How I Met Your Father, the gender-swapped update of How I Met Your Mother, is meticulously faithful to the original’s format and its starry-eyed search for love - so why are critics slamming it as missing key ingredients that made the first series great?

I think character development is lost on people today. Any character needs to be entirely likeable or their flaws will be seen as bad writing.It's lame. We used to have arcs with characters that were evil to their core, bad, but still main characters and people grew to see their side and they changed. We dont need every problematic character to see the light entirely in episode 1. If barney was a good boy episode 1 we wouldnt get the part explaining why he's like he is, why he has trouble with love, etc things many people deal with. (trouble with love not being misogynist XD)
@samf.s.7731
@samf.s.7731 2 года назад
Nah, sorry! It's all NPH, the only reason I can stand Barney is NPH. If you're suggesting HIMYF is missing NPH, then I would say that's possible. For me, he's made up for by Duff, who in no way plays a Barney, nor is she trying to make up for his absence. The cast is talented, there's more diversity, and they're still getting started so I don't see the point of comparing a show that finished its run with one that's just getting started, and it looks as though it's trying to correct mistakes of the previous show. And guess what? A lot of gentlemen can relate to Ted and Marshal, they're guys that are LOVED (And let's face it, Ted got around a lot too! -Despite his best efforts because he truly was looking for love- Not as much as Barney, but he did, so it's not like a guy has to be an A-hole to get girls to like him) . Also, the hate-watch culture of today is unbearable. If you're not interested, don't watch it bro! It's okay to like the original and stick to it. Find a show that you're into! Watch Sebastian Stan talk to his schwang in Pam and Tommy, or John freaking Cena dance in his underwear after having sex with the girl who has the most "out there" hair in 2022 (And laugh! That's the point, to entertain and not bore you 😁). HIMYF is very comforting overall, but if it didn't do it for you, that's okay (Hugs). Also great job showing KC instead of her kids, we genuinely can't tell who the dad is, for all we know it could be Ian.

To be honest,it was Only Neil that made me stomach Barney after a while. I love a good laugh but it became really gross and I couldn't look at his growth w/out seeing the issues the character was covered in. It became kind of relieving that he and Robin divorced . It made it really hard for them to stay together,for me.The amount of resistance to growing made a relationship for them too unrealistic,even for a sitcom.

The original framing device worked better because we couldn't see Bob Saget, and his narration was more entertaining. Seeing Kim Cattrall on screen kind of takes away from the same impact, though it's likely done to conceal the son's ethnicity, since the possible father could be a man of colour. Plus, it saves them from having to rely on old footage to stop him from aging out of the role.

I am actually very optimistic about How I Met Your Father! Especially as a lot of the critisism simply states that the show lacks in comparison to the original. Which is extremely natural, as we are only 6 episodes into the first season of the show. Some of the running gags and catchphrases that made HIMYM iconic weren't even introduced until much later. I also think that sophie is way more toned down compared to ted, ted fell hard for everyone and goes into serious relationships left and right but sophie takes her time and is revealed to have never had an actual relationship. She’s anxious about love and while ted’s arc is about taking things slow while sophie’s is probably going to be about letting herself take risks. I keep hoping they let Ellen grow into a little bit of Barney's smooth operator traits. It seems like she doesn't stand on her own two feet yet -- which isn't altogether bad since she literally just moved to NYC, but it shouldn't continue forever. I'd love to see her arc leading to her casually and easily picking up multiple women in the background of the main story as a running gag. In general I really hope the writers find their footing. I want so badly to love it. There's just so many jokes that I feel like don't land quite as well as they could have, even if the overarching plot point is solid. The setup of accidentally inviting a classy guy to a trashy party? Fantastic! The actual delivery? Pretty lackluster. Or maybe I'm just too cynical for this story? Who knows.

I disagree that Barney wouldn't be "politically correct" enough for today's audiences. From the get go Barney was a character, even if we immersed in the story, he still seemed like he was not a realistic portrayal. From the suits he wore like a costume, to the catchphrases that masked his true thoughts, Barney was always just obviously a character and one who held a huge agency in his self-creation. That's made his misogyny digestible enough. Although some of the things he says and does are super-offensive and border on abusive/predatory, the story itself treats Barney with enough ridicule that an intelligent audience doesn't think for a moment that the show truly condones his lifestyle and portrays it as more inspirational than what, for instance, Marshall and Lily had.

