How I Price My Cookies & How Long an Order Takes

How much do I charge for cookies? How long does 1 cookie take to decorate from start to finish? What about a set, how long does it take all together? Is it possible to make a profit? See below some of my thoughts on pricing cookies (after the links).

How I make my cookies: • The Best Sugar Cookies...

Follow me from start to finish on a special cookie order I did recently. Although I don't sell cookies anymore (just make them for very close family & friends), I talk about pricing and how much I'd make if I would price them the same as when I started out.
It always depends on your area and in general how expensive you are. Where I live has gotten quite expensive so make sure your prices reflect that. When you first start out, of course you will start a bit cheaper, but make sure you are not selling yourself short and giving away your cookies for free.
Make sure to factor in things like details, colours, how big the cookies are, if you will be bagging them, adding metallics etc. All these things affect the price as it takes extra time and effort or special materials and should be reflected in the price,.
When I first started, I Charged between $2.50 & $3 for my very first paid order. The next order I said I would make my base price $3. That lasted a few months as I realized how much work goes into making cookies and how much I spent on supplies, tools and packaging. Then I said I won't go less than $4 a cookie and that would be for a simpler cookie, details, metallics & bags/bows would all be extra.
For this set I would have charged $6-$7 dollars per cookie. $6 for just the cookie and $7 would be with packaging them and the ribbon.
There is no right or wrong, but if you want to make it a profitable business, you have to find the right clientele who will pay premium prices for premium cookies. I'd rather make 100 cookies at $6 a cookie than do 200 cookies at $3. So if you lose some clients that don't want to pay your prices, it's ok. Work smarter not harder!

I took a beginner level icing class at Biscuiteers when I was in London, and it was awesome. Everything was set up and ready to go when everyone got there….came home and tried to recreate that experience for my DILs. Tried. Holy cow, having never done something like this I had NO idea how much work goes into setting up, prep, baking, cooling/drying, decorating, packaging….never mind the years of skill and training that went into each little work of art. It really was eye opening and I have an even higher level of admiration and respect for the artists that do this…and for their prices. They definitely deserve to be paid properly for their art/product.

I had the same thing happen to me when I first started! I watched tons of videos of decorating but had no idea how long the process took from start to finish and was shocked when I went to do my first set!! Pricing them is hard because if you would buy 1 or 2 cookies, I don't think people would question a $5 dollar cookie, but when you go to buy a few dozen and you're paying a couple hundred dollars then people think it's expensive. But they are worth it, there's so much that goes into them, that's for sure!!

I didn’t go to a class, but I did watch plenty videos. The Little Cookie company was the easiest to follow and it taught me a lot! But Lord, when I did my first practice and the my first order🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️. Like you guys said, the time and the set up. I have learned to pace myself and get things ready at different phases. Even though I have watched many ways to decorate them, I stay in the realm of keeping them simple. I have learned the hard way not to overwhelm myself with the cookies that require more work and time. Maybe one day…..but right now I just don’t have that much with my full time job and all. But I want so bad to be able to write on cookies. 😊

Awww, you're so sweet, thank you 🥰 I always feel the need to answer questions, I just feel so bad if I don't! It's not easy some days. Every so often, I go quiet on social media and usually it's when I'm burnt out. My house is almost always a mess and I look like I just rolled out of bed most of the time 🤣 but my kids are my motivation. I try to be there for them but also need to provide for them, so its hard to balance. But my oldest thinks it's pretty awesome that his mom's a youtuber 😁 so I guess that's worth it!

Wow, great video! I wish I woulda seen it earlier. About 25 years ago I was going to sell biscotti to coffee shops, and after doing the math and a business plan I realized that I would be making about $4.00 an hour, not including drive time, fuel, and mileage. So my dream was squashed and I got another job. Now I'm retired and I'm gonna sell cookies from time to time at craft show type stuff, but it will all balance out to barely making a profit, while still having fun doing what I love to do, which is making (or maybe just eating) cookies and chocolate truffles. I wish you and your viewers great success and good fortune in your endeavors! I am shaped like a Buddha, so I rubbed my tummy for you all!

Haha you are so sweet!!! Thank you!! Baking is definitely a tough business to be in, there is room to make a good profit, but I feel you have to really put in some time and build your customer base (but I suppose just like anything else). But it makes a great hobby, and people love having custom home made things given or gifted to them or even buy them for special occasions, cause you can't get these everywhere!

