Istanbul is one of those places whose geography seems overpowered on first glance, but when you dig a little deeper, you realize it has just as many flaws as it does blessings.

In addition to its strategic location, Istanbul's geography also provided natural defenses that made it difficult to conquer. The city is situated on a hilly peninsula, making it easy to defend against invading armies. The Sea of Marmara and the Golden Horn, which are both natural harbors, also provided protection from naval attacks.

Istanbul Geography is the reason it was made the capital of the Ottomans Through conquest, the Ottomans gained control of many ports and had sole access to the Black Sea, from which even Russian vessels were excluded, and trade among the provinces increased greatly. As the largest city in western Asia or Europe, Istanbul was the natural center of this commerce.
@Tarquinthetyrant
@Tarquinthetyrant Год назад
look its good, but still not the reason it was made the capital. the reason is because the ottomans claimed to be the succesor to rome and constantinople/istanbul was its capital. also it was a massive city for the time

Moreso made the capital to allow the Ottomans to claim themselves as the successor to the Roman Empire, the capital beforehand of Edirne being there to allow to Ottomans to be better positioned to take Constantinople(the cities name at the time)-geography just being a massive plus.

International law guarantees free access to the ocean, so Turkiye can’t charge for the Bosporus, as that would be barring countries from ocean access. Also, the Bosporus is a natural waterway. The Panama Canal and the Suez Canal are shortcuts (big shortcuts, but shortcuts nonetheless) that were human-made and ships have other ways to access the ocean besides them, so they can charge. Hence why Turkiye is building a canal so it can charge for passage while leaving the Bosporus free of charge.

When the second world war came they gave us even more control over the straights with Mountrox (idk how to spell that, sorry) so it was always us agreeing to these terms but for good reasons (gaining more than we loose with straight money)
