Edit: Full review of Panasonic GH5 now up: • Panasonic GH5 Review A...
I am looking to sell my Canon EOS 5D Mark II as it rarely gets used any more except as a backup/2nd camera at a wedding.
As I now have the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV as my main camera and both the Panasonic GH4 and GH5 as video cameras, will the stills from the GH5 be good enough to replace the 5D Mark II for the occasional wedding shoot?
Good glass (lenses) can make or break a camera's image quality so, using the Metabones Speedbooster x0.71, I tested the Panasonic GH5 with both the EF 70-200mm L 2.8 IS and EF 50mm 1.4 lenses.
I was pleasantly surprised at how clear and sharp the images were which must be due to the removal of the low pass filter covering the image sensor (I wish I could rip that filter off the 5D Mark IV)!!!
Anyway, in this video you can see some of the sample images from both of these lenses and more info and 50mm 1.4 samples at the link below:

Note: This is not a review as such, more of an answer to a question on another RU-vid video I uploaded last week. All sample images have been processed from the original RAW files.

Nick. You hit the nail on the head in your last reply, about unrealistically looking for one camera that does it all. I have not been following my own advice and general belief that dedicated equipment/tools are usually the best at handling the task they were designed for. A Swiss Army knife is not going to be the best screwdriver, scissors or wine opener. I originally chose the 5Div specifically to get the kind of still-picture taking that I wanted. Then when I got excited about the outstanding flexible video capabilities and quality of the new GH5, I got side-tracked and thought that I should be getting the same video capabilities with my 5Div. However, the 5Div is a different animal and I'm back to appreciating it for what I originally saw in it. I will keep the 5Div, wait to see what firmware/hardware retrofit materializes in the next month, and then decide how soon I need to add the expanded video flexibility of the GH5. Maybe I'll be able to get my necessary video done with the expanded 5D firmware. If not, I'll end up with what you have already found to work best. Add the GH5 to the 5Div for the best of both worlds. Cheers, Hal

I never understood how people can compare a 4/3 sensor GH5 to a full frame camera. Jeez, its even smaller than an APS-C sensor. Then I also bought a GH5. Now I understand everything.

That's incredible. Probably not even comparable but I have a native Lumix 300mm telephoto and I can't get definition like that at distance even on a sturdy tripod and the best lighting. Until now, I've been blaming the GH5 being sub par for photos (I got it primarily for video). Goes to show how quality glass makes all the difference! I have a metabones speedbooster for my Nikon lenses. Might try a few tests.

Hey Nick I'm curious how well the autofocus is with the adapted glass. Like how well does the face and eye detect work for stills specifically after you adapt. Does it work as well as it does for a native micro 4/3 lens or do you notice some issues? Thank you!

Nice videos ,Good information! I'm stumped on lens choices I have the gh 5 And invested in the medanones speedbooster and the sigma 18-35mm because of all the great reviews I've read. The benefits I noticed are bettter in low light and lil more boki , but is that worth the $1400 for the setup? I also have the Panasonic 12-35 with dual IS this lens goes on my zyhriun crane matter of fact this set up is why I bought the camera. I'm now getting a zoom, I already bought the tamron 70-200 vc g2 but I hear so many good things about the Panasonic 35-100 dual ISSo I might buy that too to do a review on this exact setup. If I like the Panasonic 35-100 then I see no need for the medanones and the sigma and I could just buy a 1.4 prime lens for the Low light comparison. I guess my question is should I go nAtive or medanones? Is the 70-200 full frame lens with medanones much better then the native Panasonic 35-100 with dual Is? The tameron 70-200 f2.8 with medanones would be 2.0 (full frame conversion would be f4.0) The Panasonic 35-100 f2.8 (full frame conversion would be f5.6)

Oh man, I had the 5DMKII before the GH5 also and just found the shots were way better. I have the same lenses as you also and with the 70-200 f2.8 but I had some weird disconnection issues from the metabones XL so had to send it back. It was supported the whole time but still just mustve been too much strain on the connections. They repaired/replaced it under warranty, but it really knocked my confidence in using them together again. I never remove the metabones from the body. Have you ever had any issues like that? Hoping it was a one off coz warranty is past now and these things were not cheap! Why does your software say 142mm when its 284mm?
@NickStubbs
@NickStubbs 4 года назад
142mm...the software shows that because that is the 200mm final length used in the shoot multiplied by the 0.71 adjustment of the speedbooster. Also, when using the 70-200 on the GH5, make sure to connect to a tripod using the lens mount and not body mount (and never hold this set up with the camera body...take the strain by holding the lens). The weight of the lens could cause a disconnect over time using the latter due to strain on the connection. I've had no problems at all this way and like you, I pretty much leave the metabones on all the time.
@SaiKelly
@SaiKelly 4 года назад
Nick Stubbs good to hear. Yes totally have always supported the lens well either by hand or on the lens mount. Only had the metabones a short time so it wasn’t wear then. Glad to hear that I maybe just got a lemon! A one-off “Friday car”.
@SaiKelly
@SaiKelly 4 года назад
Also, yes 200mm x .71 is 142 but what about the crop factor of the sensor? Just trying to wrap my head around that. Does the software not take the crop sensor into account?

