In this video, Professor John Ahr of the Online Jewelry Academy takes viewers on a virtual field trip to the Annealing and Soldering Department of Monte Christo Trade Corp. in Los Angeles, CA.
Monte Christo Trade Corp. is a full-service jewelry manufacturing facility in the heart of the downtown Los Angeles Jewelry District. In this brief video we will visit their Annealing and Soldering Department department to see how two different machines are used to anneal bulk wire and solder machine made chain. You'll be surprised at how the soldering is accomplished.

This appeared in my recommendation page on RU-vid today and the funny thing is that I was looking at a really fine silver chain the other day and was pondering exactly how they soldered the tiny snake like links....welll there you go. ..Prof John isn't jzst a great teacher, he's psychic too!

Nice video. Does the solder flow on to the entire chain?

No, only in the seams. 😀

hi Professor John! i would be really greatfully if you can teach me how the powder solder is made. sorry my english language is not good. I mean the right proportion of each component

I have never made powdered solder. You need to research the topic further. Perhaps you can find a recipe for it online or in a book. Good luck with your creative pursuits.😀

Since the entire chain is coated with a soldering powder before it goes into the machine, what keeps the links from getting soldered to each other and what prevents the links from getting coated with solder alloy? Ideally, one would want the solder to only stick to the ends of the wires of each link.
@OnlineJewelryAcademy

The kiln soldering process shown in the video uses a solder that comes in a powdered form. The chain is vibrated in a container full of the powdered solder. So, the solder only fills the gaps in the links and shakes off of the rest of the chain. : )

I haven't made any contacts within the jewelry industry with any companies that produce the type of chain you described. So I don't think the OJA will have a video on that topic any time soon. Thanks for your support! : )

I love seeing how things are manufactured. What I don't understand about the soldering machine, how does the chain not come out completely covered in some solder if it's been completely covered with flux? Did I miss something?
@OnlineJewelryAcademy
@OnlineJewelryAcademy 7 лет назад
The chain is prepared using a two-part process. First, it's tumbled with a powdered mixture of flux and a soldering alloy. The mixture coats the entire chain and gets packed into the seams of the links. Then the chain is tumbled a second time in talc. The talc removes the material applied in the first step from the outer surface of the chain. The seams of the links retain the flux and solder mixture. So, when the chain is fed through the soldering oven, only the seams are soldered. Sorry this wasn't clearly explained in the video. Thanks for your support! : )

oh. Now i got it!! firstly thank you John and Grey for the demo. a very interesting machine (news to me) . but what amazes me is that even AFTER the 2nd tumbling. the solder powder stays in the seams. very cool. thank you for sharing.

The soldering machine in the video is the property of Monte Christo Trade Corp. in the downtown Los Angeles Jewelry District. I do not know the value of the machine. You can probably research it on the internet and find a manufacturer who sells them. Thanks for your support! : )

How expensive are those machines? I can only imagine considering how much I spent on tools. Lol
@OnlineJewelryAcademy
@OnlineJewelryAcademy 4 года назад
I've never looked into the price of automated chain making machinery. So, I don't have an answer for you. But I imagine that they are quite an investment. Monte Christo has several engineers on staff who help keep their pre-WWII equipment running. So, don't forget to factor in the cost of staff to keep the machines running. 😀
