Americans who think the American way is the only way are a big pet peeve of mine lol, “learnt” is how it’s SPELT in the UK, the same way we spell colour with a U and say jumper instead of sweater, there’s more than one way of spelling a lot of English words, google it before you leave a rude comment about it

I myself am American. Yes you're right. I've learned a bit over the years how certain things are either called something different or spelled differently. Learning languages is always fascinating to learn! One thing I just learned from you is that spelt is different. Thanks for sharing mikan! As I'm currently learning Japanese I have looked up to you. To me you are wonderful in speaking the language. I do agree with you when it comes to the word fluent. I personally see you as pretty fluent and that's what I look up to. Please keep up the good work mikan you're an inspiration to me. :)

I'm Turkish and me too. Like when I think about Turkish it's really hard for someone who isn't Turkish. Just like Japanese. I feel like learning English is easier than learning Japanese though. At least I didn't need to learn 3 alphabets... 😅 and I think I know enough English to explain myself. I'm not good at English compared to you or other people whose native languages are English but I believe if you want you can learn anything. Sorry I just realized that I wasn't really talking about the topic you said. Sooooo I think the important part is in a daily conversation you use maybe 200-300 differrent words. (I don't know I just made a guess.) If you can communicate with other people it doesn't matter if the language is hard or not.

People tell me how fluent I am in English and I'm always trying to just get even better and actually fully become fluent and as comfortable with it as I am when I speak German which is my native language. To get to my current level has taken years and that are just two different Germanic languages. I also speak Spanish(or at least working on it) and am currently learning Swedish just for fun and it gets easier but also somehow not.

I'm so jealous of people who learned multiple languages as kids. I learned french from the ages of 5-15 but now I can barely speak it. I know one 4-year-old kid whose first language is english, but she was born in china so she speaks mandarin, and now she lives in quebec and is learning french. And another 4-year-old in the same family whose first languages are arabic and english, but now he also lives in quebec and is starting to learn french. They are so lucky to be so multilingual while their brains are still developing!

Its never to late for a new language. My First language is german and I never showed any interest in anything else. Up until grade 10? I dont know. I was really really bad in school where we learned english starting at grade 3... I taught myself the language with movies and books. Of course it helped that we had to do the grammar in school... I had 4 years of a gap between grade 10 and grade 12. German schooling system allows that. I worked those years and skipped grade 11. Anyways I was always almost failing English up until grade 10. Then in grade 12 I was suddenly the best (most of the time) ... What I am trying to say.dont give up. It's never too late to learn a new language

I was raised speaking german, but cuz my family is turkish, I picked up the turkish language too, and when I started getting into comics that were in english, my english also became fluent. I started learning french in school and japanese at home, a few years ago. Well that all sounds good and all, but cuz I speak and study so much languages, my german became more bad. Even tho I live in germany, I tend to use english phrases and often translate english grammar into german. I also began to think of the sentence first, before saying it. I often stutter and talk nonesense in other languages too. So it also has downsides being multilingual. You would never hear me talking without being confused once cuz of what I just said. lmao

I was a low N3 when I moved to Japan several years ago. Enrolled in a Japanese language school and a month later, got a part time job to pay for my schooling. I was literally the only foreigner in the company, one of the few English speakers in my entire class level at school, and I lived in the countryside. You bet I picked up Japanese quickly! Now I work in Japan as a full time translator and I just got my N1. Even then, I don’t think I’ll ever consider myself fluent! Great hearing your journey, Mikan. I wish you all the best!

The formal good morning in Japanese is: おはようございます。And the informal way of good morning (what you'd say to close friends) is: おはよう。you say the formal version like: ohayou gozaimasu. And the informal version like ohayou. The u only has a very slight pronunciation so it would be pronounced like: o-ha-yo-ou. And good night is おやさみなさい。oyasaminasai. You would pronounce it as it is written really. It only has one way of saying it. And good afternoon/ hello is こんにちは。konnichiwa. The wa at the end is the character for ha but like in English a c can make a ch sound and in Japanese a ha can make a wa sound! Yes in Japanese is hai はい and no in Japanese is iie いいえ。There's some Japanese for ya! :)

i feel like i best way to really learn a language is to- ngl, live in it. not only would you be motivated and forced to speak, read, converse in it but they provide you with the schooling. I learned both the katakana and hiragana alphabet in a day but that doesn't necessarily mean I could understand something I am reading. 😭 Don't leant from romaji, it'll mess with your pronouciations. Till this day, I still never understood how I was able to speak cantonese or how my parents taught me growing up, I am sure there were no workbooks and such.

I'm 14 I started learning Japanese when I was 13. I know all of the Hiragana part, and can formulate a few sentences. I can also pick out words in what people are saying in Japanese. So.. I was wondering... am I learning at a quick enough pace to know the majority of what people are saying, read Japanese, and speak it fluently enough to hopefully find classes by the time I am 18? Edit: I also used duolingo to teach me the most of the words I know, almost all of Hiragana part, and some of Katakana, but later switched to worksheets. My mom printed for me online because I wanted some online so badly! (LOL)
@ChibiChidorii
@ChibiChidorii 4 года назад
I mean if your goal is to be able to go through life in Japan when you are 18 then I guess you are ok at that pace if you keep studying and don't drop it. If you want to be FLUENT as in being able to do a N1 proficiency test then i guess it's better if you pick up your pace. I think the average when studying regularly is to learn all the kana and basic phrases (introductions, where is this, what is that, what time is it, etc) in between 1 and 3 months. Then once you dominate hiragana completely you should start learning basic kanji and pepper it in your sentences and studying. After 6 month's you should be able to survive in Japan and have conversations if you study constantly (i suggest getting a book and do one lesson a week and going over it every day or every other day).

