Wow I never thought about that. Robin, Ted, and Lilly were always going on about how they hated their jobs but they still got to work in their field, Marshall had to work in his field with a company he wanted to fight against in court. Doing the literal opposite of his dream. His dad died, Lilly dumped him, he gave up his judge dream for Lilly's dream.

I think she would have just stayed awhile longer since the success would distract her from everything for awhile, but eventually she would have felt lonely. Even if she had a new group of friends or even if she had a new boyfriend. Eventually she would have realized it wasn't the same. It might have been too late to fix things by then, so luckily it didn't happen that way.
But if lily didn't work hard as teacher, marshal cant afford law school, live in newyork. Lily made marshal reach his dream. She wanted reciprocation. I know she seems selfish. But somehow she isn't...
These scenes are so heartbreaking thinking of how Marshall feels. “You’re scaring the hell out of me” when they broke up she truly broke his heart. Imagine your everything leaving you. No wedding. Can you imagine how scared Marshall was?? Having to look into an unknown future just because Lily wanted to chase her dreams. If she had promised him she would come back to him he wouldn’t have to worry about what the future held, but not promising him anything really cut ties of any hope for him. Also random, but she really had some nerve to ask him to get back together.
She couldn't promise it, however. Noone knew how San Francisco would turn out for her. I get and support that she didn't promise it, and while I get why she acted how she acted and think it was fitting for her character, I think it's terrible that she went behind Marshall's back and then left him standing in the rain with the wedding fallout and everything. And all that just goes to show that HIMYMs characters are human, complex and fallible. This is one of the most well-written arcs in TV.
@@mandolo100 i 100% agree, that's a hard promise to make. but it's also not fair to expect marshall to just hang around waiting for a lily that might never come back. if she wasn't going to make the promise she should have ended it. it shouldn't have dragged into her saying "i need to find out who i am outside of us, so we can't talk for awhile". which is still a non break up and expecting him to just wait around on hope alone.
People will find any reason to hate Lily, even make shit up. Yet they hypocritically hate her for manipulating. Difference is this is a show and these people are real.
She was just dying to get back together , and she couldn't even help saying anything but that. She was really selfish in this moment , she was just trying to fix her own emotions and didn't give a shit about marshall's . I know it because I made the exact same mistake , and it caused me a very beautiful , loving girl. Lily's personality analysis in the beginning tho was very solid . Lily just acted like Lily
She did say she was sorry, but her request to get back together was for her emotional stability than Marshall's. Despite the regret, she was being selfish at that moment.
This is why I'm glad that later on in the last season when they have their fight and she says: "You were more selfish than I have EVER been to you!" Marshall wastes NO time in addressing this. It was Karma coming back to bite her.
Completely agree... right up until he added on “What if you had found success in San Francisco? How do I know you would have come back?” That question would have been appropriate BEFORE they got married, but after you say “I do,” those kind of doubts have no place in a marriage. And asking if he and their children were just “consolation prizes,” I’m sorry but that was cold.

@@katie5920 Hmmm, except as seen at 2:00-2:30, he WAS willing to support it (grudgingly) IF she could at least promise him that 3 months wouldn’t become forever. All she could say was “Pause! Pause!” She might as well have been saying “I can’t promise you that!” Her decision to go to San Francisco was purely for herself, never mind that they were supposed to get married and start a life together. That was completely selfish. Again, though, that should’ve been an issue brought to rest BEFORE they got married. Once you tie the knot, all past doubts and mistrusts need to be wiped clean. To not do so is a recipe for disaster.

And I get they were supposed to get married which is where all of this came from, her settling down made her realize there is so much she's wanted but felt like she couldn't do and she wanted to see if she could make it before she had kids and felt like she lost her chance. It would have been worse for her to go through with the wedding and have regrets or tell him after, it was just something she needed to do for herself but I don't think that makes her selfish, sometimes we all need to do what we have to for ourselves.

Granted, once marriage and children enter the picture it definitely becomes more difficult, but not impossible. Plus, what was Marshall supposed to do, put his life on indefinite pause while she ditches him to go do something for herself? They made major plans together and she was abandoning him at the eleventh hour. He had a right to know whether or not she was coming back so he could move on with his own life.
People have cheapen it and screwed their partner over. Actions speaks louder then words and through those actions trust is made. Really how many times have we seen each of these chars. choose career over people who truly love them. At the end it would have been better if they went with love

He could have moved to San Francisco after a few years or they could have tried long distance and she could come back. At the end of the day, what she said about "needing to see who I am outside of us" makes sense but it was still grounds for breaking up.
Yeah but that turned into an ultimatum: if you leave, we'll break up. Sure Lily could've handled it better but they got together very early and sometimes you just need to figure out who you are and what you want.

