I agree with everything you said. I came across Dr Jason Fung videos this week, i decided to give IF a go as i gained a lot during covid time. The best thing about IF, on day 2 or 3 sugar craving and snacking totally gone. I just feel calm knowing i m in total control. No calories counting or what diets to follow. When i come out of fasting i eat what i usually cook for family so no stress whatsoever. I started on Sat with mix of 20/4 hr and 48 hr... dropped 2.5kg in 5 days from 79.5kg to 77kg. I m committed to continue for next 3 months to lose further 13kgs to get back to my normal weight.. then just maintain once a week.

Yes Dr. Fung is an awesome resource...I love his books and podcasts! And I agree with you 100%--the feeling of being back in control was what got me hooked on fasting 😀

I lost 40 pounds in 10 weeks counting calories. It was always in line with the equations. The problem when eating whatever you want is the hunger you feel. My biggest tip would be to do it when you're ready. Trying to loose weight and putting in 70% effort is just setting yourself up for failure

Thank you for sharing this! It’s a good reminder that different approaches can work for different people-but your pointing out the commitment aspect is clutch: 70% effort is not going to make things very effective. Again, much appreciate you sharing your experience here 😄

Congratulations on the weight loss and your sobriety!! Both huge accomplishments. In rehab, what is their reason for not allowing internet? And, too, did they have you doing mind-body activities like yoga?

Thank you! The reason for no internet--that's a good question! I think it was to reduce distractions and temptations. The last place I went to was very different than traditional rehabs--it was long-term and faith-based...but now that I think about it, I don't think I ever had internet or my cell phone even in the rehabs I went to before this one. There was one I went to that did yoga once per week, but the last one I went to did not.

Meanwhile over the decades I have maintained the same weight, eating 3 times a day. 4 pounds of meat a day, plenty of FAT! No exercise other than work. Had no idea you were in an unhealthy cycle of addiction and had to be rehabbed.

Yea that’s one of those fast mimicking diets-all that protein and fat keeps you healthy! And yes on the addiction-I was a train wreck until my 30s for the most part 😬

I did intermittent fasting all summer last year and did not lose an ounce, and the doctor told me that because I was fasting so much, I completely stopped by metabolism 😣

Fasting doesn’t typically lower the metabolism, unless you do one meal a day for a long period of time. One meal a day ends up acting like a calorie-restricted diet, which WILL lower your metabolism. What DOES often get in the way of losing fat while fasting is either 1) not fasting long enough and/or 2) the way you eat when you do eat. First, you gotta make sure your insulin lowers enough for your body to let go of fat. Dr. Ben Bikman talks about it being literally impossible to lose body fat when insulin is too high, and it may take a little bit for insulin to lower, depending on how long you’re fasting and how metabolically unhealthy you are. If you’re only fasting for 14 or 16, even 18 or 20 hours, especially if you’re eating high carb, processed food in between, you may not be giving your insulin a long enough time to lower adequately, especially if you really have metabolic issues. I’ve done alternate day fasting, and if I’m eating processed junk on my eating days, I will not lose any fat, and in fact, I’ve gained weight. Hey, Justin - thank you for your response to my email.
