I recently lost my granny this year too. I found the extra fabric she kept from my first cosplay in her craft room and now plan on making tiny fabric hearts to put into the lining of the tops of the rest of my craftsmanship cosplays I make.

Aww what a lovely idea, 💕!! so her heart will always lie beside yours as she supports you in your arts, creativity, expression of life and sharing your fun I’d love to borrow this idea if you don’t mind. I’ve lost Papa to cancer when he was 51 and I was 21. I would love to try this. He was a self-made successful business owner and govt. contractor. He really believes that no one should put limitations on what you’re capable of doing and he’s overcome so much in life and inspired SO many people, mentoring and flying around the world sharing his experiences and guidance at cons like TedTalks. So, I was thinking of inspirational things he said to me over the years, all the wisdom to guide me, they slip away into the wind of time and I don’t want to let go of them, like lost love letters from a father to daughter, blown into the breeze to be carried away. I’d like to make the heart a pocket and write one of his inspirational quotes to tuck inside the heart.

I lost my grandma back in 2014, but she loved sewing as much as I do--she was fabulous at it. I like to think that she would be happy to see me keeping sewing alive in my family. This cosplay is really inspiring me to make something super big and full of ruffles and bows and everything--very beautiful work!

I always wondered why my grandmother and dad were so happy I picked up sewing but after I met my husband I found out. He once attempted to mend a pair of black trousers with cherry red thread. That cord was so knotted and long the little shirt button he chose for the closure was hanging on for dear life 😂. He ended up stapling his pants at work. Your grandmas probably would be proud you can keep your clothes together and express yourself ❤

Gawd, this cosplay is turning out beyond beautful. If I hadn't been watching you make it with my own eyes I'd sooner believe you used witchcraft to force the costume into existence from the artwork. I'm so in love with all of the details you put into the sleeves it really paid off. I know for sure I would never have the patience for beading anything so I really admire all of the work you put into them. When you mentioned you were going to compete at Anime Matsuri I got so excited! I've been competing since I started cosplaying so to me they're one and the same. Do you think you would ever do a video about the ins and outs of competition? Like advice for prejudging, preparing for the competition beforehand and just general tips? That would be super neat.
@SarahSpaceman
@SarahSpaceman Год назад
Thank you so much! I do think I want to do a video like that eventually, Might not be until the start of next year though with everything I still have to finish for Miku, but I'll get to it eventually! Also, Holiday* Matsuri :)

Pintucks are tricky, and you usually end up folding more fabric than you calculated (or I do). I prefer to do the pintucks on the roughly cut piece with extra space and then use the original pattern again (without the pintucks) to cut it to the right measurement ☺️ Your cosplay is looking amazing! Good luck with the competition

Protip I learned for pintucks while doing my own "fancy shirt": Use an (adjustable) blind hem foot! That way, you can't really 'wobble' the line as much and it comes out very clean! The adjustable foot makes it easier if you want to do different sizes of pintucks! Highly recommend it :)) (Rewatching the video for the 4 or 5th time already XD I really love seeing you make stuff and can't wait for more!)
@kirakiracoz1974
@kirakiracoz1974 Год назад
tip for if you forget to add width to your pattern for pintucks- add the pintucks to your fabric before you cut the pieces out and that way you get your pintucks with a wrong pattern :)

@epe-equestrianpatterneduca6184
These are so interesting and well explained. Hearing not only that something didn’t work but WHY is so helpful! I’m curious how you go about the planing process when you first see something you want to cosplay. Maybe a before you start things to consider? Like how much fabric, what patterns to use/make, and also how to pick interfacings.
@SarahSpaceman
@SarahSpaceman Год назад
Thank you! I may do a planning video in the future but the short answer is basically all of my cosplays start with an adobe illustrator document where i make the pattern, compare it to to-scale rectangles at the size the fabric comes in so i can know how much i need, and lots of notes and math, and sketches and stuff like that haha
@epe-equestrianpatterneduca6184
@@SarahSpaceman it’s amazing that you are able to visualize how to take a typically, 2D image and adapt it to being a real and wearable design. It might not be the most exciting video but it would be very educational for those starting. You make wonderful content!
@grandmasgopnik9642
@grandmasgopnik9642 Год назад
I would love that actually because I mostly work with miniatures and I have been trying to convert patterns into digital but I’m new to digital medium and I use it more for illustration usually. So for now I’ve been stuck drafting pattern blocks and measurements manually which is prone to inaccuracies with repeated transfers.

