Thanks for the video Mike. It's been 17 years since my last Edelbrock rebuild. I couldn't remember how to do it. But after your video I'm off to rebuild my "new to me" used carb. Great video. Thanks again. Greg
Thank you sir. I have this carb sitting on my 73 Monte's 350 which has been sitting for about 15 years. Hope to have it running by the end of the year; this video should help. Thanks again...
Thanks for posting. My carb could use a complete overhaul but I think most of the issue is due to worn accelerator pump. I get a pop every now and the on accel usually from a stop. This video helps a lot now i know exactly what i need to do.
Thanks for the upload. My 79 chevy has the same carb. Couldn't decide if I should try to rebuild it myself or by a brand new one. Definitely going to try to rebuild it.
This looks far less intimidating than most people make it out to be. I work on small electronics, so this seems easy by comparison. My only curiosity is how properly find parts and to property adjust settings, especially to meet SMOG requirements here in California. First things first, i'll just try and pass smog first, then i'll go through and remove anything that is SMOG related. I want more power out of my engine and the emissions crap robs the engine of power, bigtime. It's a 79 Dodge 360ci, 635CFM Carter AFB/Edelbrock setup. Thank you for this video, i very much appreciate the walk through. I wonder if that 4 woman, 1 man jacuzzi is still for sale.
thanks Nicholas, maybe a 79 is exempt, I know here in pa if you drive under 5000 miles a year you don't need emissions sticker, thanks I will check on that jacuzzi, lol. mike
the AFB / Eldebrock carb you can change the Jet OR the rod and have an idea of your change. BUT you cant change both at the same time and know what your change is. but i have a program that will calculate it right. but i have lost it. but i can get it from my son. ill be sending to him to get the URL to get to the program.
There was a time when surgery was performed as follows, doc would give you a few shots of whiskey then a stick to bite on and cut your leg of with a wood saw. ( after he takes a shot himself of coarse) then stitching using horse hair from its tail. A splash of whiskey on the wound and a shot of penicillin. All of the above was performed in a wood shed and totally winging it. *That’s this guy with a carburetor * ....and I’m 100% cool with it
"thats the way iam going to clean it. good enough for me." in the past i have about 200 AFB / Edelbrock carbs. INMHO if you get it VERY clean. I.E. like you said get the holes clean. i think you will do fine. BUT remember the link on the accelerator pump is a S link NOT a Z link.
This looks like the old Carter AFB carburetors. Edelbrock must have bought them out. I've rebuilt many of these over the years. One comment, do you have a single or double throttle return spring on it? It's a good ideal to have two in case one breaks. Many cars used to have a smaller diameter spring inside the outside spring.
weber bought holley,& edelbrock, cant beat a weber carb.holley were heavy garbage carbs, best old carb was the ford thermaquad.with the plastic plate.drag guys swore by them.best carby for a v8,4 side draughts.or fuel injection.but cant beat the sound of side draughts.loved my twin cam escort.,ausie..
hi 931, you can go on youtube and look under "How to adjust and edelbrock carburetor," they also give you a how to video if you buy a new one, I hope it helps, thanks mike
I just finished rebuilding my edelbrock carburetor using your rebuild video. When I put it back on my truck, it keeps backfiring up thru the carburetor and you can see a flash of flame. What have I done wrong?
i got 1990 k5 blazer 5.7 had it rebuild with a few up grades everything is pretty mush stock i up graded the cam to a howard cam rattler lift 225/230 duration 0.50/227/235 centerline 03 i still have the factory swirl port heads i got headers 3' pipes all the way back i up graded my torque converter to 2000 to 2400 stall and 4:10 gears i just put my engine in about a week ago it was a tbi so i converted it to carb...im having problem trying to get it to run right i put a brandnew edelbrock carb 1406 on it..i got 12-887 holley regulator set it to 6 psi i got it to run starts up good but its backfiring and popping out my exhaust ..i have a vacuum port on my regulator but did not hook it up dont no if thats the problem or not..or is the carb to small for my set up...you can smell the burning and the raw gas in park when u accelerate and give it more gas it sound good but at idling its popping and backfiring like someome popping fire crackers..tell me what you think
My first guess would be timing, I always do it by hand and feel first, also make absolutely sure you did not cross the wires, I done that before, and didn't catch it for a while, it's something simple,
something could be bent or stuck or dirt or something keeping it open, It could be almost anything, hard call elelbrocks are usually bullet proof, I don't know what to say, thanks mike
Dirty? Should have seen the one I just rebuilt. You couldn't even see the jets in the bottom of the bowls. Super fine sediment stacked level with the jets. Exterior was clean. The guy would never touch a carburetor unless he was replacing them. So that's what he did. When ever an engine stopped running right he'd just pick up a new carb and swap it out. I have an endless supply used yet unmolested carbs. I add a dab of anti-seize to all the screws to combat the aluminium from galling. Nothing worse than the treads coming out with the screw.
hm nice and simple I'm still debating on whether I should buy a pre-owned carb for my truck and rebuild it or just spend the extra money on a brand spanking new one instead
@@mikehaduck-travel-mechanic884 Thanks for the advice I decided to purchase one preowned because I'm on a budget I'll be sure to use my girlfriends toothbrush in the process of the rebuild
Decent enough video; but for heavens sake man, what number carb are you working on? Whose kit are you using and what's the number for the kit? Where did you purchase the kit? This video would be much more useful with that info included! Regardless, thank you. I do appreciate your efforts.
Mike Haduck - Travel - Mechanics - Music my dad told me that back in the sixties he would line his truck bed with rubber tarp (rubber sheets used for commercial roofing applications) and fill’er up at an agriculture water fill station, and he and his friends would roll around with their mobile pool.