My theory, everyone says that if she was successful she wouldn’t have gone back to him but I think it was self sabotage. She was upset without Marshall and didn’t even attempt to move on or be happy because she doesn’t know who she is without him. Periodt.
I have a different view on that. I am not saying your theory is wrong, I just have a similar theory that I would like to share. On my opinion, she felt so bad about what she did to Marshall, and was so unhappy about it, that she couldn't focus on her work, and due to that she had a horrible time in San Francisco
I feel like if she had had his support on San Francisco she could've shifted her career into her main focus for the summer and then found a better balance between it and her relationship without feeling like it was always one or the other.
@@sisib1389 yep, I suspect her art has suffered because of breaking up with Marshall, but this way she slowly becomes an acolyte of Marshall and she didn't have to be, this was a choice to mould her into a 'Mother' by the writers. The show evaded having Lily be successful as both an artist and a wife by making her career moves flakeouts. Marshall uses this against her later to focus on his career and actually calls her art a hobby at one point.
Excluding the fact she never would’ve come back to Marshall if she’s become successful, there is a far bigger sin with this: Marshall taking her back so quickly. When he said no to her initial plea I was like YES!!! They needed to spend time apart to build their characters individually. Should they get back together and get married? Yes but it should’ve been down the line somewhere. NOT at the end of s2.

Lily was totally in the wrong. There was nothing that she wanted to do with the art program that required her to be single. Marshall was always completely sportive of her being an artist. She just didn't want to get married and was using the art program as an excuse.
Nope. She had every right to do something that she wanted. Marshall is the one who gave her the ultimatum; she never stated that she wanted to go as a single woman. She could have handled it better, I'll grant that but totally in the wrong? Not at all.

Agreed. Its actually the one thing about lilys actions that I don't support. I understand why she left Marshall - I mean, it was their biggest fight ever for a reason. But she ALSO left Ted, who has been one of her closest friends for about 10 years at this point. In that regard, she definitely was kind of a "grinch".

AJ your comment is well intentioned, but deep down, it was not only about the career; she wanted to try if that other life would work (without Marshall in it)... So, what most people here are complaining about is that she kinda treated Marshall as sloppy seconds in case that other life didn't work out. Honestly, Marshall should at least have try it with more women before getting back to Lilly.
Marshall was the best husband ever and he could have done way better than Lily. They were good together and he loved her but I think he deserved a little better.

Tbh I kind of wish they had stayed broken up for a while longer. Lily and Marshall were too much of a unit and given the rest of the series, I would have liked a huge amazing getting back together moment
One of the things that I love so much about Marshall and Lily is that they can comminicate with eachother so well without speaking. Like when Marshall says maybe we shouldn't get married at all and Lily says maybe not, they both stop arguing because they love eachother and they want the same thing so they know they might both make a bad decision if they keep on fighting. I think that this break up is the imperfection that makes them so perfect for eachother.

God I find it hard understanding the logic people use (I know this is a TV show but it happens in reality too), one of the MANY reasons I disliked lily (I do think Alyson Hannigan is a good actor though).
They were straight out of college and planning to get a married. I think it’s completely natural for Lily to put her career first for a few months. It doesn’t mean she loves him any less, it’s not like she broke up him exactly, she would have preferred that he supported her. I understand why Marshall would be concerned but I think it’s important that she got a chance to follow her dreams, as well as Marshall did with becoming a lawyer. She would have been a gutless character without San Francisco.
The Joker could she have moved to san franscico after marriage? Marriage does lock you down a certain amount. I sympathise with Marshal’s anger but when you’re young you kind of have to be selfish for a while. This was her last opportunity to be free and independent. I think most women/people face the choice between a career and settling down. I don’t think we should shame her for wanting both, despite her methods (not being honest, etc). Would you have really liked her character more if she was merely Marshal’s side piece?
The Joker Lily studied art at college and only took a pause from it to pay for Marshal’s law school. She essentially sacrificed her dream temporarily to support him. Her timing was definitely unfortunate but it makes sense, marriage is a big commitment, you can’t really leave for 3 months when you’re married. I agree that Lily has done many bad things throughout the show, but in my opinion that’s what makes the show appealing: The characters all have flaws but they mean well and it gives the show depth and realism. Barney, by far, is the most flawed character, yet we know he has good qualities that outweigh that side of him. Lily meant well when she did those things. It’s not right but everyone makes mistakes

