How I Shower Living in my Car | Travel Snacks 

I'm a former trucker, and generally speaking, if you fill up, the showers are free. Now that I'm living on the road, I shower at truck stops occasionally. What I do is ask truckers if they're going to shower; most don't, so I just get their shower code. I offer them a few bucks, but they almost always refuse. Just a thought.

I don't live in my car, but enjoy all the tips. Because you never know what life may hand you. You are very entertaining.

Learn how to store water from where ever you can get it, in old water containers for spot washing! I am a female vet, and we had to use our helmets to spot wash out in the field if there wasn't any shower facilities with us. So that's a option. It's called gray water for other uses than drinking. Just a thought! Thanks!

I stay in my car as a travel nurse and luckily most of the time I stay at truck stops but I work nights so I feel safe sleeping in the day but nurses usually get free showers at pilot and loves. I’ve also had truck drivers pay for my shower with their point cards. I love truckers. They’ve always been very nice to me.

Use a camping drybag & S-Hook to keep your valuables with you in the shower

"Sailor's shower". My version. One gallon jug of water. If in public put on swimsuit. Wet your head. Shampoo your hair. Use soapy lather for your body too. If wearing something cause you are in public just reach inside with soapy hand. Grab your water and rinse by pouring on your head. It runs down and rinses your body. If you have a lot of hair it may take more than one gallon. You can literally do this pretty much anywhere.

I am a truck driver and yes thats a crazy price but we get them for free with fuel. A tip if you ever feel like it if you ask a trucker that’s getting a shower if you can have their team shower most of them I’m sure will be glad to offer it. They are free for us.

When you talked about hanging the backpack on the outside of the public shower, I think there is a way to have your backpack inside of the shower with you just to ensure that nobody steals it while you’re bathing… You can order a dry bag which is a waterproof bag that actually works and keeps your electronics dry. That way you can keep your valuables inside of the shower with you without fear of anything getting water damage. I have a video of the dry bag on my channel, I use the large bag at water parks and the beach.

You can get a rewards card for Loves, Pilot, T/A Petro. Now when you get gas you get points that you can use for showers and merchandise. Better than the gym, plus they are cleaned after each use

There's also the cheap 12 volt camp shower ! and its amazing how good a kettle of boiling water into a plastic bucket of tap water will be. For the shy you can get a fold out camping shower enclosure . As long as you are out on the open road in a parking bay.

My wife and I travel together. At truck stops we can both get a shower and $15 is a little high as a rule; $12-$13 is common. We both go in the shower and take about 45min. Towels and soap are in there already, and after each person/party showers someone cleans before the next person showers. Some of the facilities are newer than others, but it's always a treat to get a shower when you're traveling for weeks at a time.

Ingredients: One quart of very warm water, soap, six (or so) washrags, one towel, privacy. Directions: Put all six washrags in the warm water. Take one out, soap it up, and wash yourself. Set washrag aside. Take second washrag out. Soap it up. Finish washing yourself. Set the washrag aside. Take the third washrag out. Rinse yourself. Set the third washrag aside. Take the fourth washrag out. Rinse yourself. Set the fourth washrag aside. Take the fifth washrag out. Finish rinsing yourself. Set the fifth washrag aside. Use sixth washrag if you need to. Towel off and get dressed. To wash hair: One quart of very warm water. Pour warm water on your head. Squish the water through your hair with a clean washrag. Add shampoo to your hair and wash your hair. Strip out as much shampoo as you can from your hair using your hands. Pour warm water on your hair. Scrunch and strip again. Repeat until hair is thoroughly rinsed; use washrag to scrunch clean water through your hair as a last step if necessary. Wrap hair with a towel. With a little practice you'll be able to wash yourself and be totally clean with three washrags and a McDonald's large drink cup of warm water, and wash your hair and it be thoroughly clean in a quart or so of water. Just thought I'd share my experience.

I get very sleepy. SO...when I had his van, I would pull into one of those all-night gas station mini marts and sleep for awhile when I went out of town for whatever. What fun it was to have this sort of little house. I hope your travels continue to work well for you. Be happy.

For a cooking hack, use convenience store microwaves. You will be done before the clerk knows you started.

Truck drivers get free shower with fuel purchases. Back when drove truck they would give you a shower ticket for every 50 gallons you bought. If they still use shower tickets sometimes drivers give them away.

A great shower tip I learned recently from another RU-vidr was to use dog potty pads as your bathmat. If you have a dressing area just outside the shower stall you can lay down the potty pad as your bathmat and then toss it when you’re done. No standing on any gross fungus, sand, dirt, who knows what. I still wear shower shoes but having the pad allows you to kick them off and get dressed.

Yes I am a Lurker, but I got one advice for you. Change your car. Do not sleep uncomfortably on the back seat. Get a van, or anything where you can strech out complitely. Because if not, one day you might feel one hell of a back pain. It nearly brought me to tears ones, when I couldn't stand up straight or move. P. S. Great ideas. If you join your local YMCA, the annual is much cheaper, and (in most) you have a pool and sauna. The "Away" plan is included in membership and applies around the country at almost all Ys.

