How I Lose Money to Make Money Selling Bulk Singles on TCGplayer

Other than the question of "Where do you get your bulk, and can I have some?" the question I'm most often asked is something along the lines of "How can you possibly be making money at this?" It's a question I'm very empathetic to because it was exactly the question I was asking a couple years ago, when I first started transitioning away from buylist picking and into scaling up listing bulk to TCGplayer. In this video, I explain why even if I do lose a little on some small fraction of orders, and then spend the time to ship those lossy orders, I still come out positive in a holistic sense. There's an argument to be made (and it often is) that if you make every aspect of your business not lose money, then the business as a whole won't lose money. It's hard to disagree with that, but there is an alternative argument that sometimes you can be okay with losing a little money here and there in order to take advantage of the opportunity to make more money later.
My website www.tcgbulkkings.com is the central hub to all my various social media enterprises. It's also got the bulk market information that I use to watch how the bulk market shifts over time. With the addition of the Shop, people can buy cards and things directly from me, and now bringing the membership service in-house rather than depending on a separate platform like Patreon I feel will really go a long way to making the site a destination for lots of people going forward. I hope you like the new additions! If you want to buy from the Shop or sell bulk to me, make sure you at least have a Free account, and if you want to support what I'm doing, or just get a decent discount in the Shop and a bit of free merch, go ahead and sign up for one of the Memberships! One thing I do for larger orders is I break them into smaller batches. Like someone buys 30 cards, I ship two PWEs with 15 cards each. That way I’m not spending $4+ to ship a package

I've been watching some passive income/finance bro youtube stuff and they always talk about how much money you have to spend on advertising or that being a hurdle. I don't think people really think about how much TCGPlayer sets up for you to ease the process that you don't have to do any advertising/marketing for and that you get this "captive moment" from someone who is already interested in your products that goes directly to their house. Most marketing people would kill for that. You just kinda gotta have cards. Even the supplies; I have a ton of extra top loaders I felt wasteful throwing away from ordering cards before I started selling. I think people often say it is more work to sell your cards than to just get $10/1000 cards or whatever LGS's typically do, but if you have the obsessiveness to play MTG you have the power to organize and sell your cards.
@TCGBulkKings

Can I ask you a random question a problem I am dealing with atm with my tcg player store which is how I found your channel? I had a buyer buy 400 bulk cards from my store at once and Idk how to ship that out without it being a massive loss due to shipping costs to ship out so many cards *buyer only paid 1.30 for shipping cuz it was only "singles"*. How do you handle orders like that in your store? Would this be one of those cases of it being jus an advertisement? or am I missing something with how to ship this or how tcg player works when it comes to its Small/medium/large/extra large orders?
@TCGBulkKings
@TCGBulkKings Год назад
You should be able to put 60-80 cards in a team bag, and then put those team bags in a bubble mailer or a flat rate small box or even a BCW 1 row. Make sure they aren't going to move around or anything. Shipping for that should be $7-10, and if your order for that many cards is over $20, you should be making a few cents per card, which is better than some 2-card orders

Hello, thanks for this amazing information! I am a small online store in the Netherlands. In Europe we have Cardmarket instead of tcgplayer. On cardmarket you can change the shipping price but the shipping is €1,01 in the netherlands and €1,65 in Europe from my country. Cardmarket automaticly adds €0,30 on shipping for material costs and time. So how should I price my bulk Pokemon cards? And should I leave shipping the way it is or change it?
@TCGBulkKings
@TCGBulkKings 9 месяцев назад
I really wish I could advise you, but honestly I really don't know enough about shipping in the European market to be any kind of authority. Personally, I think the psychological friction caused in the buyer by there being a charge for shipping outweighs the time saved by charging more. So my personal philosophy (which I admit may be different for others) is to charge as little for shipping as possible, any time I sell something online. Work the cost into your asking price for the items. I can't access CardMarket here so I don't really know how best to do that in detail for that platform, but generally I would advise setting your shipping charges as low as you can tolerate.

