Band in a Box. Why I Prefer Band-in-a-Box UltraPAK". In this video I explain why I think UltraPAK is a better purchasing strategy for BIAB users than the cheaper versions due to the amount of add-ons that are available. I explain in depth the major differences between the product sets and how selecting the right set will save you money and provide a higher level of satisfaction when using the product.

Thank you Henry for sharing your experience. I have BIAB 2018 and have used it occasionally making Jazz practice tracks. I recently retired and have been using BIAB to create power pop songs and the midi sounds are just killing the vibe - I need RealTracks. This video made it perfectly clear what I need to match what I'm hearing in my head. Thank you and I look forward learning much more from you.

Hi Henry, Full disclosure, I am one of those people who regret not upgrading to UltraPak sooner. I thought I would be happy with some simple backing tracks to practice with but sooner rather than later I wanted to experiment with something different and I got tired of clicking on a style and getting all those asterix in the instument parts, and all I could hear was the drums. I have been waiting for an opportunity to thank you for all your excellent videos and your encouragement to dig a little deeper into BIAB. Your technical instructions are clear but what I really think is special is how you communicate the joy of creativity. Thanks.

After I create a song and render it to MP3. I always go back to the same EXACT song, change the style and hear my original song as if it was performed by a cover band. So i can hear my song as if it were played by a R+B, country, hip hop, and virtually any style Band. I have gotten some really interesting results. Altho I usually write Rock Songs, Some of them sound even better as a Country or R+b Song. Nice to have a song that appeals to a different audience.

Yes. I agree totally. I've done a lot of that myself. Probably more so with covers to see if I can do them differently but just enough that a listener will remember the song.

You tell, em, Henry. If you can't afford at least ultra pack, then save up until you can. If you're brand new and just want to check it out, you can get your money back before 30 days. No excuses, no reasonable other option.

This is a year later, I purchased BAIB Pro 2023 in August. I wanted to make sure I could figure it out, so I went as cheap as possible. Well...within a couple of weeks, I had purchased a 5-set add-on ($149) and also the 2023 49Pak ($49). Now, later in September, I've made an entire song, figured out a LOT of BAIB (thanks to you, Henry, and other tutorials)...and tonight I'm upgrading to Ultra. LOL. They are going to refund the $49, which would be duplicated items. Apparently, the add-on I did I would have had to pay extra for anyway, so I'm good with that. I can not WAIT to install the Ultra upgrade and start exploring all of the real tracks and all the other stuff you get. I really, really love BAIB. Thanks, Henry!

This video made me think. I hadn't contemplated Ultrapack before. I didn't even realise I could upgrade from Pro to UltraPAK for a relatively small amount extra over just upgrading the basic pro package ($90 while the offer lasts). But now I think that's what I'll do. The realtracks are so much better than the midis (unless you intend to spend literally hours in your DAW assigning new samples and manipulating velocity etc.) that it's well worth the small extra investment for a big uplift in quality.

I've done the DAW route. Assigning multiple VSTs for MIDI tracks for me is a last resort thought I do a lot of soul string arrangements through a M-Audio with a string vst.

Henry, very clear and descriptive video as usual. I also must add that I like your production qualities of your videos. My only suggestion for you would be that as someone with a video production background, I think it would up your game a notch to invest in a lapel type microphone to increase the audio quality of your video. Yes, I know that's nitpicking, but as they say, it's that little extra attention to detail that sets one video apart from the next. Have a great day!

Yea. I may consider that but it is what it is. Plus a lot of my videos are instructional through OBS software and feeding the desktop sound, the webcam sound, and another mic is something I probably don't want to mess with. That's for the comment though.

As a long time user, I agree with Henry. If your budget can handle it, UltraPak is the way to go. Especially if you've skipped a year or two of upgrades as I've done some years. It gets you caught up with most of the desirable RealTracks and styles. I also sometimes buy the $49 extra 49- pak if it has enough features that I want; guitar/piano lessons/extra styles etc... that I didn't get in earlier packs. Also, as Henry, I always get mine sent on the USB 3.0 hard drive, though I've almost always already downloaded and installed it on my main PC; Then I run the external HDD from my laptop because of it's smaller onboard HDD.

Band in a box is truly brilliant but as everyone says the user interface is dreadful. Even if the only thing they did was to lose that crappy looking 'hand written' font they use for the chords that would be a start. I'm an old musician but this whole thing looks even older than me.... and that's saying something. Why can't this interface look as fresh and handsome as Henry??? :) Thanks for all that you do, Henry.

Yes. I like the product a lot. It doesn't support all the types of music I like to do but for most of my songs it works pretty well.

You have to buy them separate, I use UltraPak+ and with all of the add-ons I have 9500+ styles

Excellent video Henry, Congratulations! You are absolutely right. Even though I don't know how to speak English and I'm writing to you through a translator, I put the Spanish subtitles from RU-vid on your videos and I learn a lot. This month I upgraded my 2019 MegaPack to the 2022 Ultrapack, for the time being. I think Band in a Box is very complete. Please, I have a question: How is it now possible to work with microchords that can be up to 16 per 4-beat bar, (in previous versions only up to four per bar); Is it possible to make pauses, lengthening, note cuts or staccatos in those microchords? Hi Henry. I've just entered the Band in a Box community by purchasing the 2023 pro version. Then I saw this video. As I have the latest edition and cannot upgrade, I notice the the pro paks were created in 2022. does this mean that I have most of these styles anyway?