Lily was being selfish. And sure, being selfish isn’t always a bad thing. And sure, no one can blame Lily for having ambitions and wanting to accomplish new things. But they can blame her for leaving them. For ditching her boyfriend just months before their wedding. For refusing to comfort him or any of her friends about her impending trip. And for refusing to show any remorse for basically side-lining everyone in her old life and declaring that she needed to “find out who I am” without them. Heck, she didn’t seem to check on them or how they were doing by messages or letters or anything while she was gone. Everyone seems to defend selfishness these days. But why does that only apply to Lily here? Why can’t Marshall or Ted or Robin or Barney be selfish and want Lily to stay? Why can’t they want for Lily to care more about her life with them than some vague dream that she picked up just because of her cold feet? Ditching people to go start a new life does NOT entitle you to their love and support. If Lily’s dream had worked out, she likely would’ve cut them off and found new friends. It is NOT evil to want someone to choose you over an ambition. It’s love. It’s a desire to feel like the other person cares.
Marshall deserved better! Everyone has the right to pursue their dreams and Lily had every right to go to CA to pursue art, but how could she not promise Marshall that he'd fall out of her life?

I think one thing to remember is that these are supposed to be human beings. And, humans have flaws. Ted broke up with a girl twice on her birthday and cheated on Victoria. Robin told Ted that she wasn't interested and then invited Ted over knowing he was not only in a relationship, but also crazy about her. Lily broke off her engagement and destroyed Marshall's date. Tbh, i'm just starting off the series again, but it's important to know that these people are humans. With bad and good traits. If you consider Lily absolutely horrible, how about all those hearts Barney broke? How about the amount of times he manipulated and lied to women? I like all of these characters because they are human, just like us. If you were to judge yourself based on the horrible actions you made, not considering your own feelings or contexts, you might also see youself as horrible. It's just not fair to see one action define a person (unless it's outwardly horrible like killing or something). Anyway, sorry about that rant. I found Lily absolutely heartless for this, but i also found that she improved. And also, sometimes people just need a break from everything. Some people don't, but some people do. Edit: and I would like to say that you are all entitled to your opinions. After all, this show is just a show. But, I just hope people try to get full context in real life before deciding someone is outwardly selfish or horrible.

Robin... well the same. She was really cool at the start, but then this affair with Barney... it was just messed up

@@925263 up until S5. After that, her character started playing with Ted and Barney's feelings. She was getting married to Barney and she told Ted she wanted to run away with him. She left Barney alone (during the longest second that would never end). Her feelings kept dwindling which did not help her case in someone's list of favourite characters.
Lily is terrible when she thought she had a chance at success she was willing to breakup with Marshall to risk it and she kinda deserved to have it backfire. Also, she bought all those things and put herself in so much debt only for Marshall and her to slowly have to work it back. It's crazy what she was like.
sheillastyles then again lily tried to leave Marshall on multiple accounts and succeeded the first time. And even though she supported him through law school, the moment he had a chance at his dream job, she deemed her own dream job more important despite doubtlessly trying to reach for it and mostly failing until last second.
She supported his dream and going to law school and she needed to follow her own dreams, it wasn't that she thought she had success and was willing to leave him over it. She tried to get him on her side but he was the one fighting it and making her choose instead of letting her chase this dream.
@Marie ᶘ oᴥoᶅ okay flash back to season one finale. Lily and Marshall were engaged. They were planning to get married but lily wanted to take her art fellowship(?) in San Francisco. The wedding was planned and they were in planning stages and talking about it for months. Now here comes lily suddenly saying “yea I can’t marry you I need to go to San Francisco to see how this art thing goes” (which honestly I wouldn’t have minded if she had promised Marshall that they’ll still be together). Once again, lily puts her dream over everything else including her own relationship. It just rubs me the wrong way how she deems it okay to run out last minute on plans with Marshall and expects him to be okay with it but the second Marshall wants to do the same thing she acts like he’s the meanest person to her and that she has never done anything like that (cue the scene where they’re arguing and she says she’s never been that selfish, but Marshall literally has to remind her about her escape to San Francisco.) Although the act may not seem selfish, I believe it is. Maybe I was wrong in saying that she deems her dream job more important and I will own up to that and say sorry. My mind got the best of me :< But I still think she was selfish in that moment too of trying to dictate what she and Marshall can or cannot do it in order to benefit herself. (There’s also a lot more instances of lily being selfish like how she interacts with the gang but I’m tired of typing so)
About the one time Lily gets her selfishness thrown back in her face and has to fess up. She had every right to break things off properly, heart-breaking as it was, and go find out who she really was, at the risk of never getting back together with Marshall, if that was truly what she wanted. But to try and leave Marshall hanging like that: 'If we don't talk for a while', so she was going to just leave him high and dry and chance her arm and if it didn't work, have him on the hook despite calling off their wedding just round the corner. And she was a repeat offender, having done this once before to Scooter 10 years before and now doing it to her fiancé and partner of 9 years. Bless Marshall for telling her no and giving himself some space. But still Lily then had to make it about herself and act like Marshall was in the wrong for giving himself time alone, let alone when Lily then impulsively sabotaged his attempt at a date with Chloe. Lily was forever the reacher, no matter how much she tried and failed to convince us she was the settler.
I like to think that when Marshall said no to getting back together with Lily it was him ending the trauma of their previous relationship so they could start a new one fresh
I think he still was too hurt to be able to get back with her together. He needed more time to heal and think about his own life decisions. I think, he made the right decision there and it ultimately made their relationship even stronger.

