On the 20th anniversary of the historic Sotheby’s auction of Hollywood icon Katharine Hepburn’s estate (held June 10 and June 11, 2004, in Manhattan), I look back on that legendary event and reflect on my experience there, which I shared with my mom.
A Hepburn fan since I was a child, I went to the auction with a limited amount of money in hopes of coming away with some type of memento of the woman who was Hepburn. But on opening day, lots began going for astronomical sums-well, well, well above Sotheby’s estimates-from the get-go. I sat in the auction hall with my paddle wondering if I’d walk away with anything at all.
Watch this short film to find out how I beat the odds-on a clothing salesperson’s income no less-to become the owner of Hepburn’s handbag.
In the interim, I’ll share cool facts about the Spencer Tracy bust Hepburn made of her longtime love and provide insight on the early days of Hollywood, the Academy Awards (Oscars), and more.
