how I thrive when life is too much - overcoming crippling anxiety one day at a time (a gentle story)
I am still working on managing anxiety that started at a very young age due to series of challenging events, but I have greatly improved since finding myself at a particular low point where I was not able to follow my normal daily routines, and felt like my world was getting smaller and smaller. Sometimes I would not be able to stop shaking for hours, and it was exhausting and scary. I started to despair, and I mean that is the fullest sense of the word. That is not a safe place to be, and I wish I had taken preventative measures and sought support far before I needed to. I now, slowly but steadily, have continued to flourish despite this - and while I could not possibly incorporate all the detailed methods I use in one short video, I hope this can simply be encouragement - not advice - on your own journey.
Here are several resources or practices that I found extremely helpful:
- Firstly, that spending time in the company of your own thoughts can be upsetting at first, especially when we are afraid or avoidant, but over time - this quiet place can transform into a haven. At least, it did for me, and perhaps it is worth trying to spend a little time each day in this way and see if it helps.
- my favorite talk on anxiety • How to stop feeling an...
- accepting that we all have limitations on our time. I myself am often consumed with work and family. What ‘slowing down’ means is different for everyone. It’s all about working within our limitations ❤

- The Highly Sensitive Person: amzn.to/3Wd5lUA
- Being Peace by Thich Nhat Han (even if you don’t share the writers religion, I think it can still be extremely beneficial to read his mindfulness advice): amzn.to/3w5EzD4
- Journaling each day/art therapy if you are so inclined
- Researching how the brain is able to re-build and re-wire itself, realizing that anxiety can be managed and brought back to appropriate levels through patience and consistency. You can do things to help, and you are not without power.
- Acceptance that any healing journey will take an unknown amount of time, and you cannot rush this process.
- of course, seeking medical support and therapy if you are able!
- Building a spiritual practice, or at least a relaxation routine if you are not a spiritual person.
- Remembering that news outlets and social media work on an algorithm that is designed to respond to audience interaction, this explains why highly controversial and upsetting content often is at the forefront, when more positive and/or less bias news can easily go unnoticed. I find it very important to balance difficult information with hopeful and positive coverage of amazing things happening in our world. It takes a bit of extra research to find this information, but so beneficial to me. Simply look up positive news stories on the environment, community projects, etc.
- lastly, I cannot stress enough how important it is to tackle unhealthy levels of anxiety ASAP. Take it from someone who ignored it for years and made constant excuses to avoid it. It will not go away, and it can greatly damage your health until you begin to treat it. At least, it did for me and this video is my attempt to help others be pro-active and practice self-care before crisis 🙏

The best thing I did for myself as a young person was to get rid of the tv. My first time living alone was in the late 1980s so there was no internet. I had a radio for weather reports and daily news updates, and a stereo system for music. Most of the day there was no noise. The ability to enjoy the silence was more healing than I could have imagined.

I grew up without a tv and have never had one. I’ve never quite understood how people could bear the artificiality and banality of all that noise. I’ve found that the internet can become just as stressful if not limited, but this channel is lovely, and always moves me back to a more peaceful place.🦋

i think since you are a woman, there is a higher chance of anxiety gripping you. there is a psychological aspect to this: women are aware of being the physically weaker sex and often times this causes significant distress in a world which has been torn apart from a community point of view. something which i have seen help other women around me is to join or be part of a community where there is no expectations but to simply be - often in the past it would be when women would go together to pick flowers or wash in the river. hope that alleviates some of the pain.

I have not been out in the world since January 2020. Due to things happening in my life, my world has become smaller and smaller. I live in an isolated place, in rural Devon, but I love that. I sold my car, because I could not go out in it. So I order everything on line. I am so lucky to have my rescue greyhound dog Madge, as she is the only reason I go out, to walk her. There can be many days when I do not speak to another human being, but I do not mind this. It is lovely though to chat to someone, if I meet them walking Madge. I love watching your calm videos, and even though you are so young, and I am 66 years young, I can understand everything you are saying, and you are an angel, with a heart of gold. Such a beautiful young woman too. I live each day as it comes, and do not know how I can start to get out in the world again? Maybe I do not want to, or need to. I am a pottery painter, and love all arts and crafts, but have not felt like doing any of it lately. Maybe I shall feel better, and start slowly doing something arty crafty. Just have to take each day as it comes. I am so thankful for what I have though. Love and Blessings to you from Devon, England. xxx

Right, but also good to observe they are all in their head so much...try to get out of self...volunteer, help others, work at a food shelf, help children who are starving, talk to lonely, be a friend to a person in a home for abused women, or search volunteer jobs in newspaper. Way too many on here think of self only which can be debilitating. Opening doors to help others helps ONESELF.

@@starryvonne1188 That's true, to some extent. I can only speak for myself but being out in the world and doing things that are considered meaningful doesn't always do the trick. Some of us are still alienated by the world, no matter how much they are involved, and a retreat, if only for a while, is the only way to deal with it. I cried watching this. One, because I have debilitating anxiety . I had a very toxic job that I finally quit in September and I’ve felt lost and scared ever since. I just want a job that isn’t too stressful that can support me. I’m terrified of change and I judge myself a lot. My bedroom is where I feel the most safe. And two, you seem so full of peace, it’s hard to believe that you struggle with anxiety too. Like you, I have chronic anxiety. I experienced a lot of childhood trauma and I have complex PTSD (I've done a lot of healing, but I don't think it ever completely goes away). Like you, I find that allowing ourselves to be bored is VERY healing. Our anxiety wants us to be doing things all the time so that we are not confronted with our feelings, but the truth is, that only creats more anxiety. It's like sweeping the dirt under the rag-you may pretend it's not there but it is! Allowing yourself to be bored, by simply BEING and not doing anything for a few minutes, is so healing. And I find that, in the end, this contemplative practice is the opposite of boring. It brings so much joy. Journaling, Nature and spirituality help a lot, too. 💚 By the way, you're living my dream life. One day I will also live in a cottage in the countryside. 🥰🍀

This video felt like a gentle hand on the shoulder. We’re not wrong for how we feel; the anxious may find a way to live that is artful, beautiful, and thriving. All of us have to be as we truly are. If we love and aspire to something, we may reach it, in our own way. Little acts of bravery are no less brave than great ones.