I recommend the bunpo app on the app store(not sure for android though), I use this and it's especially great for sentence structure. Lirer is another app but it's more towards kanji, it gives you a list of kanji to memorize from. I'm pretty sure h the best way is to immerse yourself into japanese more(much better if you live in japan!) learning a language is great when you have someone native who teaches you. It's the greatest thing to ask for. Sadly I don't have have any of that besides those two apps lol. 😭✨ let's do this, it may take years but, don't worry! we'll make it, one day we'll be able to take the N1 -JLPT test. 🙈

I also love how you acknowledged that learning a new language is hard, especially Japanese, because just from reading comments on past videos where you've spoken Japanese I see a lot of people who think you kinda just learnt overnight when in reality you have to put so much effort lol

When you can have a conversation without problem in the language you learn then you are fluent in the language. Even for native speakers of a language there are still things that can be learned. This I have heard from an Italian who still can learn new things in the Italian language as a native speaker of the language I am fluent in English and German and there are still many things that I can learn in these languages even when I have no problem with speaking the languages

I started learning Japanese a week ago (I've always wanted to but I'm currently in law school in France and no Japanese courses are available) I bought a workbook, learned Hiragana which I found very easy but I do struggle remembering katakana ( I haven't really started learning Kanji though, I know about ten kanjis but that's it) I used an app called "Japanese" (blue Pinguin on the icon) and I found it very helpful, I can now form sentences ( for example, I can say "I will eat sushi tomorrow/ I watched something on TV yesterday etc) and I've been binge watching Terrace House as well. I can't wait to progress even more and hopefully someday become fluent. (If I made any mistakes it's because I'm French)

I completely understand your struggle in your first year without speaking Japanese! I’m from a Japanese-brazilian family and I moved to Japan in 2011 without knowing much Japanese at all. I knew the basics and maybe 100 kanji. I started on the 3rd of 7 Japanese course levels in my university and it took something between one and two years to be comfortable speaking Japanese. I’m very happy to hear that you’re from Kurdish family that was based in Sweden. I’m married to a Swede now and I’m learning Swedish! I must say it’s been a struggle for me since the pronunciation is hard. My Japanese and French skills are going downhill now that I’m learning Swedish 😂 my dream is to come back to japan one day! Wish the best for you! Lycka till med dina studier på japanska! Jag önskar att du njuter av Japan så mycket som möjligt!

If you want to know: Yes and No. I don’t suggest using anime to learn Japanese with anime because they use words that Japan rarely use in everyday conversations. This includes Manga, J-Drama, etc. You should learn with JapanesePod101, books, classes, etc.

You need to receive more input before you even think about outputting and constructing your own sentences. Babies don't learn grammar from textbooks or practice constructing sentences, it doesn't work that way. I strongly suggest watching content without subtitles such as anime or drama (or at least with japanese subtitles) and watch a lot of RU-vid content. Until you've immersed yourself with a lot of content then you'll know when you're ready to output.

I also use apps to learn hiragana, katakana and just basic words and sentences to have a kick start for when I enroll.😊

Vad kul att du vill lära dig Japanska, har själv börjat studera Japanska för några månader sen och tycker att Anime hjälper mycket tillsammans med en hemsida som är lite som Duolingo fast mycket bättre; elon.io heter den, funkar jättebra i mobilen, och den sparar allt som man lärt sig och ställer återkommande frågor om det. Rekommenderar animen Beastars, det är ett riktigt bra drama om samhällsproblem i ett samhälle med djurfolk uppdelat i rovdjur och bytesdjur.

I really recommend Assimil to start, it's not perfect, but it reaaaally helps getting into the language's structure in a really natural way, so you get to understand easily the meaning of things you read or listen to. Then I think it should be paired up with Minna no Nihongo, in order to improve conversation skills. I'm studying this way and I feel like I'm improving really fast! So I really recommend it for beginners (But it's better to learn Hiragana and Katakana from apps before you start it).

The part where you say not to worry about not learning a language quick enough: THANK YOU! My Japanese teacher, I love her to bits, but she always makes me feel like a failure or inadequate for not learning at her speeds. I don't think I'm bad at Japanese at all in terms of speaking and listening, but my Kanji skills are not very good and I'm really trying my best to grasp it. I always worry about asking her for help bc I'm like how you were where I feel really shy and also embarrassed. You really reminded me not to worry, just bc I'm not as quick doesn't mean I won't get there :)

I have a JLPT N1 and I wouldn't call myself "fluent," so I get you totally when you say you don't feel comfortable using that term. I totally agree that anime and manga are great supports, in a lot of ways anime is like the easy mode of listening because they enunciate perfectly at all times. It's a great stepping stone that helps you get used to hearing Japanese and hearing new words. One thing I love in Japan is they have book-off and you can get manga for a few hundred yen. I've always been a bookworm but book-off is a candy store to me. Now I also use free apps like Comico and the Pixiv app. The outfit today kinda reminds me of Miko clothes - the red/white is very much the color.