I prefer the always buying model, picking up smaller more easily processed chunks at a time. I've gone too long with a huge 'death pile' as they call it in the eBay seller world that has buried money in it but I can't get to it because it's too big, and I'm too neurodivergent to just go ham on it when it gets too big. Hopefully my newer model and processes make things easier for me

On the topic of Direct. What do you do with cards that are consistently "out of stock" for direct? These cards seem to never sell and I am struggling to find a way to move those cards.
@TCGBulkKings
@TCGBulkKings Год назад
This may be a disappointing answer, but I wait. My business model doesn't need every card to move, it's based on the idea that the fast movers will cover the slow movers, so the slow movers are basically a free roll. If you need to hurry them along, you could simply take them down and accumulate them till you can send bulk to a bulk buyer. You could lower prices, but you risk selling them all at a loss. Or you can wait till the market helps you out - which may be years

Hey! I've a couple of questions: 1) So TCGplayer has some soft baseline requirements before they accept you into the Direct program. What did you do to ramp up to those requirements? I've a store of my own, but I don't quite have the weekly throughput yet. 2) Do you personally collect cards as well as selling them? If so, how do you manage which cards go to your personal collection vs your store? I'm asking more from an accounting perspective, as a good portion of the collections I buy for my store go directly to my collection. TIA!
@TCGBulkKings

I applied waaaaaaay before knowing about or being close to the requirements. I was denied like the noob I was, and I simply carried on jamming inventory in as fast as I could to grow. When you factor time to ship out the orders that fall out of direct, do you still find it worthwhile. Here in California where minimum wage is quite high and I figure someone packing could get through 20 orders an hour that are non direct I find it as a large loss to sell things that are sub .50cents additionally there will be times when buyers will abuse cards that are sub .05 and place a large non direct order which pushes the weight of the order beyond the non-tracked thresh-hold resulting in a 3.6-$5 label which costs more than the entire orders return
@TCGBulkKings
@TCGBulkKings 5 месяцев назад
Yes. Minimum wage is too low, but it's still worth it for me. There are some orders that lose a little bit of money, but it's still worth it for me. There seems to be this illusion that almost all the orders that fall out of Direct are these tiny lossy orders. In reality it's 15-30% of those orders, and they lose on average $.05 each. It's really soon after that threshold that the payout overwhelms the $.30 portion of the fees

you are correct. every card has a value and every card has a buyer. for example...... if someone is selling you 1000 or 5000 cards for 100 or less as bulk? they are pretty much throwing away hundreds of dollars away. the problem with this is....... it takes TIME AND EFFORT TO LIST 5000 1cent cards. get it? how much will it take you to list 1000 cards? how about 5000 cards? what about 10,000 cards? you know how long it took me to catalogue all 10,100 cards that i currently have? FOUR YEARS!!!!!! yeah 4 years..... its just a time consuming event; and even after typing in all 10,000 cards. i have to sleeve those cards. which is also another reason; why my whole collection is valued at $6300' but i only spent about $2000 in buying packs and what not. in the end. is it worth the time and effort to catalogue and list 1000 cards , even though many are a penny ? @TCGBulkKings
@TCGBulkKings Месяц назад
If your Direct experiences reflects most that I've heard, what will happen is that you will get lots and lots of orders when you switch it on, but you won't need to ship them all the next day. You will in all likelihood drop to having to ship yourself 1-3 orders per day, but then have a big shipment to send out once every week or two, depending on the demand on your cards and their value. If you can commit to shipping a large package (that is, several hundred cards) every few days, then it will save you time and money both. If that's not something you can work out, then it may not be best for you. Also, you can just try it out, and always switch it off if it doesn't work for you, if you get overwhelmed, or you just don't like the vibe. I honestly suggest you just experiment with it and see if you like it or not. There's almost no chance of it messing you up, because you can just stop if it seems like it's going that way Best of luck!

