How long does it take to design a logo? Let's take a look using my logo design process.

One of the top 3 questions that I probably get asked on a weekly basis is 'How long does it take to design a logo?'.
If you work with me, the timescale is usually around 2 - 4 weeks, but this can differ from designer to designer. What I will say, is that if you are thinking of working with someone who is promising to deliver you a logo in just a few days, for what seems like a really low fee, avoid them. When I say low fee, I mean under a few hundred dollars/pounds.
My reasons for saying that are in my video. There are key processes that need to be carried out when designing a logo and I feel that there is a definite minimum timescale to create a successfully researched and designed logo.

This video was really helpful. I'm from a country where general people doesn’t consider graphic design as a good profession. They don't value the designers as a result designer get a very cheap price for their work yet the clients think this is too much. Struggling since the beginning.

Hridoy, it isn't just your country, it is the same worldwide. Graphic design is seen as a quick thing to do and the skills involved are not appreciated as much as they should be. I hope that you are able to get better fees for your work soon.

It took me about a couple of days to getting it onto paper. First think simple from your researches, then think big and stay on topic of the logo you’re creating, and then branch off masking different ideas, what looks good, what doesn’t and see what works best for you, though when you’re working with a client, be sure to see how they like it before you proceed and if there are changes that they want

Hi, I really liked this video it was really helpful. But would you maybe make a video about how you decide what to charge a client? I''m a starting designer and I work in the entertainment world and since a few weeks, people ask hey besides acting I want to start a clothing line you can design logos right? But I have no idea what to charge them.
@RockYourBrand
@RockYourBrand 5 лет назад
Hi Jay, Pricing can be a complex issue and is built on quite a few factors, like confidence, experience, value, process and so on. As a new designer, you won't have much experience behind you or a big portfolio of work. That doesn't mean that you have to charge peanuts though. I personally charge a fixed rate for my logo design service based on value as I have a set process that i go through, that i know works and how much I want to charge for that service. That only comes from years of doing logo projects though. As a new designer, a simple way to create a price is to work out how many hours you think you will work on the project. Then multiply that by how much you would like to be paid per hour. For example, if you want to charge $20 per hour and you think the project will take you 12 hours, then 20 x 12 = $240. Check out this video by Flux, he talks about why you should charge based on value and not an hourly rate, but that you should know what your minimum charge/hourly rate should be: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-U3a9W7tdzVs.html

what if you never took on clients before. I know practice makes perfect but my biggest concern would be that messing up with your first client would make getting future clients difficult to near impossible. Client: I had a bad experience with this designer. Potential clients (thoughts): well I don't want to work with him if he messed up that bad.
@RockYourBrand
@RockYourBrand 6 лет назад
We all have to start somewhere and it is a big learning curve. Where do you think you would mess up with the client? One thing I have learned is that if you make a mistake, tell the client straight away and then tell them how you are going to fix it. Hiding things will only result in trouble further down the road. The client may be annoyed at the problem, but they will value the fact that you were honest with them and worked to correct the problem.

Do you use any other type of contract before beginning or just the copyright handover document?

Yes, I have a contract for projects which I use. If you don't have one, the Aiga site is a good place to start. www.aiga.org/standard-agreement

Hello! I have a question about your last tip , Copyrights. Are you inferring that you have copyrighted the logo for the client ? Or do you mean you have just written a formal document affirming that you , the designer , are giving the logo rights over to the client?
@RockYourBrand
@RockYourBrand 7 лет назад
Correct on the second part, the document is to say that I waive all rights to the logo and are passing them over to the client. Thanks for the question Joshua, I'm sure others may have been thinking the same as you and so it is good to clear that up for everyone. Stay Creative! Col

its a useful tip and great speech, let me introduce myself ...i am vfx artist with 8 years experience but new to graphic and logo design, can u guide me where do i start for professional designer
@RockYourBrand
@RockYourBrand 6 лет назад
+TAMIL PA that is a tough one. I would say, if you can to try and get onto a graphic design course so that you can be taught the basics by someone that has a lot of experience in graphic design. Check to see if there are any colleges or universities running classes or blocks that you can sign up to. The other route would be to take an online course from somewhere like Lynda.com where the quality of courses is high. Books are a third option, but I really don’t think you can beat being taught in person by someone.

Hi, I got a question for you :) If a designer designs a logo for a company, are the designer then responsible if the company gets sued for a "to simular" logo or are the company responsible for checking that?
@RockYourBrand
@RockYourBrand 7 лет назад
This is a great question and it doesn't really have a straightforward answer. At a bare minimum, the designer should have liability insurance to cover any damages that may occur from any potential legal proceedings. Then there is what is in the contract between the designer and the client, where is liability assigned? Take a look at this piece, it helps explain it in more detail: www.quora.com/Who-should-be-held-liable-if-a-logo-designer-unwittingly-creates-a-logo-for-a-client-that-is-later-found-to-infringe-another-designers-copyright

How you supposed to make enough money making one logo every 2-4 weeks
@RockYourBrand
@RockYourBrand 2 года назад
I don’t just work on one single logo solidly for 4 weeks. That timescale includes taking time away from the project so I can come back at it with fresh eyes. I also working on other projects during that 4 week period. In total I probably spend about 40 hours on a logo design project (this includes some basic brand strategy work). It is possible to only do one logo per month and nothing else. It comes down to how much you charge for your logo design service. If you are charging $50 then it’s not going to be possible. If you are charging $5000 then it is absolutely possible.
