God bless mechanics...After 30 plus years as a building contractor, I have had many used vehicles, like dozens...Finding a mechanic you can trust is like finding the girl of your dreams...:)...I respect their hard work, because I've fixed my own many times. but when you get into transmissions or engines, or suspension parts; it's much more productive to let a real mechanic do the work...You're in one of the toughest businesses and few people realize that what you do could potentially kill someone if it's not done right. It's the same in my business. May all your nuts loosen on the first turn...:)

Stephen Cox says any mobile mechanic should be charging $100/hr. Said he charges $2.50/mile and parts you add on I think he said 40% markup on the parts...I think that's what he said on markup. He said his best year as a mobil mechanic before RU-vid when he was really hustling he made $238k one year. When you break it down to hours worked a week it was only like 16 hours of work, by the time you figure the money you made on parts and the remainder on labor. Like he said don't sell yourself cheap your providing a convince. He also said resist the urge to discount cause you attract a certain type of customer that you may not want.

I'd suggest when you talk to the dealership, be up front and let them know that after your diagnosis, if it's something you can't handle that you'll refer them to the dealership for the work. That way you both benefit from the relationship.

For over 45 years I’ve been diy home mechanic in Manchester UK. Appreciate these videos and think Earnest is Top Guy! Folk often say modern cars are too complicated to work on but I just learn the new methods and buy new tools when needed. Still cheaper than dealers, but I also know job done properly!!! Unfortunately dealers often take your car round the back, then let apprentice mess it up, but still charge top price!
@dimmn82
@dimmn82 3 года назад
So what to you do when the job isn't done right because you didn't follow guidelines that you didn't knew existed. Dealership prices are not as expensive as you think. They have to price match other shops in the area to be competitive. Really tired of using dealerships as a form of an excuse to not want to spend money to have a professional do the job.

Nice video. I have a mobile locksmith business and I learned early on to not be the cheapest guy in town, and to work with other local locksmiths. Any mobile locksmith or mechanic is gonna have less overhead than an business with employees or a shop. That’s part of why mobile can be cheaper. I usually do pricing based on the job but found it usually equals what I’d make if it was charged by the hour. That’s kinda when you know your skills are matching your pricing or you need to increase your hourly rate. Bottom line is to make enough to feel like your getting ahead and it’s worth the trouble when “fit hits the shan”... Btw, always follow the laws, codes and carry insurance. Thanks for sharing, Ernest🙏🏼✌🏼

It's not them just being jerks. They really can't help you and they aren't making any money. You can't expect them to call a tech upfront to speak to you, then that tech is losing money.

I was working on a Mercedes for a friend and when I went to the dealer for parts the parts guy asked me if I was working on my own car or someone else's car. I told him I was working on someone else's car and he turned around and said okay I'll give you 15 percent mechanics discount. Blew my mind. I charge $78.50/hour. 15% markup on parts. $90 to diagnose. I use Identifix for my service info and labor times. I like Identifix because of their Direct-Hit platform and Tech feed. In the extremely rare instances I can't diagnose a complex issue, I spend $50 for a Direct-Hit call. They have a certified master tech from whatever manufacturer you're working on, call you (usually within 30- mins to an hour) and walk you thru the proper diagnosis. If they get the diagnosis wrong, Identifix pays the repair bill! (Has never happened to me) It's only like $250 a month for Identifix. I make around $2000-$3500 a week being mobile so Identifix makes perfect sense and is extremely useful! I think you're cutting yourself short my man. What we do is worth damn good money and you can still beat the shops. Plus, having higher prices, keeps the clapped out, never maintained bottom feeders away...

