Hey guys! It's been way too long since I filmed a hair video but it's been protective style season over here! I recently got some fulani braids and if you know me, then you know that it's hard for me to keep braids in longer than 2 weeks. "One more week???" I have had my braids in going on 2 whole months. I refuse to sit in a chair for 6 hrs, to take it out after 2 weeks.

*I just finished watching the video, and she did everything I do😂 it’s below* The key to washing your braids (cornrows & box braids) and still having them look good is once you finish washing, moisturize your scalp, and apply mousse to all parts that include your natural hair. Tie it down w/a scarf and sit inter a dryer so the top can dry fast and neatly. The synthetic parts can air dry. I’ve been wearing braids for years and this has always worked for me. I keep mine in for at least 4-6 weeks

Me too, I would just add that with cornrows I use a soft hair brush and brush the cornrows. The brush massages my scalp and gets in between the parts without disrupting the style, rinse then condition, rinse again. Towel dry put on hair products of choice, tie down with silk scarf and I let my hair dry, no heat. My cornrows can last me for 2 months and they stay clean and fresh.

Wash the braiding hair with ACV . The coating on braiding hair often causes the itching

You should try rinsing the braiding hair with ACV before you braid! That helps to reduce the itching a lot for me! It could also be the brand of braiding hair too that can cause a lot of itching

I can’t wash my hair with braids. It just makes my natural hair pop out of the braids more and it looks older faster.

I found this works better with smaller braids vs bigger ones. And if maybe if you concentrate the efforts on the scalp, that might work better as well.

Use a stocking cap to wash your hair it works so well. And between washes I use dry shampoo to help remove build up on my scalp.

Apple cider vinegar mixed with water is my go to for my scalp. It really balances the ph for my scalp. Relieves me of itching, and really cleans and purifies the scalp. I then wash my braids like normal. And then in a spray bottle use 99% aloe juice mixed with my leave in condition. My scalp is no longer dandruffy or itchy. I also notice I retain way more moisture in my hair now.

Wow they came out great! I washed my braids once and they were so old and frizzy looking after so I never did it again! They were also really heavy because the water was weighing them down.

When I have braids, I still continue to wash my scalp every 2 weeks. I work out so it gets sweaty. I’ll either use ACV rinse, or get in the shower and wash with shampoo. I use Uncle Funky Daughters Defunk also.

I use braid spray when I get my hair braided. It soothes my scalp and moisturizes my hair also. I definitely will try washing my hair like she did with holding the ends. Great idea 💡

Hi so nice to see someone who clean there hair when it's in braids. I have seen some discussing head dandruff lent and some unidentifiable stuff. Please don't leave your kids hair braided for the entire summer not good for the hair at all. Beautiful job the braids are looking good.

Its weird to me because this was something that was ALWAYS done years ago but I guess the knowledge of doing this got lost when folks started this only wearing braids for a week thing? Idk what happened but when I saw how many views this video got I was thinking it shouldn't be that high because this is something that should have ALWAYS been known. Its supposed to be as basic to see a video about this as you see someone washing their hair. But unfortunately now-a-days this is something "special."

I don’t know how you guys wash your hair on protective styles, mine would look so frizzy after and it would be hell taking them out after! 😩 Next time I get a braided style I’m gonna wash the hair in ACV before to avoid itching

I came from the time in the 90s where you were told by stylists to cleans your scalp with things like Sea breeze. It was an antiseptic or so. It was cleansing. You used that to maintain cleaning your scalp. You really wouldn't wash it, at least not right soon after you got your braids. Some were using stocking caps or so on their hair so they could shampoo and condition regularly and that was to help hold down the fuzz. The whole point was to maintain the style. Now after you had it in for a month then you'd go to the stylist and they would redo the perimeter and they would wash and do all of that stuff. Now a days no one mentions this so its all lost. Folks get their hair just braided and wash as their regular schedule then it comes out all messed up then they are taking the braids right out again because they've loosened the hair and frizzed everything up.

I just got fulani braids in last week. My hair is already frizzing and my scalp has been itching. I'm going to give this a try and see if it works. I want to keep my braids in for a few more weeks. Thanks for the info.

The itching on your scalp could also be due to the braiding hair that you use or how your scalp reacts to the hair. Most people use the hair right out the package but it’s good to wash the hair before you use it. I started washing the hair before I used it and there’s definitely a lot less itching. Before my scalp would be itching after the first day or 2.

Ppl saying their hair would get so frizzy....ya of course but just transition your style. The same way you do when you stretch your washes when you don't have braids in 🤷🏽‍♀️. Scarves, buns, updos. Just use some mousse and work with it cause hair should be washed!

This reminds me of when I worked in a salon and the women would come in and get their braids washed and I would use my nails to scrub their scalp and they would be in heaven lol

With the itchy scalp I also used to experience the same thing. It’s caused by the chemical in the extensions/braiding hair. You need to rinse it with apple cider vinegar let it air dry and then braid.

I had to get antibacterial hair for my daughter because braids put her scalp on fire and it made a BIG difference!! I don’t know that type of hair was a thing until I saw Ms Vaughn use it on her hair.

I believe in good scalp care so washing is not an option but a necessity. I wash my hair a few times per week. Moisturization is what cares for and grows hair (as well as hair cuts).

Alot of people don't know that they are allergic to the braiding hair. It will irritate and itch your scalp. I found this out in a bad way,after doing research I found out that was the problem. You can wash the braiding hair before install if you soak it in the sink you will see a film come to the top, it's what they coat the hair with when processing. Hope this helps.

ACV ACV ACV. Soak the braiding material in it. It gets rid of the synthetic coating on braids that cause the itching. I keep my styles for a month or over so I always do this.

Do a ACV rinse on the braiding hair before installing the braiding hair. It has an alkaline coating on the braiding hair that is causing your itching. I have no problems since I've been doing this.

Apply "Stop It" on the scalp before braiding your hair it works and your hair hardly gets dandruff or itches

I heard this somewhere on RU-vid, but you might be allergic to the chemicals in the braiding hair. Try washing them with apple cider vinegar before braiding, it might help with the itching

I FULLY relate . I always end up taking my hair down after two weeks because I can’t take the itching, even without protective styles I have to wet (not wash) my hair at least twice a week 🤧I don’t know why that is lol

it does ! They never speak about the side effects of to tight braids and what happens after. I had braids for 3 weeks but got it done from my Ethiopian hair dresser because she knows how not to make it to tight or what hair to use so that it’s not to heavy for you. The long you have it the more problems you get

Not really. It depends on how it's plait and especially how you take them down. It's very important to oil your scalp during protective styles, paying special attention to the corners.
