How many days does it take to dye Linen with Flowers? || Craftmas Day 3

I want to make my wild and homegrown linen to stand out from the rest of the homespun linen - so I thought that I would try to dye it with the flowers I grew myself! Dyeing plant fibers are notoriously difficult, so this multi-day process was necessary to have a shot at getting the dye to stick to my linen.

Engineering knits is a place for people who enjoy all kinds of vintage and antique crafts - from sewing to knitting, crochet to embroidery I like to try it all. I definitely have a preference for historical fibre crafts, and it is my dream to one day make an entire outfit from sheep to sweater. I hope you enjoy watching me and my favorite companion, Nutella, struggle through some fascinating projects!

I have loved watching this process. I am having to resist every temptation to try it myself because I already have WAY too many different types of projects on the go. It is so impressive that you followed through over the year or more, and filmed it all! Thank you!

How absolutely marvelous. Onion skins are my favorite natural dye- they give such a range (yellow/brown/green) depending on the mordant etc. They would be a fun grow also. Excited to see how the weaving goes!

I used avocado pits for a dusty rose (lemon juice mordant - it's what I had to hand) on my first homespun wool. I was surprised how much pink it took up. I added half a capsule of iron supplement (again, what I had to hand) to the remainder of the avocado dye and got a definite light brown for the next handful of wool. It took over a week to colour each. I might try red cabbage sauerkraut brine next, for a blue.

I’ve found myself eyeing off the skins on my onions. “No, Dragon, you don’t need to start trying to dye fibres.” Just have to keep on telling myself that.

I cannot get into words the amount of joy this Craftmas series gives me. I've just relearned spinning again after giving up over 10 years ago and also used Jillian Eve's amazing channel as a reference and help. And it is such a weird and amazing coincidence that you then teased this project and I can now follow your flax experiments. For some reason, writing this all in English is way easier for me than my native German, so I'll just continue. I'm from a traditional flax producing region (before Industrialisation that is) and many of the heritage sites and museums are focused on flax and weaving linen. If there's ever the need for a German article or book that you cannot access overseas, I could look it up or scan it. I'm working in archaeology and our office library is not big but but has some cool archaeological and historical tidbits about textile production.

Lance Leaved Coreopsis is hands down the most potent yellow dye I've ever seen. Protein fibers can produce a VERY dark red orange if they're soaked in concentrated coreopsis bath. But that's coreopsis tinctorum; the kind of coreopsis you're using. If you left both in the pot for several days you'll get a more intense result. I also had a lance leaved coreopsis tie dye hankie mom gave me to use as a test subject and it and a cotton undershirt I dyed in coreopsis turned prison jumpsuit orange in the wash. someone must have used too much of an alkali detergent before I got there. If you pack your clothes in too tightly or use too much it won't rinse out!

This has been so amazing and fun to watch!! Perfectionism also often makes me frustrated with my projects, so it’s so lovely and cathartic to see you forging ahead, content with any and all progress being made! Thats HUGE and adds such joy to the whole thing! Can’t wait to see what a meaningful trinket gets woven up tomorrow!

Great! Wool prefers a slightly acidic environment usually, so hopefully that works out for you, should be fine if its not too alkaline. The colours are stunning. I love natural dyes.

Very interesting! One of my hobbies is gardening and I can soooo relate to your journey being a year. As a gardener, I get a vision in my head and then I have to wait for the right season, for a plant to grow and mature, to realize the plant isn't in the ideal spot and then move it, wait for it to mature again ... LOL It's a labor of love. Thank goodness for the quick wins too that keep us motivated. So, all that to say, I'm enjoying this series and appreciating your patience and I'm finding it instructional. ... both the flax dyeing and the patience!

I've only worked with linen in a weave once, and it was well spun. I'm spinning a flax/silk blend right now that's uber thin and might (will) snap even on the ply, BUT - if you loosen your tension on the warp and use a shuttle/beater instead of relying totally on the heddle, maybe it's ok? I'm still experimenting myself, so not sure.

You worked for so many months and the outcome was great, can't wait to see what you have made with the linen, and the colour of the wool is lovely, note to self " lanolin is bad, and i don't need more hobbies " but. 😂

I'll be really interested to hear how stable this is, most of my natural dye experiments end up pretty transient. I've got high hopes for onion skins though, I've been collecting them in the mesh bags one gets 10 lb batches of onions in for a few years. I just need to do some research to see what kind of mordant I need to use for that and for walnut, cause every fall my mom's place has an abundance of nice black walnuts.

That's a good point I will have to remember for later! I should know it since I've used tea for tannins in winemaking but of course when she mentioned it, I thought first of the oak tannin I bought when I started upgrading my winemaking supplies!

Thank you I have not any experience with dying but its very interesting to see the changes in color. The only dye I ever tried was barberry stems boiled to get a faint yellow but that was in my basket making days.