You do your cookies the way I do cakes: splitting steps to separate days. I bake cakes & prep buttercream one day, stack and crumb coat the next, decorate the third day. I cannot imagine the stress it would cause me to take 45 minutes of adjusting the consistency, though! Wow!
@LittleCookieCo
@LittleCookieCo Год назад
I find its much easier to split them into days, then my whole day isn't just making cookies from morning to night (although I've done that before 🙈). And yes, consistency is super time-consuming. A little water goes a long way, so it's adding a few drops at a time and mixing and checking every time until you get it close to perfect, and before you know it, it's taken 45 minutes 😄

I KNOW RIGHT! Like these are ARTISANAL, Hand crafted, from scratch, baked goods with tender loving care. I've made cake pops....boy that was a ton of work. I got put on the spot by someone having a shower. I said sure ..instantly regretting. Then she said she wanted 100....in 3 different flavors. I was like girl.....that's your gift then because it's pricey with time and effort, decorating and packaging and a ton of work. I literally thought ok it's gonna be 1 flavor and like 50 max. Uhhh no this person had zero clue how much work it was and took advantage instead of being mindful that they were putting me out and adding more to the equation with the different flavors and quantity. They knew they were getting a steal. I did it out of love and kindness but nope never again. My sister had to help me she was like you're crazy for agreeing to this I told her I was put on the spot but this would be the first, last and only time I do this much baking work without proper compensation. Honey my legs, my back ...they regretted it too lol.

A lot of people don't understand just how much time and effort goes into it. There's also getting the ingredients, the packaging products, and if they don't have specific designs, you have to research/draft up ideas. Definitely a lot of work, but the important thing is to find customers who do appreciate and will pay. And they are out there!!

Absolutely'! I don't run a cookie business but just started this as a hobby a couple years ago. Once I started decorating I was shocked at how much people are UNDERCHARGING for decorated cookies. The time involved the go through all the steps can be absolutely insane if you actually want to turn out evenly baked and beautifully decorated cookies. I think people shouldn't charged less than $80 a dozen. Minimum! Maybe that sounds like alot but I think too many cookiers are underpaid for their time and skills. Again I'm just a cookie hobbyist but that is my humble opinion! 😌🫶🏽

I used to accept orders without knowing the theme and then they would say the theme and I'm like 😲 in my head thinking i can't do that. But I didn't have the heart to say no, I can't do it, after accepting the order. But I alwyad found a way to get it done. And if people are asking you it's because they've seen your work and know you can do it and want your cookies!! So don't forget that. It's definitely hard, there may be tears at times haha but you'll learn sooo much and every time will be that much easier! And I'm so glad you said that because I want my channel to be exactly that. Whatever question someone might have, I'll have an answer for them. I used to have so many questions, too, and had to search all over and couldn't find answers sometimes. And I never want to charge people, I want to make sure anyone can get the information! It's an expensive hobby anyway, so at least if the learning is free, it's one less thing for someone to worry about! ❤️

At $5 per cookie she still isn’t even making minimum wage for her time let alone the cost of the ingredients. She said it took her 20 hours to complete them and considering that she was completing 3 cookies per hour. So if she only charges $5/cookie she’s not making minimum wage which I believe she said was $17 something in her area and it’s not covering the cost of her ingredients or all the lovely packaging. At $5 a cookie she is doing it for the love of the process but definitely not getting paid for her time and I doubt that she’s making anything at all when she takes into account her ingredients and the packaging. It’s a shame but hand made custom cookies like this should be $10/cookie which I know makes it only for the elite that could afford them but it’s like everything else hand made there is a significant cost.
@LittleCookieCo
@LittleCookieCo 6 месяцев назад
$5 a cookie definitely isn't enough, however if I was doing this for my day job I would have to up my prices or buy things to make the process smoother to maintain a cheaper price (for example making a stencil for the letters instead of hand piping them). But if your customer would want those special designs hand piped, you have to make sure to charge for them. If you are just doing it for a side job, and for the love of the process then having some extra cash comes in handy. But it's all about balance and what you want to do with the business whether take to to the next level which I never did or maintain a side gig for when you want to do them! Either or is totally OK too!!

I think they made be cake sheet pans or cookie sheets. But never had issues with them sticking, they usually pop off easily. I've even used an aluminum pan I have and they don't stick either without using anything, but I prefer dark pans so my cookie bottoms get golden! I have this tutorial that might help on what recipe I use and shows the baking sheets as well. And I can sometimes put even more than a dozen with no issues, I ended up putting 16 on a few of the sheets I baked!! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3orMJXkKk5o.html

The best part is they're cookies, and I'm sure you will never be short of people wanting to eat them!!

Great video and thank you for the help! I am currently in the process of jump starting my cookie/cake business. How far in advance do you recommend making the cookies and how long will the cookies stay fresh if you put them in an airtight container, right after baking and cooling? Just from your personal experience?
@LittleCookieCo
@LittleCookieCo 21 день назад
That's awesome, congrats on starting your business, it's scary but so rewarding!! I usually do the cookies on a Sunday or Monday if I have to give them on Saturday. So it gives me a night to bake and a few nights to decorate and then a day to take pictures and package. I like to put them in an airtight container once they've cooled down after I bake them, and then when I'm decorating them, I don't put them in the container at all until they're completely done and dried. I've never had a complaint about freshness when doing that!

