IIRC the original games actually do have some sequels and spin off games! I'm hoping that since Phantasy Reverie Series was so successful they'll remake some of them.

I mean it did have a decent amount of spinoffs in the early 2000s, but it died sometime after that Wii remake.

Interestingly enough, I still like Huepow despite what he did.

Freedom Planet is kinda Deviantart-tier fan fiction-like yet it still have more sense and a better VA than most of the Sonic games. Although Klonoa having an inexistant language and simpler narration makes it superior in this aspect (same with Kirby).

@@inkchariot6147 Welcome to the Little Tail Bronx series, where in one game you have furries duking it out in mechas and in another you'll be bawling your eyes out in the tutorial because a scripted loss forces you to sacrifice one of the protagonists. And you don't just sit there and watch a cutscene, no no no. You have to *choose* which one of them dies and it's an emotional gut punch afterwards to see the others find out what happened to their friend.

​@@meta13gaming even in their more "experimental" early 3d phase the games are still not that great narratively or otherwise. It's kinda weird that ever since they went 3d they never quite got the hang of what to do with Sonic, the Adventure games had some solid ideas bogged down by the limits of early 3d gaming and superfluous features that don't add to the games, then a bunch of spin offs varying in quality happened, and after Sonic 06 the franchise never mustered an uncompromisingly great game. For such a recognizable mascot it's weird how Sega doesn't have their shit toghether about what direction to take the franchise and make sure the games are the best they can be.

@@Bellitchi reception to some of the games has been positive, but I'm moreso talking about fan reception and the general quality of everything put toghether. Colors and Generations were praised for gameplay and whatnot but the writing was actively obnoxious, the Advanced games were well liked but also they were spinoffs so they didn't get that much attention compared to main titles so you can't quote compare their scope, I can't speak for how well Super Stars launched and all, but Frontiers released super half baked and kinda buggy, and still is to a certain degree even with the latest DLC patch though it's not as bad as launch, not to mention that the game itself was rated like a 7/10 at launch at least so a considerable drop from the score games like Mania and Generations got even if it's still positive. But also you're failing to remember that this past era of Sonic isn't really bad but moreso insanely mixed, like between all the examples you listed there was some game that people either didn't care for or actively hated, like people half liked the Sonic Unleashed because of the normal Sonic parts but the werehog gimmick single handedly brought the game down, Sonic and the secret rings was gimmicky Wii remote shovelware, the knights game was whatever and again had an unsuccessful gimmick no one cared for, people found lost world to be mid and derivative with its Mario Galaxy planet gimmick that wasn't executed particularly interestingly, Sonic 4 was a shitty attempt at a modernised classic style, Forces was a shitty inferior version of what generation did with yet another tacked in gimmick with the OC player character, Sonic Boom was a yet another disaster, and while it wasn't a new release, the Colors remastered launched completely fucked. When you put all these games toghether it paints a very inconsistent and kinda disappointing picture, like sure there's good games in between but they never quite come with the full package because Sonic Team for whatever reason never really sticked with any one formula long enough to really build off of it through sequels and such, opting instead to hijack entire games with ill fitting gimmicks that don't complement the fast paced platforming Sonic is associated with and was kind of the appeal that made the first games so popular in the first place. Even in Sonic forces where they have an half great gimmick woth the open world/big open hub area with all the shit to do inside they still under deliver, like Sonic gets stuck on geometry, the physics kinda don't work well with the natural environment, and obstacles are just lazily placed floating around like a unity test room without much of a cohesive design to the implementation of obstacles throughout the environments, and a lot of the shit to do in the game is like random busy work instead of just focusing on platforming challenges and whatnot, not to mention all the weird cut content. Like the foundation for a great game are there, and at least in some aspects it's a pretty good game but it's simply not polished enough, and Sega might drop this kind of game formula entirely and never revisit again, like I said before, there's good games but the overall output of the series is mixed, and no game is a true masterpiece. The series was already kinda struggling with the adventure games era suffering from extra stuff that didn't add to the game quite like the Sonic/Shadow gameplay, but then Sonic 06 was an absolute disaster and now they alternate back and forth with good and bad games.

What Dumbsville forgets is that Freedom Planet, like Klonoa, was a pretty big fixation for fans of 90's-inspired mascot plattformers. Obviously, those fans hold the game in high regard, as well as its story for how ambitious it was for an indie game of that caliber. Unfortunately, people outside of the fanbase are much more perceptive of Freedom Planet's shortcomings, which is why it's so important to remember just how far the series has come in both storytelling and pacing.

Honestly, I thought I love the games. But as the years go by, I realized the duology has a weak link: the story, or more specifically, Sash Lilac. She is JUST PLAIN INSUFFERABLE!
