Let's talk about how I plan to run a sub 3 marathon in December 2023. This might be a ridiculous goal but we may as well go for it and see what happens. Any tips appreciated.

Yep, that's the one. I'll be starting the training block mid June. What are you using for your marathon prep? I'm debating on the Nike run club app or hal higdons training plan.

Good luck! I'm excited to watch your progress. I'll be training to go sub 3:30 in Chicago in October. PR 3:32 last year but a string of not so great performances since then. Training cycles build on each other though so I'm feeling hopeful!

Hi James, looking forward to your videos on training... I'm planning on running the Dublin City marathon this October. It'll be my first and hoping to get around 3.30 - 3.40 I'm obviously being very optimistic as a 51 year old but you have to aim high 😂

Looking forward to seeing your training leading up. I plan on running the Marine Corps marathon in late October and “hoping” to go sub 3:30… looking for the right training plan to get me there. Do you have any suggestions?

Are you doing any marathon-paced efforts in your long runs? When you ran your 3:28 marathon did anything in your training indicate that you could sustain that pace for the race? I’m running my first marathon in a couple weeks!

For that training I didnt do too much running at marathon pace or under, most was slower runs. On the day I was hoping to go for a 3:35 and never expected to hit a 3:30 but just felt great on the day. Same with my half marathon. I had never ran anymore than 4 mile in the 6:XXs but managed to pull out a 1:29 on the day.

If you hit sub 1.20 in the half by Oct, sub 3 in the full is achievable. Good luck 👍

I think you should aim for 3:15 - unless you have a lot of genetic talent, aiming for sub 3 by December is a recipe for injury. I just did 2:56, took years of consistent training, had to get to 2 months of 100k average, max of 120k over 18 week block

Potentially! I think 3:10 is doable and sub 3 is a big stretch. I’ll be able to see much closer to the start of the block and train accordingly. Congrats on the 2:56! That’s amazing 👌

The training was going well until about 3 weeks ago and have picked up a knee injury. Have had to significantly lower miles, unfortunately. Hoping to pick them back up in the coming weeks.
