Band in a Box 2021 - How I use "UTILITY TRACKS" in BIAB 2021. This tutorial describes how I use the UTILITY TRACK function in BIAB 2021 demonstrating my exact technique using real screens and a real song that I developed. For tutorial purposes and not to have the tutorial too long I only demonstrate using Real Tracks and not MIDI and I do not do Wave editing within the audio wizard. Also even though you can record vocals on utility tracks I do not use that function because I choose to sing directly into my DAW. Hopefully through this video you will gain a practical understanding of how to use the utility tracks and have an additional tool you can use in your musical compositions. If you like my tutorials and techniques please subscribe to my channel. I have other "How To" videos which my help you. BIAB is a very powerful product but it has a lot of nuances and I understand that navigating can be challenging at times. Also no single tutorial can cover everything. I hope you enjoy this video and you can hear the full song "NOT ENOUGH" on my You Tube channel or on Soundcloud.
You can hear all of my releases on Spotify: open.spotify.com/artist/5VT6U...

This was really helpful, Henry. It was driving me nuts because I couldn't figure out how to add a track to only PART of my song. And what you said is: render it across the whole song & then cut it once I have it in the other mixing software. Cool! Thanks, Henry!!!

I am a long time Band in a Box user. Each new yearly update has a few challenges. The way I learn any daw. I just start trying to use it. I just have to try moving or making something. I have to keep referencing back to the tutorials, often. Like a mouse in a box with walls and a one door. I hit several walls until I find the door. When I I hit a wall, I learn something. I suggest to your viewers. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. You ain't gonna hurt anything. Start over and work it out. Eventually the mouse finds the door. Not calling you mice.. euphemism.

I’m a longtime user of Mixcraft and very happy with it. But lots of times, I just need to create backing tracks to jam to when I’m busking. I’ve been aware of BIB for a long time. I just tried getting ja lab and wow…what a pain in the rear to setup. Even at ‘Free’ I gave up. BIB obviously has come a long way. Just got it yesterday and already created two simple tunes, but I want to delve deeper. And I found you. You’re a very good speaker and feel I will get lots from your videos.

@@henryclarke5407 Genres? I am all over the map. From surf music to jazz and anything in between. My “genre” interest is vast. I just did what your tutorial taught. I exported all instruments as wave files except for the drums. I kept that as a midi file. Once everything is in Mixcraft, I use EZDrummer or SuperiorDrummer for the drums. I can tell it’s possible to go deep in BIB….and I plan to. I’ll be viewing your other tutorials soon! Thanks again!

@@henryclarke5407 thanks for replying Henry I appreciate your generosity! My consideration here is that I want all the original bit depth from any RealTracks to come into my DAW (if I don’t bring it in via the VST version). If I turn anything down in BiaB itself that might change that bit depth on that track. That’s my thinking anyway. Of course it could all be getting resampled by Élastique so I suppose I’ll have to ask them. Thanks again for your workflow tips really love finding your channel!
@henryclarke5407
@henryclarke5407 3 года назад
@@gen-amb I don't think the volume affects the bit depth but what I have found interesting is that as we like to mix in 32 bit when I distribute through (Tunecore) and get placed on iTunes, Amazon, Pandora, and Spotify there is a solid requirement that only 16bit will be accepted by the streaming sites. I think all the streaming sites compress the audio anyway so I think (guessing here) is that they just want a clean mix.

I usually make use of Bar Settings in BIAB and mute out different tracks where I don't want them and bring back where appropriate in the mixing. Hi Mr. Rosales. First of all I'm always hesitant in telling people how to spend their money :-) I do find that if you're going to spend the time with BIAB I always recommend Ultra Pak. However that's just a tuff question to answer if I don't know what your goals are. As far as genres go with a little experimentation you can make almost any genre work. Just need to understand what you're tying to accomplish. As far as "extra" purchases I concentrate on vocals so I have a very good DAW (Cakewalk Sonar which is free today under Bandlab) but I also have quite a few plug-ins for mixing (Antares Vocal Pack, iZotope Nectar, CLA vocal processing by Waves, etc...) and a host other plug-ins I accumulated over the years. I also have a Focusrrite USB interface which I find essential for singing or playing anything directly into a computer. The interface is a godsend when it comes to reducing latency and I also have a few pretty good microphones. Hope this helps.

Mr. Clarke... I just watched your BIAB Utility Tracks video, and while I learned several important aspects of using utility tracks, I got confused when you were showing how you "brought in the guitar solo" at a point in the song, and added the piano track at a certain point in the song. Where I'm confused is, when you generate the utiltity tracks, don't they follow the BIAB chords for the whole song? So when you export them to the DAW and start the track at other than the start of the song, how does it sync up to start at the point in the song other than the beginning?? I probably missed something, but if you could point me to where I can find out how to do what you did would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! I use BIAB 2021 and Bandlab Cakewalk as my DAW.
@henryclarke5407
@henryclarke5407 3 года назад
Hi Chuck. If I understand your question correctly yes the utility tracks do generate for the entire song. To get them to sync up in your DAW it's "ESSENTIAL" that you have the "exact" BPMs set in our DAW. So if you created the song at 95 BPMs make sure that you DAW tempo is set to 95 BPMs. If you have a difference in your BPMs they will not sync. I know that in Cakewalk Sonar the standard BPM for a new song is 120. You must change that in order to sync. I actually discussed this in my video "DAW Integration". I didn't think about adding it in this one. I'm really trying to shorten the video yet keep the content. It's quite a challenge. Hope I answered your question. Henry
@chuckczerny8176
@chuckczerny8176 3 года назад
@@henryclarke5407 Thank you for the prompt response! So if I understand you correctly, after aligning the tempo in the DAW to be exactly what BIAB used, then the Utility track starts at the beginning of the song but you mute it until you get to the bar you want to include it, say Bar 100 in the DAW. Then you unmute the track and the BIAB Utility track is at the exact same place where it would have been if you played the track from the beginning, but then you "add-in" (un-mute) the piano at Bar 100 on that track into your overall song and it plays exactly where it would have been had you played the track from the beginning. Neat!! Do you use Track Mute to silence the parts you don't want to hear or do you use another technique?? Again thank you for helping me get through the "start-up" curve on using BIAB to it's fullest! WOW! I watched the music video of the "Walk On By" song. @henryclarke5407

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. If you select a realtrack to generate you type the kind of instrument you want to use in the filter string. It should show the types of instruments that fit the style you are using. You can also select instruments that are not necessarily compatible with the style. However at times I use them anyway depending on the sound. One thing is that you must have the utility track sets as part of your BIAB set. I'm not sure what version of BIAB you have but if you just have the basic set you may not have a lot of realtracks or you may have not loaded them into the program where BIAB can search for them. That's the only thing I can guess based on what you wrote.

Lot's of questions here. 1) All instruments in this video are "RealTracks". Not MIDI or VSTs. 2) Of course when you import MIDI tracks into Cakewalk they will not play an instrument until you assign one to the track. MIDI tracks are data and not musical. Thus you will have to assign the MIDI track to some sort of sound module. 3: I have not experimented with this because if I want to use MIDI tracks I will record and assign them directly into Cakewalk. so I don't have the need to do that. 4) For vocals I use most of the standard plug-ins that come with my Sonar Producer version such as reverb, compression, delay, etc.. I also have iZotope Nectar for some of the vocal processing and I use Autotune Live if I want a different effect on my voice. There are probably others I use but it's all dependent on the type of song I'm singing and what I'm after for effects. As far as my songs sounding professional .. hahahahahha .. I would hope that's what they are since they are distributed across all major platforms and generate royalties :-)