Everyone is saying marshall shouldn't have given an ultimatum but I disagree. He asked her if she could guarantee that they wouldn't break up at the end of the 3 months but she couldn't do that. She was willing to permanently give up marshall for her dreams and wanted him to put his life on hold for her to figure out if she has a shot at making it. It's only fair that marshall decides that if she leaves him then he won't put his life on hold and wait for her in the chance that she decides that he does fit in with her dream life. Therefore the options were stay and get married or leave and let marshall get on with his life as well. It's unfair to expect marshall to sit there and wait while she's gone when she's not even sure if marshall has a future with her.
I am sorry to tell you this but lily and marshall dated for over 12 years this kind of trust can't be buily with someone so easily Don't have big hopes for your relationships and say that you are carefree for life, enjoy them while it can last, everything had an ending I am sorry if i was harsh but i can't say it in any other way than this
I dont think she *did* anything wrong. He asked for the truth she was honest. But just expecting to get back together like that was kind of unreasonable.
She supported his dream and he couldn't do the same for her, instead he made her feel guilty for wanting to chase her dreams so if anything lily deserved someone else.

While it DOES make him look a bit like a "grinch", I can very well understand his feelings. My takeaway is, that they simply weren't ready to get married, tried to rush it anyways and had it backfire badly.
Why the hell doesn't anyone understand that this was not about painting AT ALL. She was having an identity crisis. People say marshall is the sweetest marshall is this marshall is that not realizing marshall is the only one in the group with a LOVING FAMILY and healthiest childhood. I do not think Marshall and lily should have gotten back together. I think the whole season should have been them exploring who they are outside of the relationship and over the course of the season decide that they do want to be with each other and find there way back to each other.
People want to complain about the ending, but this was the most unrealistic writing of the entire show. Yes, couples often have extended amounts of break up before they even decide to get engaged. But this version of Lily is incredibly fickle; so she initially got engaged because she thought her life was over and there was nothing better to do but to get married? that's the last person to ever trust again if they just see you as a consolation prize

She didn’t get engaged because “she thought she had nothing else better to do in life” she did it because she was in love with Marshall. The reason they broke up was because she was unhappy with how her career was going and she felt lost and unsure of who she was at that point in her life since she had always been with Marshall (which is very realistic as most people go through this in long term relationships) so she wanted to find herself and the only way she could have done that was to be apart from him and try out her art career in San Francisco. She never saw him as a consolation prize but more as someone she realized she couldn’t be happy without after she left him, which is why she wanted to get back together with him.

You forget that the entire show is told from an unreliable source Ted. Everything is dramatized for entertainment. Some times were longer and others were shorter. He’s telling stories from 20-40 years ago. Stories thy he doesn’t know the entire story to. Stories that were only told from his point of view and his friend Marshall’s point of view. Realistically speaking hardly any of these stories about Teds life are 100% accurate. They’re like 50% accurate at most.

