How I made a Desk out of Walnut

In this video I show how I made this walnut desk with a live edge. This was my first time with several woodworking techniques. I used epoxy to fill some holes in the desktop and I used all dowel joinery to assemble the legs. It isn’t perfect but I think it turned out great! I hope you enjoy! I know this is a little intense of a build for some so if you want to build this and have any questions, feel free to comment or send me a message on one of the many social platforms. I would be happy to help.

Mitch, you are a great teacher. I especially like how you try things and if they don't work out you inform us and give us better suggestions. I'm not very handy so I appreciate all the tips!

It’s really great that you shared some of your mistakes. So many woodworker’s won’t do that on there channel. It helps those of us that are not experts by far. Being human is about the best way to explain it. I do like the dowels as someone mentioned below, makes it look really cool. I did want to ask, if you have checked out the pocket hole system? Would love to see some beginner pocket hole videos and jointery techniques. Great job Mitch.

Thanks so much Michael! I appreciate it. I definitely try to show the mistakes because I think it helps people relate. I'm an glad it is helpful! And I do use pocket holes from time to time. I made another desk last year using pocket holes to assemble. I think it is linked in my video description. They are a great jointing method. I have some more projects coming up soon with them. Thanks again for the feedback. 👍

Looks great! I actually really like the look of the oak dowels going all the way through. Makes a nice light/dark contrast.

Enjoyed watching the build, especially the legs. If I can offer a quick tidbit, when it comes to placing epoxy in a small area, I like to use disposable syringes. I pick up a box of a half dozen or so at a farm & home store or vet supply store, and usually have a few different sizes on hand. A lot more precise placement. Keep up the good work, I just found your channel yesterday and have been binge watching.

Thanks Kyle! And the syringe idea is brilliant! Thank you for sharing that. I allm going to try this when I work with epoxy again. Thanks for watching the videos. I really appreciate it!👍

Nice looking desk👍So need to make a new desk myself as my current "desk" is a slab of cheap wood sitting on top of two small filing cabinets 😆

a word of advice, it isn't the weight of the epoxy that caused the bleed through as much as the heat. the epoxy causes an exothermic reaction and most tape cant handle the heat. at first pour a small amount to seal the bottom of the crack. it'll dry faster and more evenly. once that's dry, pour the rest
@MadebyMitch
@MadebyMitch 4 года назад
That makes sense! I will do this next time for sure. It would probably make the whole process go more smoothly because of the layers. Thanks for the advice.👍

Turned out nice, Mitch! I’ve had that same thing with the epoxy and tape happen before. I feel your pain.

Nice desk mitch! Yeah I feel you on epoxy leaking out. Ive had my tape not hold well and come to find most of the epoxy is on the floor.

Hey Mitch, I'm all caught up on your videos. You should try building a downdraft sanding station. I have a piece of pegboard I am gonna make one with that and see how it turns out. Good project for a newer woorworker.

Thanks Ronald! That is a great idea to make the downdraft table. It would help a lot with dust. Thanks for watching my videos! It means a lot. Good luck on your downdraft table!

I love it! You make me want to go out and start building right now! How are the legs holding up? Did the cross bracing really stiffen it up well?
@MadebyMitch

Thanks so much man! The legs are doing great! The bracing helped a lot. I could probably do a couple more things to make it even better, but I am satisfied with how it is now.
