Japanese Navy is getting a new surface combatant.
On July 21, Japanese shipbuilder Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Maritime Systems Co., Ltd. held a delivery ceremony and a "self-defense ship flag raising ceremony" for the ‘Agano’, the 6th Mogami class frigate.
With this event, the ship was officially commissioned with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF).
Like all ships of this class, the warship is also named after a river. The vessel is named after the Agano River which flows in the Hokuriku region of Honshu, Japan.
Agano was launched by MHI in Nagasaki in December 2022.

This is what the US Navy should have built for the Littoral Combat Ship. It can do all of the required missions and defend itself, something that the LCS is not able to do.

As it should. The Mogamis are the most advanced of the JMSDF's vessels, being stealth frigates with all the bell and whistles. And the these ships bearing the names of former IJN light cruisers is certain to give opponents pause.

When you compare this to the US NAVY Constellation class, it is a very clean design. However, if you look at the initial design of any US NAVY ship since the 1960's, they are also very clean.... Must be all those fake electrical engineers with fake US advance STEM DEGREES....

I would be interested in Japan's thoughts on a tethered drone ship that carries missiles and extra fuel. It would follow along and accept orders from the main ship's targeting and launch on a button press. Save the destroyers missiles and can carry dry supplies and armament. When exhausted the drone would be dismissed to return to a home port. Anyone done this? I like their reasoning on Tiawan and why it should be defended.
