I think S6 and S8 are probably the deepest and most emotional seasons out of all the 9. I love this show so much. This show to me is like Star Wars to Ted. I watch it in sickness, in happiness, in bad times and in good times. Emotionally, it’s very well-rounded. I don’t feel about any other shows like this.
I used to feel that way about this show too but now I have a hard time watching it all the way through since I watched it a lot with a now ex-girlfriend. Maybe one day the show won't make me automatically think of her.
i think 6-7-8 were the deepest and saddest ones. I mean barneys everlasting second, robins finding out she was not able to have kids, teds getting the "no" from robin were one of the most emotional scenes in the show.

Me as a german "what is a 'lebenslongershikshalshats'?" Closest translation: "lifelong treasure of destiny" Me: "OH HE MEANS "LEBENSLANGER 'SCHICKSALSSCHATZ'!!"
They made him a German caricature, but I like that he was kind of a version of Ted. A romantic at heart, believes in fate, kind of a knowitall but still kind. Victoria has a type.
@@mario2montano I LOVE HIMYM bit I prefer Monica and Chandler's way of thinking: they don't believe in soulmates, they just fell in love and work hard (some days harder) on their relationship
“If you have to think about it, you have not felt it” It’s beautiful. I couldn’t relate to it back then, but now I do. I suddenly realize how lucky I am because not everyone gets to feel this.
I agree with Klaus that there is a difference between someone who is just great but not absolutely the one and the one, but I don't agree that it always happens instantly. Some people are friends for years before they start to see each other in that light, some people break up several times before ending up together, sometimes someone can have an unrequited crush for years and then the other person finally falls for them. Sure, sometimes two people meet and it's perfect from the very beginning, but just because that's not the case doesn't mean they aren't meant for each other. Not everyone is like Ted and Tracy or Lily and Marshall. Robin and Barney are actually shown as an example of what Klaus is talking about, and they weren't like that.
I agree with you, but I think the point of the show is give people a bunch of romantic (and life) advice and you pick up parts that you will make use of. Like, there is also the one about how people change and you are nor the same person you were before, therefore "that" person was nor right for the old you but right for the new you.
@@djw3384 I guess that could explain Ted and Robin ending up together in the end. They were clearly not right for each other in their 20s, but maybe how they grew and changed as people over a couple of decades made it so they were right for each other by the time they were in their 50s.
You're probably thinking about love. But he wasn't talking about love, he was talking about lifelong treasure of destiny. Of course it will not always be instant that you will fall in love with someone. But that person will always be your lifelong treasure of destiny. Regardless of whether or not you have met them yet
This scene is quite representative of a key theme of the show. A constant message throughout - which makes the ending more confusing as it does a u-turn on this idea.
Well he was never quite sure about Robin, always changing his mind, and their relationship was very topsy turvy - even though they are good together. His time with Tracey was easy from the beginning. That being said, I don't think it's a very real message - even the most perfect relationships can take a lot of work. It just doesn't fit with the character development in the show. I didn't hate the ending by itself - but considering I watched all the show beforehand, it didn't make sense enough to accept it. I think it should have ended with the scene where Ted meets Tracey at this station, and left it open from there - sometimes less is more.
iQwobble I agree with you that an open ending would have been better. we didn't need to see what happens in the future. But the ending we were given is not one i find very objectionable, what i find annoying was the terrible execution of not just that season but of the entire season 9. Such a massive drop in standards compared to any of the other seasons. That is what made the changes in the last episode so glaring. character wise, they were perfectly plausible trajectories that they took, even though some of them may be unwelcome trajectories for the audience. The idea was original and thought provoking; the execution was what ruined an interestingly conceptualised series
It's more that a lot of the show is about character development, about highlighting how the characters really grow alongside each other, and then they break that character progress down considerably at the end. I didn't object to the death, but the sudden divorce just didn't correlate with everything else they had done or emphasised throughout.
iQwobble Character development isn't always linear and progressive. It can take a U-turn or can regress too when faced with tough situations. That is probably what the story they wanted to tell. But as I said earlier, they did a terrible job of telling it.
I remember watching this episode the day it premiered. When the thunder clashed and the heavy chorus kicked on the song "At Your Funeral" I got chills then I screamed, "OH MY GOD THE MOTHER IS GOING TO BE DEAD IN THE END OF THE SERIES!" Man, I hate it when I'm right. None of my friends believed me. And now I no longer have any friends.
The golden line is" ....if you have to think about it that means you have never felt it......".The background music just makes this moment perfect.Very underrated series.
Me too, I keep showing it to people as an example how Hollywood misrepresents other cultures. In this case it's mine but I have to assume it's just as bad for others as well.
For a comedy show, this series has made me cry so many times. And, in a way, that's why I love it! And how I understand what Klaus is saying! I've felt this way about my wife from the moment I met her, more and more everyday.
The only time I cried was the episode with Marshall's father dying. Jason Segel was told to start his lines after Lily ended with "it" But he was told that Lily would say she was pregnant. But her line about the dad ended up being "He didn't make it" Which threw him off. That's real shock on his face. He had to mentally backtrack and roll with it. That's why it's so amazingly touching.