Sometimes the truth hurts in the wallet. State inspection stations however have you by the tires. Pay their price or find another. Meanwhile you do not want to break the law and if you wait till the last day your options may be very limited. In PA if you have an honest place keep it. If not go at least 15 days before expiration so you can shop around if cost seems unreasonable. I have found at least in the Scranton pa area. That an inspection licence is a licence to legally steal

I hate being a mobile mechanic. Customer watching as you work on their car sometimes even trying to correct you. Worst of all you can’t charge a decent price if you start on their car and it starts raining you have to finish the job in the rain or you don’t paid. Just not worth it so I now own a shop which is a lot better. You have a lift and you don’t have to crawl under a car or crouch to work on a brake and all that. Most important you can charge properly. I charge 150 flat rate. You may pay for a space but it’s all worth it. I have had my shop for one year now. I make around 10k a month. More than enough to pay my space and even pay all my other bills. I can work rain or shine. I can even work late into the night just lock my shop and I’m safe working inside.

@dimmn82 3 года назад
It's a subscription based software/website that gives you pricing, repair tips, guidance, wiring diagrams, etc. Unless you are a professional with your own business, it's not worth looking into. If you work at a shop, they will have something to use. If they don't, find somewhere else to work because you will be thrown under the bus.
@dimmn82
@dimmn82 3 года назад
You owe it to yourself to get a AllData, ProDemand, or Identifix. Preferrably ProDemand and Identifix. You are screwing yourself on money you could be making otherwise. ProDemand not only gives you guides on how to do every repair, wiring diagrams, but it also does pricing for you. The repair hours, everything. Identifix is a universal website for every mechanic. You type in the code or concern and it gives you a list of what other technicians did, narrowing down what you need to do. Never trust google to give you those answers. People are gonna see this and go to try and do a repair that is out of their capability and before they even realize it, there's parts everywhere and they won't know what to do and neither will technicians because they have no idea what the customer did.

AllData will give your labor time for different jobs. Also instructions on how to replace things. Etc. How to diagnose things, etc. I have to say as you learn how to work on cars, that labor time is really generous in many cases. We still used it at the shop I worked at. I've changed careers since then. We also charged list prices on parts which was a lot more than what we paid. Lots of overhead, have to pay for all kinds of things. Sometimes a job ended up taking a lot longer because of issues with the car. So kind of evens out in the end.

Why don't you have a flat hourly rate plus parts? Also do you have a emergency call out fee?

Another way, you can price your jobs is going to yourmechanic.com Yourmechanic Is a mobile mechanic business that 3rd party small business are approved by yourmechanic You just put in your car info and what you want done and give you a price You can even remove the cost of the part, if you have it and want them to install your 3rd party part You can also book the time and date you want

Why are you letting Google dictate your rates? You can't expect a small rural area to pay the same price as NYC. Google probably averages it all out which could be costing you money or making people pay more than they should be paying for their specific area. Rates at shops are based on Chilton hours plus parts and shop fees. I'd call shops in your area (including the dealers) for a quote (including what their labor rate is) and go from there. You really should have your own hourly labor rate worked out from the start anyway. Then you add parts to the quote and any misc fees you might need for the job. Don't forget; you are selling a major convenience to your customers. Get paid for it accordingly by NOT selling yourself short in the process.

Don't be too quick to discount experience, it may be a thermostat for $10, plus 15min labour, then he spots a cracked radiator/bulging hose, leaking head gasket.... could have cost you an engine rebuild/replacement. Often better to at least get it looked over by someone experienced as it may not always be what you think it is. Remember $50/hr x 8 hr isn't $400, it's about $22, as tax, insurance, vehicle running costs, down time, writing bills, research, chasing parts, marketing, youtube uploads, he's working min 80hr a week at about $5 / hr....

I respect you and what you do but I just wonder why? Why would you wanna work on the ground in the elements? Working in a shop is safer, more convenient and way more productive because parts houses bring the parts for you. I pay my techs very well so it shouldn't be about the money. Just curious on your perspective. Plus not to mention the liability and warranty factor. At a shop we can easily be affiliated with Napa Auto care or Orielly and then the customer get a nation wide warranty and if they have a failure the labor dollars or the money for the part doesn't come out of my pocket, its 100% backed up by the Auto Care program.

I tend to do this when writing up an estimate/quote (or I use yourmechanic.com's online instant quote system as a guide). Many customers tend to want an on the spot ballpark figure though. As I've gotten more experienced I find it easier to give conservative labor estimates based on an hourly rate and how long I expect certain jobs to take on average.
