I love that idea! We do sticker charts for a similar effect.

great idea about having them do it on Saturday...what a motivation!!!! My boys are 12 and 14, and this would work!!! (No one likes to do homework on SATURDAY!!) Genius... then, how about rewards if they do it regularly without hassle!!??? After a certain amount of weeks or so?

+Karin Dunham I think in their mind, not having to do school on a Saturday is reward enough, lol. I hadn't thought too much about a reward...maybe having a popcorn and movie night, or dropping school for the day to watch science documentaries. I think I'll pitch that one to the kids and see what they think. ;)

I am old fashioned too, nothing like pen and notebook.

+Karin Dunham My kids and husband tease me - but I just think better with pen and paper than I do typing on the computer. It's just how I'm wired, I guess.

I can't believe I missed this video back in November (I'm pretty sure I was subscribed to you then). Did you say you have a lesson plan you refer to? Our lesson plan is sort of 'checklist' style, too. There are no times or schedule (though we do aim to do our work in the morning-ish). When a task is completed, we highlight it. I feel that's a very flexible approach lessons because if you miss something, you can still get to it, maybe not in that day, but eventually. I also didn't start this kind of 'lesson planning' till about 5th grade as well. Same consequences here :) -Hana

+Pepper and Pine Yes, I write my own lesson plans (and sell them - you can check that out if you want at buildyourlibrary.com). I the checklists work so well because it's simple. They can see everything they need to do each day and just check it off as they go. Easy peasy.

Great video! Thanks for sharing. I type a lesson plan for my 6th grader but I may implement this checklist method with my younger kiddos. Great idea. I just came across your channel, could you tell me about the time line behind you in the video? We keep a time line in a binder and I'm not loving it. I've looking for something different. Thanks again.

+stlilymov4 Thanks! I will have to do a video about the timeline. I've done different things over the years, we had a timeline made from a trifold display board for many years, and my teens all have binder timelines, but I wanted something a bit more visual for my 6 year old. You can see there isn't much on it yet - we've only been using it since the beginning of this school year, but I really like how it looks. We made it from 2 old bulletin boards and "antique" looking maps.

Hi Emily. Can I ask you, how much reading do your teens do independently and how much do you do with them (reading aloud)? Trying to find a happy medium for my 15 year old....!

Do you provide recommendations for other subjects (like spelling) not covered in your curriculum? We are going to be using BYL 7th grade starting in August. I noticed here that you have added Big History and Crash Course videos. I looked but didn't see a video on your channel about what you use, maybe I missed it?

I'll probably film something like that later this summer when I'm finished planning what our school year will look like next year. This year was kind of all over the place between adjusting to the twins going to school for a couple of classes and growing my business. But yes, I do tend to throw in lots of youtube videos, documentaries, extra fun things I come across (like Big History) that I think might appeal to my kids.