Thanks for all the insight, I read you used your GH5 with a 16-35. With the Metabones adapter, could you get a real 16mm without black lines on the image ? thanks
@NickStubbs
@NickStubbs 7 лет назад
pH Vision Yes, using the Speedbooster, you don't get the black lines as it shoots 16:9 ratio. However, the 16mm becomes 22.72mm (16 x 2 x. 71).

What about the stabilization on video mode with the 70-200? Is the internal IBIS enough for shooting at 70mm? or do you think the OIS of the Canon lens is better? Could the both work together or do you have to turn one off? I would like to buy a Canon 70 - 200 but I don't know if I should buy the stabilized one (especially if it's not working with the IBIS) What do you think?
@NickStubbs
@NickStubbs 7 лет назад
Yannick Klein If shooting handheld, both is definitely better and the IS on the 70-200 is great. When shooting at 200mm, the GH5 5-axis stabilisation isn't as good but the Canon lens IS is. On a tripod, I tend to turn the lens IS off as it "hunts" and affects the footage.

Great video! I'm actually trying to decide whether to get the gh5 or Sony a7iii for shooting independent films. I'm coming from the Canon 5dii, so I have several Canon lenses. Which would you recommend? Thanks.
@NickStubbs
@NickStubbs 6 лет назад
Tough choice. Obviously the Sony is slightly newer tech with a beautiful full frame sensor but the GH5 has a few extras that the Sony doesn't have that may sway you. NOTE: There is a full frame GH?Something about to be announced at Photokina but I don't think it is set for release until Spring 2019. The GH5 can shoot 4k at 60fps and 1080p at up to 180fps. It has a fully articulating screen whereas the Sony is just "tilting". There's more pro's and cons of each but personally, I LOVE the GH5 with it's 10-bit, All-intra, 4K, 400mbps internal recording, focus peaking, zebras, waveforms etc. It works like a charm with all my Canon glass too. If you can afford it, and want better low light, maybe look at the GH5s? I can't say much about the Sony as I have never used one but it looks pretty cool...
@ZoranvonderHeide
@ZoranvonderHeide 5 лет назад
For video: daylight -> GH5, low light -> Sony A7M3 For stills: Sony A7M3 I have the GH5 and my client first bought the Sony A7M3 and few weeks ago additionally the GH5. The handling of the GH5 is much more video focused. Stay with Canon lenses don't get native M43 lens. There are expensive and less build quality. For Sony A7M3 get the Sigma MC11 adapter and for GH5 the Metabones SpeedBooster XL 0.64 (for FF lenses but works with Sigma 18-35mm f1.8) or the Ultra 0.71 (for APS-C but on the GH5 closer to Super35).

Thanks much for your detailed/to-the-point answers. The GH5/Metabones/Canon combo is very impressive. Glad the glass to body weight balance issue is not major. I liked your Google Earth distance illustration. I would not have imagined it was that great a distance. All the more impressive sharpness test. This all makes me very tempted to get the GH5, and use it with my Canon 5Div lenses to shoot high quality video. Part of me worries that once I start shooting GH5 video and also get good stills with it (with Canon glass as you did), I might not want to carry around or use my new Canon 5Div body anymore. I'm still in the return period for my 5Div body. It's an uneasy quandary. Nick, how good is the GH5 AF with Canon/Metabones for video shooting? I consider the Canon dual pixel AF outstanding. I'm wondering if there is any significant video AF loss there. And if there is AF loss with the GH5, is that because of the Metabones adapter, or would there be loss anyway even with just a native GH5 lens without Metabones?
@NickStubbs
@NickStubbs 7 лет назад
Yes, the GH5 has so much more to offer with video over the Mark IV other than just quality. You have focus peaking, zebras, great slow motion, waveforms, HDMI out, 10-bit internal etc. However, the AF with Canon glass really isn't up to much on the GH5 (or I am doing something wrong). It tends to hunt a lot before locking on and the tracking isn't anywhere near as good as Canon's dual pixel autofocus. I always use manual focus for video whichever camera I use. Even when I used fixed lens semi pro video cameras like the Sony PMW EX1, the autofocus was never super reliable.