Don't forget that while Barney was the obvious, overt narcissist, ted was the covert narcissist who was. in many ways, more problematic than Barney. If Hillary Duff's character isn't like that, good (I haven't watched yet) and if the main male characters on the show are actively avoiding those characteristics, then you're only going to have the 1-dimensional sleaze bags everyone can see from a mile away and there won't be any room for them to grow. At least with Barney, we got to understand why he became the way he did, and we got to see him learn from it. The showrunners didn't see the problem with ted, and thus we never got to see him grow as a person, the most we got from his parents were emotionally distant, hide your real feelings bullshit, so ted (it seems) just ran with, a disney ending mentality that everything will work out, instead of learning it takes work to build a relationship with someone, and you can't make two people work no matter how much they like each other if they have to change who they are to be together.

I think what you are saying describes modern TV characters- especially male characters. They lack substance, growth, personalities everything that made them compelling. At times I think US TV shows are following twitter instead of producing good, realistic characters. Everyone's 1 dimensional, morally right, honestly there hasn't been 1 widely popular character like Barney in years. I think they should go back to making "problematic" characters again they were the most interesting

To be honest its kind of forgetable and feels like a money grab...none of its characters stand out on their own like Ted, Marshal, Lily, Robin and Barney did...Even How I met your Mother became a parody of itself by the final season....Having the same premise twice? I was trying to put my finger on what this show was missing, and this video really helped me. It's how the story is told. Sure, there are other issues I have with the show, but that's what I kept feeling was missing. It doesn't feel like HIMYM, but a regular sitcom that wouldn't be affected if the narrator was removed entirely. Hopefully if it gets a season 2 this will be fixed or at least more leaned into. Part of the issue is Sophie isn't really able to talk about her friends the way Ted was, by leaving the possibility the dad could be any of the guys (which I found hilarious at first) she can't really go into their storylines with the son making the narration even less impactful on the other characters' storylines.
@Killgore-ip2yq
@Killgore-ip2yq 2 года назад
It's honestly too safe as a sitcom. It's not that I don't like the characters and even think they made significant improvements with the narrator being more present in the show, but I feel that Himym could be rewatchable even by today is because the situations are more relatable than HIMYF because the new show is unrealistic in making us relate to these people outside the superficial.
@sarahlelys9268
@sarahlelys9268 2 года назад
True. I have been wondering about that and I came to the conclusion that Older Ted could say absolutely everything he wanted because he could talk freely about "Aunt Lily" and "Aunt Robin" and "Uncle Marshall" and "Uncle Barney." But Older Sophie doesn't have that freedom. The best she could do is call them all by their names (like "See, darling, when I first met him Jesse/Sid/Charlie/Iain was [insert whatever] because when he was a little kid he [insert joke]") but she'd more naturally call the dad "your dad." She could do it with "Aunt Valentina" and "Aunt Ellen" I guess, but so far I have the impression that they're not willing to. Another issue I see is that Older Ted's narration was hilarious because they really leaned into his being an unreliable narrator and his making comments about the characters and events and his telling his kids little stories from the other characters' cast, but Older Sophie just doesn't do that at all. Final issue I see with Older Sophie: she's just not funny at all. Her one-liners are very silly and they also depict her as someone who is both very snobbish/pretentious/condescending and extremely different from the Sophie we see in the series. I personally find her very unlikable. With Older Ted you could feel Ted's personality, with a few changes that go with aging -- wiser, calmer, his sense of humour drier, but he was the same character we knew.
@CalistFitness
@CalistFitness 2 года назад
I think the reason why Sophie doesn't speak about her friends the way Ted was, is because she met most of them the day the story starts, she didn't know much about them at that time, they don't have history together before the story started so bassically everything that Ted has talked about in a flashback for example will just happen on screen

