The cinematography of Nomadland, makes us feel like we are in the world of Fern, and that's all thanks to Chloe Zhao and Joshua James Richards spending the last 7 years making films all about real people and developing their style from a more documentarian take to a full-on narrative one.
So in today's video, I’m going to be covering the equipment he used, how he created the organic look through available light, as well as how he and Zhao crafted their now-signature look.
As always if you have a recommendation for an analysis, let me know below!

As someone who was a DMR Artist at IMAX, I can tell you that a majority of the films we converted to IMAX were mostly shot in the aspect ratio planned for the movie. For the Christopher Nolan Batman movies, we converted the non-IMAX shots to IMAX without changing the aspect ratio. We wanted the non-IMAX footage to match the IMAX footage in sharpness and cleanliness. We converted all the Marvel movies and Mission Impossible movies the same way. Never altering the aspect ratio even if there was IMAX footage in the film. I loved "Nomadland". Especially for the visuals. Nice work as usual.

Still need to watch this one but it looks lovely af. I looove Eggleston’s work, the way he uses color is mind blowing and I wanna do something similar next time I shoot something. Speaking of low budget shooting, maybe some videos on DIY gear and lighting solutions could work! Like using regular house lights is film lights or putting colored sheets over a window for colored lighting :)

I know I say this about every film, but it's easily one of my favourites of the past few years! It was actually kind of surprising to see his name pop up in the interviews, but you really do see elements of his work in this. I've definitely got some videos on DIY gear coming up soon (Need to release the actual film first), but I'll also look into alternate lighting solutions, because I definitely could have used a video like that starting out :)

Great video! Always so informative and well thought out content. This movie was not for me though. I loved how it looked but the story and some of the acting just made me loose interest. I might give it another go because of this video or maybe I’ll just binge Terrence Malick who’s films I truly love.