As a direct seller myself, I am always watching your videos and thinking that maybe I should start selling my bulk on direct, but the hurdle isn't as much the shipping side of it, but the sorting and listing. Buying bulk at $6/1000, then even if all 1000 cards sell at 10 cents each, that's only 44 dollars profit after fees. When you take that 44 dollars, vs the time it takes to sort, grade, list, and pack, how much are you making per hour of time spent? I know your making money, but is it enough to be worth the time spent? Love the content!
@TCGBulkKings
@TCGBulkKings Год назад
I appreciate the thought that's gone into this comment. My response may not hit right, because I feel like it's coming from a different mindset. But here goes: When you get decent at sorting, listing, shipping, the amount of labor involved in eventually flipping those 1000 cards isn't much more than a couple hours, so even in a by-the-hour estimate it's not too bad, and sure beats flipping burgers. But also, the 1000 card test scenario isn't really as helpful as you'd think. Partly because you aren't going to get that $44 or whatever tomorrow for listing it today, and also you aren't going to have to put out that time all at once either. You are going to be listing another 1000 cards or more every day, and that larger and larger inventory synergizes with itself, it compounds with itself. Not just in the dollars per day stacked up that gets made from each thousand listed, but also in the fact that having the bigger inventory will lead to a faster inventory turn and larger transactions because you have more products the customers want. I hope that helps clarify my thought process, and why I don't think my whole project is a waste of time. Cheers!

Would love to know about what your packing process looks like. For a single card I place it in a perfect fit penny sleeve $0.015, then into an unbranded shipping shield (just starting out) $0.10, with the packing slip $0.02, inside an envelope $0.031, with a stamp $0.62. Overall this costs me $0.7725. If I listed this card at $0.05 as a marketplace seller (non direct) I would pay $0.30 + 2.5% ($0.01). Customer pays $1.04, I pay $1.07, resulting in a $0.03 loss. Would it not be worth it to set your minimum threshold at $0.10 vs $0.05 as this would make the bare minimum for an order $0.005 allowing you to break even.

Quick Question: For a seller on TCGPlayer that is able to be profitable on orders of +/- $0.05 using there own shipping methods. Would the Direct program be a right fit for that seller? My thought is this; if a seller can have a sale of $0.05 with .99 shipping for a total of $1.04 subtract Fees ($0.44) for a total of $0.60. If this seller can still make more than $0.05 after shipping costs on their own method, What incentive would they have to take $0.025 from Direct? Is your website through TCGplayer’s pro feature or do you have a separate website that is synced to TCGplayer? I started selling a few months ago and had a lot of sales very quickly. Was making money fast. Most of which I used I put back into the business. Now that I’m a level 4 seller, I started listing bulk singles and now just about all my sales are just a couple a week for 1 or 2 5 cent cards. I’m losing money on the fees alone. Then after shipping I’m getting killed. What can I do to change this or not lose so much after shipping?
@TCGBulkKings
@TCGBulkKings 6 месяцев назад
1) I have my own website, tcgbulkkings.com, that I run. And I also have my Pro Seller website through TCGplayer, tcgbulkkings.tcgproseller.com. They aren't synced in any way. 2) There are 3 things I can recommend that I think will help you out. First, list more, list as much as you can, and keep listing product that is above that bulk level. If you can increase the breadth of your inventory, you will get more synergistic sales that will result in fewer of those tiny orders. And when you have higher demand cards, but a big catalog of lower demand cards, a lot of those lower demand ones will get added onto the more valuable orders. Second, drive down the costs of your shipping as much as possible without sacrificing the customer experience. My costs to ship are around $.76 or so right now, so even on a $.05 order, after shipping credits, marketplace fees, and shipping costs, I'm only losing about $.10, which is more than made up for by those bulk+ cards or the orders with multiple cards in them. Finally, I would suggest that, if you are still having a hard time making money on those lower end orders, consider raising your floor a bit. If you price everything that has a "market price" below $.10 back up to $.10, you will still sell some of them, and more as your inventory grows, but you'll have much fewer lossy orders. $.10 is my current floor for games that aren't in the Direct program. Hopefully these tips help you out, and best of luck!
