This activity can come in handy if you have a preschooler or school-age child who could benefit from learning how to express their thoughts/ideas clearly. A majority of children find it difficult to express themselves succinctly. This skill is particularly difficult for children who have delayed speech/language skills as well as late-talkers. Therefore, any activity that targets sentence expansion can be helpful in providing your child with extra practise opportunities!
Kids Charades is a tabletop game, which should also help target other crucial social skills such as rules to a game, turn-taking skills and how to behave when one loses, although this particular game doesn’t necessarily target the latter.
I use Kids Charades to target;
- Describing skills
- Vocabulary building
There is a structure to how one can describe a noun (item) in an orderly manner. I reinforce starting by 1) identifying the overall group name the item belongs to, then 2) talking about what it is used for (function) and 3) what it looks like. For items that have a location, this can form one of the descriptions. I always target whatever vocabulary comes up during the activity.
For very young children or late-talkers, I may use coloured counters to demonstrate each feature to the description, and to also help the child keep track of how many things they have said.
In this game, we take turns spinning the wheel and picking up the corresponding card, then whoever picks up a car gets to describe using at least 3 features, and the other player has to “guess” what was described.
There can be as many iterations to the game as your creativity can allow!
Have fun playing it, and remember that there are wonderful teaching moments that present themselves during the activity, so don’t be too caught up in the game not to recognise them!
