Litigation hold preserves mailbox data only. To retain one drive data use retention policies.

You can apply hold only on mailboxes whereas with help of retention policy you can apply it on mailboxes, sharepoint sites, MS team as well

@@engineerranjan9841 Also, Retention policy can move mailbox data to online archive, whereas litigation hold just retaining the data in recoverable place.

If Retention Hold is applied on a mailbox, MFA bypasses that mailbox. That means when I am available I should be able to read my emails. Else a Retention Policy can purge Items from my mailbox if applied by Admin. I hope this clears your doubt.

No, it is different.

If you need those emails then move them to online archive, else you can purge them.

Retention Hold applied from EAC does not retain emails. It is enabled to restrict MRM/MFA from processing the mailbox. If your query is about Retention Hold applied from SCC, then as soon as you will remove the policy, mailbox contents will be purged.

@@Office365Concepts but we lost mails as soon as we disabled retention hold while enabling in place archive ..total of 80GB only 20GB is present in purges folder. Don't know where is remaining data.

@@rajamanohar7753 If retention was disabled, that means retention policy that was applied on the mailbox got triggered. And that can be the reason of loosing emails. You can run Get-Mailboxfolderstatistics "affected user" | fl to check folders size.

@@Office365Concepts Yes..we ran and cannot found that missing data of 60 GB and don't know where to get it. is there a way, please suggest. Our team has given up, stating they can't help(may be they don't know). Please suggest if there is a way.

@@rajamanohar7753 you can check Purges, Deletions and Discovery Hold folders. If these folders have contents, then you can recover them with the help of e-discovery or contents search. If these folders do not contain data, then I am afraid only MS can help you to get it recovered from backend.

It depends on the Retention Tags action that is applied on the mailbox.

@@shamuveljadhav6366 when retention hold is applied on the mailbox, MRM doesn't process that mailbox, so retention policy will not take any effect on the mailbox.

Hi, default retention period for Deleted Items folder is 30 days. If you have older emails in deleted items folder, then look for retention policies applied on your mailbox.

@Office365Concepts I have been following your videos , so resourceful and I am still learning. As an individual researcher on the topic, I can assure you the Default retention policy (mrm) has 30 day delete tag for personal folder. Unless you apply it to the Deleted Item folder, it won't automatically be applied. U r like guru, my comment is not to disrespect to anything, I'm a learner and learning everyday. Can you double check with any new tenant , Compliance center > data lifecycle management> exchange> retention tag and also retention policy. if u notice the tag personal, that means your email won't move unless u applied it.