@@Ray03595 Yeah because HIMYM was a cartoonish show, which is another thing this show lacks. I think the whimsical aspects are one of the main things that made HIMYM stand out and it's surprising that a sister show would throw away the core structure of the original, instead of changing something else from the millions of other elements of the original. And I think what the original comment was referring to, is that despite outlandish situations and scenarios HIMYM still had dialogues and performances that felt very natural and most conversations felt like real conversations between real people. How I met your father has the main cast become besties after one 30ish minute cab ride and then a 10 minute long mission for the lead to get her phone back from the cab driver. What the f? Literally the most ridiculous scenario I've ever seen in the pilot of an episode, and maybe if the dialogue wasn't so forced and stiff and unnatural, it could be forgiven but-. I've never met someone who talks like any of the characters in How I met your father, they don't talk like real people, it's like they're giving a scripted and rehearsed TED talk every 5 minutes, and again, maybe if they were funny it could be overlooked; the way HIMYM had some episodes with not so great dialogues but God at least the jokes were witty, clever and funny. I really hope they find better writers because I was really excited for the reboot but my God this show is just bad, so far there aren't any redeeming qualities besides a decent production design and mediocre actors who could potentially shine quite bright under a good director. I know they're not trying to replicate the original show but instead take some inspiration from it, but by changing the core and main things that make the original what it is AND also writing awfully boring and predictable bits and jokes, I just don't see a bright future for this show although I hope they prove me wrong and try to improve it.

I know these shows both like to think they are challenging traditional gender roles and gendered relationship norms, but honestly they are doing far more to reinforce them. The farthest deviation we get are these tired "woman who likes to act like a man" or "man who likes who acts like a woman" trope. But these tropes themselves further reinforce the gender binary and rigid gender roles, and the idea that relationships can only function within these immutable predefined parameters.

I always hear “Barney was so problematic”. Okay, sure, if that’s your view of him, okay. But the other characters constantly told him everyday how problematic he was. They were constantly telling him how gross, wrong, and sexist he was. So, while Barney for me is the best, the show definitely pointed out that the things he did and said were sexist and wrong. For me personally, I understand I’m watching a fictional tv show and I don’t get my thong even more in a wad over it. Characters exist for a reason and you can love them, or hate them, but why should every and all characters be the same? Why should they all be woke or moral? That’s boring! I also loved Prince Joffrey because he was excellently portrayed a the most annoying little brat! How i met your mother was often very real ( i don't mean Barney's insane adventures) like they tackled serious issues like abandonment, debt, death, infertility... it wasn't just a sitcom that only was there for laughs. Barney shouting at his father : if you were gonna be some lame suburban dad why couldn't you have been that for me!?" Will always hit me in the feels. Or Marshal's devastated reaction when he found out his dad died ( i crie every single time ). Also the diversity in himyf seems forced at least at the beginning. Himym had James, Ranjit, lily's friend Michelle and it didn't seem forced , it was organic. Ranjit is still my favorite side character. He was like the 6th member of the group . And shows that play it to safe at least for me are boring . Himym took risks with a character like Barney but Two and a half men also had that character in Charlie and he was everyone's favorite. I don't like How I Met Your Father but I feel your criticisms are somewhat unrealistic. Barney didn't confront his father in season one, nor did Marshall's dad die in the first six episodes. You need to earn the sad plotlines, if HIMYF threw in a heavy plotline like that in the first season, it'd be a major turn off because you're not nearly attached enough to these characters to care. If Barney had confronted his dad (an event that also makes me quite teary) in season 1 or even season 2 I wouldn't have cared because it hadn't been earned yet. How I Met Your Father is very unenjoyable for me but I feel comparing a show with one season too heavily to a show with nine is a bit harsh. Also lily's friend Michelle is absolutely not a good example because she shows up once as a device for a joke lol. This show has so many faults but the casting isn't one of them.

When I saw the a three-camera sitcom was coming to Hulu I was extremely off-put by it too, maybe it's not fair, but it feels like something you shouldn't have to pay premium prices for and should be getting free on an actual Network. streaming has the benefit of asking for premium prices for premium content. I'm not sure why this couldn't have actually aired on television, and had to go directly to Hulu. HBO is not known for having three camera sitcoms and I think there's a reason for that If I was the one paying for the Hulu I use, I'd be like "my money is getting funneled into the same crap I get for free, where's genre-bending risky stuff?" If this kind of show had to be made for a streaming service I think it would be more at home on Tubi. Tubi is 100% free and supported by ads, so they don't have any type of obligation to make a certain type of content, because they're not taking people's money with the promise of giving them something cool, they're getting money from advertisers

I hear what you’re saying, but I think the entire point of this video was to highlight the fact that it’s NOT a genre-bending risky show in a world where literally all of the main streaming services offer genre-bending risky stuff on the regular. Three-camera sitcoms they do not. This video is saying that’s sort of what makes the show special

There’s no magical realism. It was cool seeing weird stuff happen or time periods blend together as a reminder that this was all from Ted’s memory and it wasn’t reliable.

I know you're not supposed to, but I do like shows that have a laugh track. 90s sitcoms are my fav.