The "if you have to think about it, you have not felt it" part always makes me feel guilty. I love my partner but I don't feel it in my hands and all that other stuff.
Doom Metal everytime I see this episode it makes me think of that as well I love the guy (2yrs) but I don't feel the "insertgermanwords"...I'm 20years old I'm still young but it still bothers me
you need to remember that how I met your mother, even though it's an amazing show, isn't real life, not everyone feels that in their life and even if u don't, that doesn't necessarily mean that your partner isn't the right person for you. Someone doesn't have to be perfect for you to be the right person for you.
agent G 021 what about when people you know or other people you don't know really well they talk about their partner being the perfect one and how they know its the one because of this and that and when both partners talk about it like that... what about that ? genuinely asking
@@captainchumbuwumba5835 I wouldnt worry, Ron Swanson from parks and rec. He's definitely not warm and fuzzy, however you never doubt he loves Diana. I would talk to your partner about if they're feeling loved or not. That should get rid of some stress
I personally think this was one of the most important scenes in the series. Ted was losing hope and God knows what would’ve happened if he lost it completely and settled for the next girl he met. Klaus here made him believe again.
The reason Robin is crying and Barney is looking out the cab is foreshadowing that they feel this way about each other and Ted feels this way about the mother disregarding the ending
I swear this show is like the Bible lol every time I go through something in life there's always an episode or a moment I can come back to and learn from to apply in my own life and keep moving forward no matter how hard. My favorite tv show of all time. No question.
It's simple: Robin is the Beinaheleidenschaftsgegenstand and Tracy is the Lebenslangerschicksalsschatz. But since he lost his Lebenslangerschicksalsschatz, he went back to the Beinaheleidenschaftsgegenstand. Almost perfect(Robin) --> Perfect(Tracy) --> Almost Perfect again(Robin) That's how his life paned out, which is better than it may seem (losing the perfection). I personally would have liked it to be: Almost perfect(Robin) --> Perfect(Tracy) but life kicked in. But it's nice that they released the alternate ending so that each one of us can decide which to choose.
this is tv series, not real life and it's name is "how i met your mother" not "how i ended up with your aunt"... i've got too much sadness in my own life, at least let me be happy for someone else, even if it's fictional
@Meme Thief But my life is my life, my problems are my problems. And fiction is fiction. When i play a game, or watch a movie/series, or read a book, of course i want to know the journey of a character and all the troubles and obstacles... But in the end I also want to escape from reality, which means i expect happy ending even if its cliche.
I showed this scene to this girl I'm dating.... I really hope she's my future wife..... Edit: she wasn't.... :( Edit to the edit : found someone else we've been dating for close to a year now . Still going strong and seems like she'll be my wife XD Edit to the edit to the edit: I'm going to ask her to be my wife this summer after 2 years. Everything feels so simple around her,the future seems bright and exciting alongside her even with all the bs going on in the world .
It's too bad that what most people focus on in this awesome scene is the German accent... The story is from Ted's perspective so the point is that he probably doesn't remember exactly what the German words were and is making up gibberish for the story so who cares if you're German and still can't understand Klaus, that's not the point
@@nicoprieto8979 They are but the pronunciation is really really horrible same as in Grimm he simply does not possess the ability to speak German and thus does not really understand what he's saying and probably remembering the words. If you try really hard yes you can understand him but as I said earlier his pronunciation ist quite bad ^^ (I'm German by the way)
Love how he has this big speech about ending up with someone that you’re destined for but the writers had Ted end up with someone he’s not compatible with at all
They weren't compatible when they FIRST met because ted wanted a wife and kids and robin didn't want that, she wanted to become a successful reporter. Well Ted got his wife and kids (sadly the wife passes away) and Robin became a successful reporter. So now they are a good fit,
@@footballchat6940 They arent compatible regardless, its like doing it out of convenience rather than desire. Ted loves Robin desperately, but theres obviously an imbalance and its not as reciprocrated. They are completely incompatible
Here you go: •Ted sees Victoria (Soul Meets Body) • Ted and Robin rooftop (Inside of Love) •Ted kisses Victoria (Spit on a stranger) •Milk (Mother of Pearl) •Ted kisses Robin, Lily leaves Marshall (This Modern Love) • You Stole Blue French Horn for Me (No One Here) •The Platinum Rule (Black Tears) •The Yellow Umbrella (Beautiful Beat) •Right Place Right Time (Glad Girls) •The Leap (Prophets) •ProFFessor and GOOD ENOUGH (Oxford Comma) •We've been on this date before (Rewind) •A Kid needs a hoop (I'll Come For You) •Victoria returns, Barney sees Nora (Victoria) •Barney and Robin, Disaster Averted (Hey) •Tick Tick Tick (Heavy Hours) •Robin moves out. For those that don't know; Lebenslangerschicksalsschatz and Beinaheleidenschaftsgegenstand are only made up words. They do exist in German, but only separately. Lebenslang = for life, Schicksal = destiny, Schatz = treasure, beinahe = almost, Leidenschaft= passion, Gegenstand = object. Then Leidenschaft contains the word "leiden" which means suffer. It is an elaborate joke actually, because in German you can put words together like that as it's possible in English, but you can't do that in many other languages.