I lost my granny in 2018. In my craft room - where I discovered you, watched this video, and worked on everything from my first historical projects to clothes for my niece she didn’t get to meet- is the sewing machine and unfinished projects she left. When she was sick she taught me knitting, now I’m teaching it, gifting items, and carrying on supplying the family with their favorite slipper. I’ve found it so hard to talk about losing her. I can completely relate to your loss and feelings of connection ❤ I’m watching this in 2024, it’s not the first video of yours I’ve watched. But I’m glad I found it today.

I love this so much! YT kept recommending me one of your videos, making a different piece of this costume (I didn't know at the time). Honestly it wasnt an item I was interested in so I didnt click. They recomend it because I watch quite a bit of sewing videos. Then instagram showed me your page a few times. Finally checked it out, saw that you made this yourself. Alas here I am! I began sewing two years ago and would absolutely love learning how to make cosplay. It's nice to see someone explqining their process 😊 Congrats on winning!! Oh yeah, about the grandma thing. Mine passed away from Alzheimers a few years ago, before I learned to sew. I never saw her do any sewing in my lifetime, BUT, she was already 70 by the time I was born. I know if she were here today she would be doting on me and the things I make so much. Nobody else in my family has ever done that for me. Love grandmothers ❤

the bit about your grandma hit really hard, three months ago yesterday i lost my dad suddenly, and my world is still settling. before he died, he had ordered and wrapped some christmas presents for us. he gave me a fashion sketchbook and fabric shears. before he died, i didn't really know what i wanted to do with my life, but i have now been looking into going into fashion design as a career. before, i was trying to figure out how to find a stable job while also doing what i love, and i've realized lifes just too short to not spend it living it to the fullest. i know that some things will always feel bittersweet, and i will likely never be able to enjoy the holiday season in the same way. so yeah, love your people, tell them you love them, and stay healthy

I’m sorry to hear you lost your grandmother. I know my Dad and my grandmother taught me how to sew and make various crafts and I treasure the time we spent together. When I got married she was embarrassed because my family came from lesser means than my husband and all the presents she gave us were ones she had made. I knew what she had made took a lot of effort, time and skill on her part and we’re curated to what I enjoyed even if others at the party didn’t quite like the style. In the end I knew that half of the things people had brought us from the store would come and go but the things my grandmother made would always be there. They are beautiful, unique and made by someone I love dearly so they sit in my home years later. I can’t imagine losing her stories and laughter one day so I am dearly sorry. I am glad you are able to keep her memories with you. ❤

I have never touched a sewing machine and I am Spanish. I keep watching your videos because of the overexplaining, otherwise I would be VERY LOST -I still am lost and fascinated about your cosplays 🤩🤩 I really love your work!!

I’m watching this while trying to make a mock-up for my third anniversary Rui cosplay from Pjsk and I must say you are one of the BEST cosplayers I’ve ever seen keep up the good work Sarah!☆ :)

While I don't do cosplay, I do appreciate these videos for general listening. I had it playing while working on some micro crochey for a doll I'm making, and pucked up some tips for the burlesque costumes I make. :)

The power mesh for the puffy sleeves part is genius. I’m working on Dandelion Breeze Jean (have not started the puffies yet) and my idea was silicon-backed elastics. If that doesn’t work though, I’ll run to Joanns and see if they got any of that power mesh in stock
