Video review on how my plasti dipped wheels have held up after about 3.5yrs. My original how to plasti dip your wheels video was released back in December 2014. The reasons that I chose plasti dip is that it’s cheap, easy to apply, can be removed if I change my mind, protects my wheels over the harsh winter seasons, looks great, and is durable when done correctly.
Overall I have to say the coating has held up extremely well. These are just a black plasti dip finish without any glossifier, so it does have a satin finish. For maintenance, the only thing I have really done is washed with Spray Nine and a soft brush to remove any road debris and brake dust. No conditioners or protective coatings have been applied.
I haven’t experienced any stone chips, pealing, or bubbling. There is a couple marks in the coating showing the wheel paint finish which maybe from storage. Markings on the inside of the wheel is from rubbing on the dust shield from the brakes during installation or removal. So you will need to be careful with that. I have also experienced some marking when using sockets to install or remove my lug studs as well.
No touch ups have been done over the years either.
If you plan on leaving the coating on the tires, not something I’d recommend but I did leave it on the inside of the one tire just out of curiosity. It will eventually peal as shown in one of my previous videos. When used in the winter and driving through deep snow, I have found the snow can stick to the coating and may cause balancing issues which will result in vibrations when driving. If there is ice build up on the coating, it will also be harder to remove.
When done correctly, you can achieve a very clean finish with minimal orange peal. It can be a little tricky to apply, especially if the can or temperature outside is cooler. So if you allow the can to soak in a bucket of warm water, this can help with the application process. During the application process, the wheels were washed, dried, and then I followed up with rubbing alcohol to remove any contamination to maximize adhesion.
I have found plasti dip to have some negative stigma, personally I think it’s a great product that has help the test of time on my winter wheels. Being that it is a spray on rubber coating, I haven’t found any issues with fading either.
So if you’re looking for a cheap and easy way to change up the look of your wheels, this is certainly a great option.