Halunlimited i had the same thoughts but in no way the Gh5 is gonna come close to 5div in photo quality. It is not only 20 mpx micro four thirds against 30 mpx ful l frame, but it is also the deptht of field, the blurring of the background, the dynamic range, the low light, the snappiness of the autofocus for wildlife and sports, you name it. You got carried away by the hype of the GH5 talk now and you get that itchiness of changing gear particular to these times and days. Before people were changing gear once every 15 years. Canon 5div is an amazing camera, it will ALWAYS have a better autofocus, video and photo, than the GH5, ( and what is more important than being in focus in video?) and it will have that full frame look. Plus, there are rumors of a revolutionary firmware, which will change the crop to 1.29 and add C log, not to mention that Magic Lantern didn't even look into it to unleash the fantastic potential. You are about to trade a fantastic camera for a very good one.
@adrianpocea2287
@adrianpocea2287 7 лет назад
Nick Stubbs To add to this, since the Canon 5div , all my jealousy for Nikon and Sony for low light and latitude went way, i can put my camera to any conditions of light and darkness and it will deliver.,I go out at dusk and shoot hummingbirds, there is no way i would feel the same confidence with GH5, i shoot at night, stars, moon, crazy high iso, no way Gh5 can match that, both in video and photo

Hi Zilvinas, Yes, sounds like a great combo. Don't forget, you get some crop factor with that set up that gains extra reach, plus the built-in tele zoom works really well. This page may help with understanding the different models but in a nutshell, one has a wider field of view than the other: www.metabones.com/products/details/mb_spef-m43-bm1 With regards to using the Speedbooster on the GH5, I have had no issues since the last firmware update and focussing is pretty fast plus IS works on those lenses that have it. Focus isn't as fast as dedicated Panny or Olympus M43 lenses but is still very good. Lastly, Canon lenses can be a LOT heavier than Leica, Panny or Olympus M43 lenses so bear that in mind. Whatever you decide, you will love the GH5...amazing camera!

Shooting stills, no problem at all. Shooting video I wouldn't rely on it although I must say I have spoken to and am waiting for a firmware update from Metabones for the Speedbooster. To get it to work right now, I have to push in the aperture button (on the Speedbooster) whilst turning the camera on, and then push it again to activate once the camera is on. Even so, I don't think the autofocus is great with the Canon/Speedbooster combo for video but time, and testing, will tell. Using the Panny and Olympus M43 lenses on the other hand, is a lot better and more reactive and usable...still not super though. Anyway, I always shoot manual focus for video unless doing "selfies" for tutorials with the 5D Mark IV's excellent Dual Pixel Autofocus which is fantastic in comparison.

Abishake Rakthey That's a tough one. I'm also looking at getting the EVA1 and look forward to using my Canon glass on it. However, the mft lenses for the GH5 are so much lighter and smaller... Over time, try to build up a set of both ; ) I love my Canon glass but the Olympus M43 12mm and 45mm are superb and tiny. If you are definitely going for the EVA1, I would say look at EF lenses and a Speedbooster so you can use them on both cameras.

I figure it would be GH5 in 4K - 200mm*2*2*0.71 = 568mm, would this just look like shit? ..could even use a GH4 4K without speedbooster on a bright day at 200mm*2.3*2 = 920mm O_O, is this bad math?

In my opinion, the GH4 footage looked better than the 5D Mark IV when I tested this combo so I reckon the GH5 would be even better as it has no low pass filter. In my tests, the GH4 did well at all apertures from f5.6 to f16. Check out this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-32O32Rvgi7Y.html

...The 5D Mark IV with 70-200mm lens (at 200mm) plus 2x Extender plus 1.74x crop at 4K meant the focal length used was just shy of 700mm (696mm). The GH4 with 70-200mm (at 200mm) plus 2x Extender, plus Metabones Speedbooster (.71x), plus 2.3x crop from 4K sensor at 4K meant the focal length used on the GH4 was 653mm.

Might be late to the convo, but you might be better getting the Pany 100-300mm. Really, anything beyond 600mm FFE (Full Frame Equivalent) is redundant. Between atmospheric issues, you cant see that far anyway for the most part, your better off just getting closer to your subject. I have the Tamron 150-600 with 1.4 teli, works out to about 1200mm FFE on the GH5, and I promise you, its too much reach, and the image quality leaves much to be desired. My 100-300 easily gets me better results, easier to carry and use, and I still find that even at 100mm (200mm FFE), its too teli for most things.

Hey Nick I'm curious how well the autofocus is with the adapted glass. Like how well does the face and eye detect work for stills specifically after you adapt. Does it work as well as it does for a native micro 4/3 lens or do you notice some issues? Thank you!

Can't say I have tried that yet as I use the camera mainly for video and I use manual focus for that. Might give it a try tomorrow and report back but I am almost certain it will work ok : )