Love this speech by Klaus, I have come back to this speech as I split up with my long time girlfriend earlier this week and I realised afterwards she is exactly what Victoria is to Klaus..not quite the perfect girl for me..although I loved her I never really felt that it had any longevity and would end eventually..my perfect girl is out there..somewhere
Like how this pops up in my recommendation from time to time. Brings back good memories and makes me realize I finally found my Lebenslanger Schicksalsschatz.
i am crying even though i have seen this a hundred times. just a 27 year old female with no one to turn to. hope he’s right.. i hope the “when” is somewhere down my road 🥺
I don't want to see this series ever again because at the end of the show it broke my heart and it took me week to recover from the shock that the ending gave.
This scene and others like it builds up Ted meeting the mother as an important milestone event in the show's timeline. And yet, in the finale it is treated as just this minor distraction on the way towards the end of Ted's journey. Hence why I stick with the alternative: it at least makes me feel like it was worth the wait.
The alternate ending they had should've been the actual ending except for the fact that they made Ted say it was easy instead of the hard part that they had for the official ending
Im talking about end game, if i wanted a realistic ending, id go into the real world and live that. This is a TV show, it's fiction, it's comedy/drama/etc etc, fuck this ending
@@CodeOssyria The thing is, the alternative ending is more believable than the original, you mean to tell me that after all the heartbreak ted went through with robin, he still loved her, and you mean to tell me robin got jealous because he was with tracy? In real life, ted wouldnt want her back not for a second. Especially if she only wanted him when he was with someone he loved.
I'm german and I get a headache to understand the second term he uses..."lebenslanger Schicksalsschatz" (which are two words btw) is never used by anyway, but atleast it's correct. "Beinahe Leidenschaftsgegenstand" doesn't even make sense...
These are no german words. But they should be, so cute. :-D And do germans really sound like that when they talk english? (I'm german and I hope I don't sound like that :-O )
His description of “destined love” is honestly beautiful. We all know how disappointing the finale was in terms of staying consistent to the themes that were presented throughout the show, but I think we can all still appreciate how well this scene was put together.
I love HIMYM and it has taught me amazing life lessons. But I feel they have kind of a twisted view of love. Love doesn't have to be instantaneously and letting go of someone you love doesn't have to be a bad thing. Sometime love just isn't enough to make something work.
@@ramiroperez2461 not necessarily. I've known a couple that were really in love. They were together for 3 years on and off. But they had very different opinions, views and ideas for the future. They fought all the time but couldn't let eachother go. When they finally did after he moved away, she was miserable for a time. But eventually she found someone great and they live together now and her ex is now married to a lovely girl. So it all worked out for them in the end. I don't think they would be this happy now if they had stayed together.
I agree with this. I experienced this kind of love 3 years ago. It was so passionate that it was toxic. I'm glad I'm not in that relationship anymore. I'm now with someone else. The kind of love we have for each other was something that we nurtured on our own. It grew in all those moments we shared together. That kind of love that you build on your own is harder to break.
proper gremlin ted was obsessed with her and only wanted her to fill the role of his perfect woman but without her personality, throughout the show there was a big emphasis on that
This scene proves that Robin and Barney were that person to each other and the writers took that from us. The gave us that German word that I can’t pronounce or type but they gave us that for Robin and Barney. And what do we have left. Absolutely nothing but heartbreak.
My only problem with this show is the ending! We spent 4 seasons building up to that wedding! İt was amazing and the show just took it all away from us in like 5 minutes...
Fun fact: The song playing the background was also the same song used in a 2008 Ford Edge commercial, featuring none other than the actress who played the Mother herself, Cristin Millioti. A favorite song of hers, perhaps?
I know that. I'm just wondering if it was only a coincidence that it also played on a commercial featuring the same actress, or if there really is some kind of connection between it and this scene.
The songs were always the keys. Like when Victoria first reappears and the Kinks start playing while at the architects ball. The second Band of Horses kicked in during this scene and they showed the mother I was heartbroken for Ted.
If only he knew how bad I needed that storage space of "our memories" , needed to move on. But I did it without him. I am now the most powerful person I know. Without him.
Story Timeee: The first time I got introduced to this show was in first grade. When I was in first grade my mother use to watch this show all the time, and I use to watch it with her, even tho I didn’t understand any of it. but a year or two later she decided to rewatch it. I sat down with her and we rewatched them. I didn’t remember barely anything from the show. I only remembered the theme song, so it was like watching a show I hadn’t really seen. I fell in love with it and it was ( and still is) my favorite show. When I got to the end I didn’t remember Tracy died, so let’s just say I cried for a while after that. But ever since then my mother and I watch HIMYM every year at least 3-4 times each year. I lost track how many times we have rewatched it lol, but I always loved this scene. I don’t know, but it is just one of my favorite scenes in the series.
I am German and I don´t know these words. They do not really exist - and frankly, not make a lot of sense. But at least, even though the actor has a pretty heavy accent, I can understand him when he speaks German, not like a lot of other American actors pretending to know German.
