There was an Attorney here in Pennsyltucky that had a tatergun, it didn't go off, so he looked down the barrel and tried it again, when that tater hit him, it shattered his face like that 2nd shot, blinded him in one eye, legally blinded the other, put him in intensive care for quite a while, they didn't think he'd make it, but he eventually pulled through and carried on with his career.

I built an air powered cannon one year out of a portable air compressor and some pipe fittings. I used a 1 1/4 inch barrel about 6 feet long and it fit golf balls perfectly, I used to go to the driving range and they gave me their old balls. That thing would shoot a golf ball nearly a mile at 125PSI.

I love how smart this guy is, then he does this and I laugh my ass off.

I think the problem with the drill bit is the length of the tube and mass of the bit. Id imaging just selecting one of these 3 mods would make it work: less mass for the projectile, a shorter tube (longer is more friction which slows it down, also lets the air pressure equalize more), or higher volume of airflow to overcome the other limitations.

Speaking as an engineer, sometimes the stuff we build doesn't work either. It's really hard to build something in real life and make it work. Space X (the one created by Elon Musk) had 500 employees, took something like 100 million dollars of funding and 6 years, and their first 3 rockets still blew up before they reached orbit.

I went through a potato gun phase in my teens (a serious one lol, I built somewhere around 100 different potato guns😅, there was a forum called SpudTech, now named SpudFiles, with hundreds of highly educated members, with a few professors, DOD weapons designers and engineers mixed in that I learned from), delving into the fine details of how they work and how to get the best performance out of them. Now to make my point, the one with the small steel barrel wont perform well with the heavier steel projectiles for several reasons, one being the barrel is likely very rough inside and probably has a weld seam as well (very common with steel pipe of that size), the smaller the barrel is the finer the bore finish needs to be to obtain high velocity, along with a low friction but tight fit projectile, and two, combustion potato guns only make about 30-40 PSI with most standard fuels (oxy/acetylene is a different story lol, stay away from that unless you know *exactly* what you're doing), so there is a point where increased projectile weight and decreased bore diameter will exponentially decrease muzzle velocity. The potato gun that shot the golfballs would be much better suited to shooting the drill bit and BB's, with a proper sabot or shot cup that gun would shoot the drill bits or BB's at triple the velocity that the steel barrel version did, since there is a much larger area at the back of the projectile for that low 30-40 PSI to push upon. I could also go deep into chamber/barrel volume ratios, fuel/air mixtures, buffer gases, spark gap placement and output power, gas mixing and venting/purging, convergent zone geometry and much, much more but I'll keep this short for the sake of brevity lol.

Great entertainment! Those of us who have tried to shoot "potato guns" know that the fuel to air ratio is important in the ignition which in turn creates the pressure to send the projectile. I once shot a potato THROUGH a piece of plywood, so when you get it right, it is DEADLY!

I bought the potato gun manual back when I was 12. Most powerful spud gun: 4" x 4" x 2.5" (" y") is your start. Add a 4" female end to the side of the " y" that the 2.5" is not pointing too . This will have a 4" cap for loading spud and spray, before closing up with channel locks Then add a 2.5" female to the small t of the " y". The 2.5" plug for the female is what your going to drill to add the presta ignitor. If you crack the PVC start over, it has to be a clean hole. When you glue in the ignitor use epoxy, and let dry and add more you want the cap mostly filled with epoxy because that's your trigger the weakest point. To the other 4" side use a 4" x3" reducer coupling, then add a 3" x2. 5" reducer coupling, and add a 2.5" x4' barrel. It is louder than a 12guage it'll shock the block. Be safe use with precaution.