I first encountered anxiety in the 5th grade when we moved to a small town where, being an Army brat, I was an outsider. How I dreaded waking up on a school morning, facing another day of taunts & rejection. Only the Mexican girls accepted me because they faced the same disrespect & understood. Throughout my school years I was confident academically but socially immature. I found solace in nature & my pets & a few friends who lived on the fringe like I did. I fully understand your need to retreat into the woods and fields. No need to ask for forgiveness or acceptance from a world where diversity lives in harmony.

I have recently started keeping a journal and have been surprised at my ability to keep up with it. I have tried keeping a journal before but I think the problem was that I unconsciously told myself that I had to write out my deepest most meaningful thoughts, that just writing about my day wasn't "important" enough to write down. But now I'm finding that writing down something as simple as "Took a walk---beautiful weather" can lead to a natural, instead of forced, reflection on myself and my life. I want to write more after that because I don't feel like I have to. That way I can take it day by day instead of analyzing my entire life decisions up to that point! Don't know if anyone has the same struggle, but there's my two cents because it really does help to write things down. ❤

I think anxiety is a consequence of being a highly sensitive empath in a chaotic world that is full of anger, tension, busyness, and fear. Thank you for your words of encouragement this morning! This is the hardest season of all for me. After all of the stress, sugars and salt are put away until next year (along with the unrealistic expectations), I find myself pretty low and emotionally exhausted. Then, I will pile on OWN "woulda, shoulda, coulda" items, too! The long days of winter are especially hard (and cold) for me in the inland northwest. My creativity is a double-edged sword. It helps to sharpen my creativity, and curiosity. And yet, it can take me down a deep "rabbit hole" that seems suffocating at times. By fighting back, I exhaust myself and just keep perpetuating THAT cycle. So, I have designated the month of January the "take care of ME" month. I burn candles, read a book, use lotions and creams to help soothe dry, winter hands and eat citrus that I call "little balls of golden sunshine". I just LOVE the little terrarium you made. It helps to add not only some whimsy, but also creates its own little habitat.

I really relate to the phrase "life is too much." having been diagnosed with DID two years ago, and having lived with it most of my life - I constantly feel overwhelmed by my own mind. I feel lost and without tools to make my life what it should be. I never have enough income, being severely mentally and physically disabled. I finally accepted that I need help, and I am going to be hospitalized for my mental illness in a week or so. After that I will begin the process of applying for low income housing, and getting a lawyer so I can get disability payment. I've tried being "independent." but my life is more valuable than a vague capitalistic sense of productivity. Sometimes you can't help yourself. Sometimes you need to take the assistance you can get from numerous programs and nonprofits in existence which are designed to help you.

Thank you Paola, your videos are just so breathtakingly beautiful. Your home is such a peaceful, beautiful reflection of you. I live in the city now but my house has a huge park adjoining my backyard with an open Gothic looking retaining wall and wrought-iron fence, it's beautiful. Everyday and evening a multitude of different birds come to my garden to feed on wild bird seed. Ducks of various breeds; doves; bronzewing pigeons; ibis; corellas; galahs; willy wagtails and crows. It is my absolute favourite thing each day. My little chihauhau has grown used to them all and them of her, so cute to watch her wander through them and most totally ignore her 😍 She is such a good girl and very quiet like myself. I never struggled with anxiety until this past August. I developed tinnitus and all my normal coping strategies were lost- seeking quiet, rest, nature… I now experienced all these no longer as silence and peace, but environments that made the noise in my ears all the more noticeable. It was an intense 3 months of crippling anxiety. I’ve since gotten more used to the noise being there, and other background noises I’ve started playing and getting used to. The anxiety is better, but I still so desperately miss the silence in my own head. Gardening was a big help!

I write poetry as well to help express how I'm feeling. I sometimes can't verbally let my feelings out, but use poetry as a means of letting what's within me escape out into the world by writing it down on paper. It's cathartic, and allows me to let go of whatever may be stuck inside. I'm sure none of the poetry you write is horrendous. Everything you create reflects your warmth, serenity, and depth of feeling. I so appreciate your channel and art.

So many things touched me in this video. First, your poetry is wonderful! As a writer of poetry for many years, I learned that there really isn't a way to judge what is good or bad in a poem. That judgement is reserved for the poet alone. The reader/listener is going to get something else when they read because they are looking at your words with a completely different life experience. We can hope our message comes across, but that message has a habit of changing on its journey. Like a painting, the words come from different brushes and strokes. I've accepted that whenever I've shared which makes it much easier to let the words go. My daughter (who follows you) is an OT and has been developing programs to help her clients deal with sensory and anxiety issues. Much of what she is doing is tied closely with using nature as a grounding point for healing and growth. As I watched this, there were many things that reminded me that you have similar thought processes. Thank you for that! Have a wonderful week!!

While being deliberate and slowing things down can help to relieve anxiousness, God Himself says in First Peter 5:7 that we are to cast all of our cares on Him, because He cares for us.
