comes from. A good exercise that helps me is to put my fingers on the bottom of my lips and do the OO vowel. Power is really in pianissimo. It's conscious control of your airflow.

I can contend to ur message here. I myself am obsessed with daily vocalization to strengthen tone and agility. Speaking of agility, part of my daily vocalization routine include ur fast riff and runs exercises "e to ah" on the do to sol scale. Love it and it has helped my flexibility work much! Ur the man bro

Hearing your story has motivated me more than just watching a vocal warm up video on it's own. Part of me has been resisting practice / exercises, and recognising the similarity to you makes me feel inspired that if I put in the effort to practice daily that I really could improve my voice Thank you for sharing your story :)

I’ve always heard a voice in my head that I can’t hear when I sing out loud. Sometimes I’m ok and others I feel like sound off key all the time. I’m now sitting down and trying to learn how to access that inner voice. I’m really good at impersonating different ranges talking but not singing.

I absolutely LOVE to sing. I struggle sometimes. I'm not the worst that anyone has heard but I'm not the best either. lol. I refused vocal training as well but now I'm beginning to regret it. I was discouraged because I felt that at 34 years of age, I'm getting too old for them. Then, magic happened and I ran across this video. I feel inspired to begin training. I'm not looking to become rich from singing but only to get better vocally. Thank you so much for this video.

Omg... This was my life right here... Sang my voice away, literally.. and pushed and pushed till I completely lost my range and I developed nodules. I went to an ENT and he told me I had to stop singing and talking for 2-3 months or have surgery. I have kids so the no talking part was near impossible. But I came off of the choir and praise team that I sang on. Then started to research ways to get rid of the nodules without surgery. Apple cider vinegar helped to bring down the swelling (drank a tblsp everyday) and gargling with coconut oil/ oil pulling really helped. When I could actually sing without major pain I started doing vocal exercises and my range came back and got better. A friend of mine had given me one of your CD's yeeeeeears ago @Eric Arceneaux before I developed nodules and like you I thought it was unnecessary and like you I had to learn the hard way.😑 To be honest vocal exercises are not my favorite thing to do, so I have to force myself to do them some days, but they really really do work. They sound crazy when I'm doing them and my kids mock me, lol, but they are definitely necessary!!! I have a RU-vid playlist of vocal exercises and warmups that I do and I have a couple of CDs. Keep doing what you're doing sir. Thank you.

I actually had very similar idea of singing! I didn't want the vocal lessons not because I thought it is only for classical singers. I was just afraid that a teacher will take away my individuality in singing in order to make me sing what is said is the right way to sing. So instead of taking lessons I decided I want to record my own songs and develop a way of singing that would be pleasant to me. As I later found out, the more effort I put to my own way of singing the less people were liking it - I've heard that I have a good voice when I was singing effortless, and the trap was that I didn't like how I sound effortless. However I started getting vocal lessons since half a year and the improvement is unbelievable! I am so glad I've changed my mind!

We call that a sensory illusion. Often, when a singer is producing their tone with a great deal of muscular constriction in the upper body, sound is trapped within their body creating a richer tone that only the singer can hear. However, what comes out to listeners (or a recording device) is a fraction of your true resonance. Very simply, we've found that the voice you hear will match the voice others hear as you start releasing your throat, tongue, and jaw muscles to allow your voice to be liberated. So don't get frustrated. The voice you hear is real. The task now is simply to grant it freedom enough to be heard by others.

I’m a broke college student, and decided that the best present I could give my girlfriend is to spend money on the next semester. But then I saw your vocal warm up videos and realized that my voice is free. Thank you so much for helping me give my gift to others! Also, I’m a personal trainer, and since most people work a desk job, drive a car, and sit down on their couch, they don’t know how to breathe. I’ve educated myself on this topic before, but watching your videos gave me a deeper insight into internal cueing and external verification. Maybe someday I’ll teach someone how to breathe by learning how to vocalize! So double, triple thanks.