Hi! I actually have another gold that I still use as it hasn't run out yet, which is called sunflower sugar art gold. It is not approved in all countries but it was here where I am (but I don't think it was in the US). So Dazzle Dust is a great alternative with the same results that's approved and edible. You mix the powder with alcohol (the higher the alcohol content the better your results). I use Everclear with 90% alcohol and then you paint it on.

Thank you!! I don't really measure, I kind of go by feel, but I would say they are somewhere around 5/16" roughly. I feel like a 1/4" is too thin and 3/8" is better but possibly a bit thick (once baked they rise a bit and plus icing layers makes for a big cookie). But that being said, some of them turn out thicker and thinner in the same batch as I don't use guides to roll.

I'm making this exact cookie for a friend who is getting married in one week. I started baking on Saturday, outlined Sunday, and flooded Monday and Tuesday. She ordered 70 cookies and I still have about 20 cookies to do (outline and flood). I still have to write their initials and do the heart for each cookie and then package them. This is a lot of work, but I'm learning to pace myself. My question is how long will the cookies keep if I have to continue to do this and do I need to keep them refridgerated? I have only four more days to complete the order (which I will have them ready) so she can pick them up.

Hi! I hope your cookies went well!! The cookies don't need to be refrigerated, it's actually not good to do that because it can cause condensation and ruin the icing a bit. But I usually take about 5- 6 days of decorating and until they are eaten at a party and are totally fine!

How long did you make cookies before you started selling? I've had a cluster of personal events that I've planned and brought cookies to and am getting requests to take orders, but it feels too soon. Wondering how long it took to find that confidence ❤
@LittleCookieCo
@LittleCookieCo 11 месяцев назад
I think it was about a year or year and a half, but I wasn't really making cookies that whole time. I had made a few sets here and there for friends' events and people kept asking if I sell them, so eventually I kind of gave in and did it. It was so nerve-wracking, and my first set took me forever because I wanted it to be really good. Then it was full of craters, and I was so upset. But the customer loved them and I started getting more and more enquiries. It took me a while to get confident though, I'd always be worried someone wouldn't like them. But you know, I think until you actually dive in and start taking orders, you'll never really feel confident. You can make a million free sets for others, but once you start charging, you feel the pressure. But if people are asking you and see your work or have eaten your cookies, then they're asking you for a reason! We are our own worst critics, so I would say if people are asking, and you want to, go for it!

@LittleCookieCo That's good to know. I just started making cookies and I was up for literally 24 hours last weekend from 11am to almost noon the next day trying to finish an order because I way under estimated the time it would take to decorate them all. I thought I'd bake the morning before and decorate them all in 2 or 3 hours in the afternoon and let them dry over night. People in the videos make it look so fast and easy. 30 cookies. Literally took me the better part of 24 waking hours to finish them. I've been baking for 20 years. I can whip out a couple hundred decorated cupcakes in a day. I usually flood one by one and put them in, then by the time I'm done ill go back to the first one, take it out and start my details and then put it back in. Once I'm done for the night, they're usually semi dry, so I turn it off and leave the door open and pull the trays out slightly for more air and leave them like that til I decorate again!

Why did you stop your cookie business if i May ask.

I kind of fell into selling cookies, like most people I started doing them for fun and then people started asking me for orders. I had a full time job, so i was mostly doing orders late at night after my child was in bed. As I started getting more and more orders, it was hard to say no and I ended up taking on too much most of the time. It was hard to balance both and after I had my 2nd child I just couldn't do it anymore. I was tempted to try it full time but with a young family and cost of living soaring where I live I felt like it would be best to stay at my full time job. I did miss doing them, so I do them once in a while for family or close friends but as gifts. But I would get lots of questions about how to make cookies, so I found a passion of helping others on how to make them! So I still get to make cookies, but only when I want 😁

@@LittleCookieCo thank you for responding first of all ♥️ you & your talent is truly admirable I must say!! This is totally understandable!! I am a first time mom and wanted to help bring income working from home so I started my small cookie business and your videos have helped me so much! I always share I got the sugar cookie recipe and royal icing recipe from you specifically bc no way I could take credit so thank you very much for that! I have also learned a lot from your other videos! Thank you for creating this content for us 💗

Aww thank you so much ❤️🥰 and I can't take credit for the cookie recipe (that's all Lilaloa) just put a few tweaks on it. It's tough with a little one around so kudos to you! My first was good, he never touched my cookies and slept reasonably well, but my 2nd was a terrible sleeper and when I tried to do cookies at night, he'd never let me! And even to this day he always tries to sneak a bite of the cookies so I always have to watch him 🤣. Just make sure you charge your worth! Don't be scared to up your prices if you need to or charge extra for details!! There's always people that will pay for your talent 🥰

I’m like you as far as the time used to decorate them. Even though it’s just me and my dog, I find I do my best work at nighttime. And that with any treats I do.

So you didn’t actually say how much you charge? Wasn’t that the point of the video?

I talk about it at the very end these ended up being gifts but I say roughly how much I'd charge if they weren't and what to take into consideration when pricing your cookies