Henry, quick question. I have many great, professional sample libraries from 8Dio, Native Instruments, Spitfire and many more. Most are accessed through Kontakt 7. If I just buy the the basic Band in a Box can I make use of my libraries through Kontakt 7 or even pasting the midi data for the general rhythm parts of a composition, like orchestral string, drum kits, etc? I understand that I won't get the actual recorded guitar licks and such from "real tracks" recording but I wonder if it would be enough for my purposes and would get me out of the lessor midi tones often associated with this. I just cant bring myself to spending another $400+ when I have thousands of dollars invested in libraries.

That's a good question. I also have a couple of Kontatk libraries but I honestly don't use them with BIAB. I use BIAB realtracks which are outstanding and for MIDI playing and the libraries I do that through my Bandlab. I guess it depends on what is easiest for you. I got to the point where I want to keep programming at a minimum so that's why I go either with BIAB or some of my samples.

Hi Henry! Loving the videos. I was looking at buying BIAB. PM Music appear to have similar upgrade offers today for 2022 to 2023 as they had for 2021 to 2022 when you did your video. Henry I have 2019 and agree with you 100%. Get the UltraPak for sure. I have been fooling around with Toontracks. It has some very nice sounds but it is far more expensive and not as easy to use or understand. BIAB offers sooooo much more. Can you please tell me what you use for string sounds? I have a midi controller and use Studio One DAW version 3 and have been using Studio One offerings. I don't want to use a big keyboard bc no space but would like better string sounds. Can you recommend a good string sound I can use alongside BIAB while only using a midi controller. Also what do you use for drum loops? Again I use what my DAW offers. Sometimes I just want loops. THX so much for this video. I have been away from recording for a while but want to get back into it. I actually created a JAZZ song in BIAB that is awesome. I didn't even need to play my guitar. That's how great the arrangement is!!!

Hi. For my string sounds I use an M-Audio MIDI controller (USB) running through Bandlab (Cakewalk). I use their String Machine Virtual Synth and manually play the passages into my DAW. I do this a lot because even though BIAB strings are great they don't do very many lead lines our counter-melodies. Hope this helps.

@@henryclarke5407 thx for getting back to me I greatly appreciate it. I have Akai MPK mini. My space is too small for a bigger keyboard. I have been using Studio One string sounds and playing parts myself, so I guess we are doing the same thing. I was wondering how to use Native Instruments $99 String sounds, but I don't understand how it would work in my DAW. Impossible to get thru to their support so I haven't purchased it. Henry, I want to give you my opinion of BIAB compared to Toontracks. BIAB is the Fastfood of these products, TT a boutique, lol. I love BIAB but I love TT too. The piano parts are really good and offer more flexibility than BIAB but Brent Mason has amazing solos in BIAB, lol. Neither product is perfect. I'm more invested in BIAB but TT is worth a look. I am seeking good drum loops at this time too. I did get some good use out of Studio One version 3 for loops oddly enough. I imagine Version 6 has more loops and string sounds but haven't upgraded yet. I had a month of energy and inspiration but now my motivation is low. I finally finished up songs that sat in my head for too long. I used both BIAB and TT. Thx for getting back to me!!

I don't have audiophile so I can't really tell you. However I will say that most people don't have the fine tuned ear to tell the difference.

Hi Antonio. I don't really spend a lot of time creating styles. I personally found out it wasn't worth the effort when I can usually find a style worthy of what I want to accomplish already in the system. However you may want to check the PG-Music website. I'm sure there is a tutorial out there.

Hi Henry, yet another great explanation of your process, I am running bib on a mac pro, the version I have is 2019 audiophile it has been sounding great until yesterday when upon launching it, a message appeared saying fatal error please contact your software supplier, have you any idea what this could be. I guess I will now have to uninstall the whole bib package and start again. Has this ever happened to you is bib easy to uninstall ?. Cheers. Andy. Scotland.

My 2019 on PC died last week ! according to PG Music it was out of warranty. I'm not great with mac's, is the hard drive recognised? mine wasn't and eventually crashed any computer it attached it to. If the drive is ok then yes uninstall and reinstall

@@brianrichards3128 Hi thank you for the info, the mac works fine on every other programme except anything associated to bib, I use reaper which will now not load, if I even try to open it on its own, the same result when I try to open bib. So the problem seems to be all linked to the launch files, the message that appears and cannot be removed says unable to access i/o fatal error contact your software supplier. I have to then hard reboot my computer to get it up and running again. It is as if all permissions to use bib had been suddenly removed. Strange. Thanks for you input. Cheers. Andy. Scotland.

Andy, for some reason I can't see the replies. I have no idea what happen to them but if it happen to me and I had a spare USB drive laying around I would copy all my realtrack sets and my song files to the drive and reinstall. I know that it will take a while to do that but it may be the best thing. Especially if you decide to upgrade.

I have a different perspective, all I want is MIDI, I develop the song in BiaB, save it to a MIDI file, and produce the final version using the MIDI file to drive my hardware synths. I don’t even bother to install the real tracks files, they are of no use to me.

Different perspective is fine. A lot of people who have BIAB don't have impressive hardware racks so they are disappointed in what they hear coming out of their sound cards. Of course if you just want to produce MIDI files you can just as easily do that straight in a DAW unless you're using BIAB MIDI styles. Still a different perspective is always welcome.