i have a few things to say. 3 months is not a long time, but if lily wants to break up (which i sounds like) why didn’t she just say so, instead of walk around it and how dare she just say “can we get back together” like she didn’t up and leave
Marshall agrees at the end to support her only if she promises not to erase him out of the picture. This is hard cause we all make mistakes & are frightened of things.
It's called being a real friend. All of their lives would be a mess (specially Robin's and Ted's) if they didn't have Lily around. We all need a friend like her.
Lily supported marshal's dream and told him that he could do it but he couldn't just do the same for her? She didn't want to break up but he was making her choose so she left.
Marshall was a total angel in the entirety of the show. When you think about it, it's better that he and Lily ended up, else he would have let his niceness ruin his life.
I just ended a relationship. She brought it up first but wanted to hang as friends to get to know each other better. But it was painful and I had to end it completely. I dream about getting back together. Maybe we will, but I know also no matter how painful it is and how easy it would be to patch things up I shouldn't, at least for now. Need time and space to feel the me again and will not think about asking her out again until I'm completely comfortable around her.
Maybe I’m weird, but I wouldn’t ever get married to someone who I wouldn’t prioritize over anything else in my life and who wouldn’t do the same for me . Lily did not do this when Marshall did. I’m glad he threw this back in her face later in the series but I wouldn’t have taken her back were I in Marshall’s position.
I understand Marshall was scared but he reacted horribly and was too extreme. This is what happens with long relationships that started too young giving up on dreams for the other person at such young age, and still in S8 Lily kept thinking about how she gave up he dream (twice) for her family and no one seems to care about that fact. So 2 part advice. 1. Either you unconditionally support your partner's life goals they same way they support yours. 2. Or don't be in a long term relationship at 19. I'm sorry but I understand Lily and I think she made the right choice, I understand Marshall as well but he could have been more understanding, they both had different dreams and if he wasn't about to give up on his to be with her in SF then might as well let her go do her thing without telling her that either she stays or she can forget about him.
Youre forgetting the fact that they were about to get married. It wouldve been easier for Marshall to accept it if that wasnt the case I think. Not to mention that Lily deliberately accepted the program behind Marshalls back knowing it conflicted with their wedding date (which was already planned).
excepto she didn't sacrifice her dream. She left Marshall here and failed, and at least 2 other times she tries to be an artist again to Marshall's detriment and fails again. Marshall supports her dream but making a decision behind his back that cancels the wedding is WAY way out of line and she gets away with it. Lily isn't justified, she should have told him she was taking the exam originally so that they could move the date but she kept stalling and by the end the simple question of: if you go will we still be together? She can't even answer...come on, there's no way that's ok.
@@7jc1rr9 the thing is that it's much more complicated than just moving the date. Like you said she did it knowing that it would mess up the wedding. I've never been married and I'm someone who already has accomplished her own professional goals but I don't know what I would have done if I was engaged to be married before I had accomplished everything i wanted in life because my career has always been such an important part of my life. And the thing is that Marshall already was on that path and Lily wasn't. And I'm sorry but starting a marriage with someone when you haven't even figured out who you are or what you want in life must be scary, and that's what Marshall didn't understand. Her ways weren't right but I completely understand it because I was scared of that when I was in university.
Sorry I'm late to the party, just found this. Agree; while I certainly think Lily could have handled things better, Marshall had no right to give her an ultimatum. People have the right to find themselves before they settle down.
This show taught people that men are capable of relaxing and having fun. While women who can still have fun are the ones who put and end to fun and ultimately control the relationships.
I can understand why Marshall had a problem. He wanted to support her pursuit of her career, her timing was awful. They were about to get married, but she was leaving the city. He wasn't willing to do long-distance, and especially not right before their wedding. He would have been willing to support it, if it just wasn't across the country and right before their wedding. And he shouldn't have gotten back together with her so quickly, at least not for a season. They're soulmates for sure, but Marshall needed more time to recover.
One of the reasons why I was fascinated by Season 2 was that they realistically NOT have Marshall immediately take Lily back. Her actions weren't easily forgiven. I'm glad they spent time trying to heal individually before they tried to heal as a couple.
I think the only reason she went to SF was bc the wedding was being anticipated and she felt anxious. I mean, every one once in their life have said “now im thinking about myself” and then find the love of their life and is good but you feel the “i wish i’ve done more when i could”. I think If marshall had told her "but yes of course it's okay for you to have this experience without me" maybe she wouldn't have even left. Lily needed to feel supported by Marshall and actually the trip never had anything to do with her career but rather about finding her own identity outside of "lily and marshall" especially since he was about to become a successful lawyer while she was not.
She only snuck up there because if Marshall had been with any other woman her hold on him would disappear and she would fully suffer the consequences of her actions...