I use truck stops. The last Pilot Stn I stopped at they said $15.00! OMGosh!! A driver handed her (cashier) his Pilot card and I was able to get a free shower! Truckers do have to pay. They buy like a 1000 gal of gas and get a free shower. Just a perk of using their gas. Between showers, I use Assurance Bath wipes. They are great. Largest ones I've used.

The massage chair in most PF clubs is almost worth the $23

There are other options too: 1. if you have a state park pass you can get into the parks for free and use their restrooms/showers while you are there enjoying the park. 2. Same with National Park passes. 3. Cities with big school districts and sports stadiums usually have an indoor pool that is open to the public and you can shower there too. you just have to pay the daily swim fee which is about 4-$10 depending where you are. If I can think of any others i will come back and comment again!!

Since COVID I sneak at work I work graves, on west coast Safeway's usually had private bathroom for hooker showers, now my gym open illegally go there after staff goes home. In Seattle area truck stop $15 way way too much. I probably know sadly every single bathroom in a 20 mile radius lol. I miss 24 hour fitness my hot tub. Lastly the year around campgrounds you park there don't take forever they never check. The public showers in Seattle time you, which sucks. I mostly go to my illegally open gym and work.

In the Marine Corps we called it "Field Showers" you would pay $50 for some wipes after a week or two in the field.

Those towels work great for condensation on windows too

As I look out my window as I type this at the purple neon and yellow sign - Planet fitness is my go to for showering, as well as parking / sleeping. I am in NorCal and there are quite a few - I am fortunate that my “ home” gym is truly a 24//7 club as many are not. My daughter and son-in-law live in Palm Springs so I think the one in Palm Springs/Cathedral city is also 24 / 7 as well- and absolutely a must with the shower shoes /flip flops -I usually go to dollar tree and pick up several pair. Also I carry Wet Wipes and alcohol wipes or just a bottle of alcohol and paper towels for sanitizing everything! Planet Fitness is by far the best option for road warrior/ adventurers. Anyway, I always have a peaceful uninterrupted nights sleep I feel safe and it’s usually super quiet. Also within the same complex there is a Nugget Market one of my fav Cali grocery markets with a great coffee bar- they pour / feature Equator Coffee - and they have really good prepared foods/nice selection of organic products etc. and are open 7 days a week from 6 am - 10 pm. New to your channel but going on 3 years intermittently car camping/ living happily/ successfully and so far safely. With the exception of 8 months full time in a Southern state on the East Coast to save money and for the much needed solitude, I have been in Northern California but in the past year during Covid , I have pretty much have been staying in Hyatt hotels - as a globalist level their rewards / points program is amazing and the perks with super late check outs, upgrades, free nights are amazing! But I love hotels and always have as I traveled extensively with my former Pharma sales job. This year, I’ve been everywhere in California between San Francisco and Palm Springs when I go visit my daughter. and the stops along way have been absolutely amazing!! Recently, I spent a weekend in Carmel and Big Sur at a Hyatt for a free night award.- what’s not to love about Big Sur! With the exception of the heat waves which I’m not used to having lived in south Marin County for 2 years ( spoiled for sure to perfect temps ) car life in Cali is very much doable :) it’s hard to imagine not doing this even intermittently - I have officially decided to forever be Huck Fintress and just go and see everything / everywhere. I guess I knew when I drove 2000+ miles solo and took my time on my healing journey / adventure back to California from the East Coast that this was just pretty super dope way to live. Showers are super important on the road. Just do surfer showers. Surfers where I'm from keep one gallon plastic jugs of tap water for showering. One to get your body wet and shaped up with non moisturizing body wash soap or dawn dish soap. And two jugs to rinse. It gets you squeaky clean and smelling and feeling super good. Then change out your clothes to clean ones at night. It's way easier to sleep cool and comfortable. Baby wipes are a waste of resources, are inefficient at cleaning a sweaty greasy body and hair, and are bad for the environment. But gallon jugs are easy to fill, deal with, and stash. It's best to have a plan for every step, a half a day in advance, so that you aren't driving around searching, aimlessly and all stressed out. Be ahead of where you are going to do and get whatever. Go to water refill stations for drinking water and public facilities for tap water. If your shower water is cold. Do it anyway. It's super good for your health and it really builds character and makes you sleep better.

I am in Canada, but at my local YMCA, non-members can buy a day pass ($10) which gives you access to all the facilities. I am not a member but go now and then to use the pool. You can of course have a shower. If you are 65 or older it is half price.

Wipes are great, but take them to the next level by applying tea tree oil to them first. I use about 10 drops or so. It will change your world.

Homeless shelters, Church buildings, I might get a 27x27 portable tub. A hose to drain it, and a 12 v heating element to heat the water. I have a van.

I travel for months here in Africa exploring various countries. And here's my strategy for showering that's free and solid; I created a sort of pipes that I slide on my car roof rack on the side of the car where I attached a cloth curtains that end up creating a few square feet of privacy area. During the day I simply park on roadside preferably on highway, I put up the curtains and I wash myself clean using a jerrycan or water bottles. It's a real shower I enjoy everyday. Nobody ever cares, it's day and it's a roadside jungle or highway and I'm cleaning up.... Perhaps if I was in USA I would buy those collapsible tent shower pods I see on camping gear which I would setup on highway side next to my car, I shower properly using a basin or jerrycan or water bottles and I pack it back into the car.... That way I would always guarantee myself a perfect bath daily.... I love your videos a lot, job well done my big sister

I took out my passenger front seat and built a platform to level out to the floor in that spot. I bought a puppy pool, that folds like an accordion, off Amazon. I lay down a towel then position the puppy pool on the platform. I have window covers for all of my car windows for privacy. I use a gallon of water that I warm up in my dashboard all day. If the water didn't get warm enough, I'll get a large cup of hot water from a gas station, dump some of the gallon, and add the boiling hot water to the gallon of room temp water. I sit in the pool and use a separate cup to pour the water into so I'm not wasting water as I soak down & rinse off. I also use biodegradable soap so I can dump my pool almost anywhere(I open both doors and dump it while no one is looking). Turkish towels dry really fast(I'll hang mine overnight on the driver's seat since I sleep in the back of the car. I also use a wash cloth that is Terri cloth on one side and mesh on the other so it gets a good lather, dries fast, and takes up less storage space. I also make sure I use a towel to dry my pool and then use a Clorox wipe to sanitize/clean it; this way no mold or bacteria grows.

Only diesel trucks get showers with 50 gal. Fuel However sometimes you can ask one when they are there if. They have an extra shower. I used to give them away as I was home the next day. Planet fitness is your best best. Also dry your feet with a hair dryer, fungus cannot live in dry heat and spray between your toes when dry, shower shoes don't keep the water from the shower floor from coming up over shower shoes

When you hit 65 get Humana instead of Medicare, and you can get on Silver Sneakers, which entitles you to free gym memberships and free showers! I'm 66 and just got a free membership at Planet Fitness membership! I wore my funny goofy smile mask which I bought on Zazzle, and they actually TOOK my picture in it!!! Lol. And yes, wear rubber sandals into the shower! Back in the early 80's I got mosaic plantar warts on both feet from a YMCA shower. They hurt for 30 years till they finally went away following ultrasound treatments.

During the summer time you can sneak in any campsites and try to blend in with those ppl who is camping at those campgrounds and use their bathrooms

Yes we do pay 14 or 15, they are free with fuel but we dont always get to stop for the day where we get fuel soooooooo. Sometimes we pay and we cant normally park at gyms or basically anywhere without getting the KNOCK. such is life it sucks. Just a tip a water bottle add a few drops of body wash and whatever you like then heavy paper towels or paper shop towels works better than or = to baby wipes. I use antibacterial soap, baby oil and wash hair with shampoo and another bottle of clean water (wish mine was drier)

I live in Washington state, the closest gym to me is Anytime fitness and their monthly charge is $44. I was with them for one year and didn't renew my membership for a variety of reasons. Planet Fitness has twice the facilities of Anytime Fitness so the membership sounds very reasonable if you feel you need to do that. Growing up I was allowed only one shower or bath a week - there were six of us - so I learned early the value of sponge/spot baths which a lot of full time nomads do.

When car camping I often use beach showers if I can find any in an enclosed change area . The showers are cold, but I cope with that by switching on the tap, get wet, switch off the tap, soap and scrub myself and then get back under the water for the final rinse. By that time the cold water isn't such a rude shock. I use a microfiber cloth about the size of a man's hanky. It is very effective for drying if you squeeze the water out as it gets wet, and keeps clean as I rinse it well after. It dries quickly on the dashboard of my car.

*Get showers whenever when you can* 🙏

When we traveled we would clean up in the rest stop bathroom or at a gas station. You can go in a stall with a little bucket and a wash cloth & towel and get clean. Also if they have the air blower dryers you can wash your hair in the sink and blow it dry. If not towel and air dry while driving if it’s in warm weather. I have never had anyone get offended when I did this. I used to travel with an old coffee percolator with the insides removed. Fill it with a dozen eggs and water and run it through a cycle in the rest area. When it’s done you have hard boiled eggs. It’s also good as a hot pot for instant soup or oatmeal.

Don't do babywipes. That's a disaster, waste wise, and expensive too. Maintain some washclothes with your laundry. You can carry around in ziploc bags or small plastic food boxes. You can wash and rinse them in any sink. carry a little bottle of liquid soap (Dr. Bronners is recommended - it's pretty environmentally friendly, and can be used for everything - hair, body, dishes). Real cotton washclothes are worth it.

Before using a public shower I would spray the floor with Lysol or some other spray to kill germs. And still wear the flip flops.

As a van expediter, I have a Pilot/FlyinJ card. If I get 14 gallons of gas I get a half shower credit. So 2 fillups gives me a free shower. Driving a van, it's easy to use 2 tanks of gas in one day. I usually end up with extra shower credits.

you can get a free shower at any truckstop. Most give free showers to truckers for filling up 50 gallons of fuel. Most have a rewards card that after 1000 gallons a month the showers for the next month is free.
