Knitting Vintage-Inspired Selbu Mittens (but I made a mistake)

I'm starting to knit at my accessories for my vintage ski sweater - beginning with some Selbu mittens! I was inspired by vintage and antique Norwegian mitten designs, pulling from my own vintage sweater to knit up these mittens - though at the end, I do realize I've made a bit of a mistake!

I laughed out loud when you revealed two left thumbs! If someone as creative and skilled as YOU can make this funny error, I feel so relieved! I love these projects - this will be a darling match-up!

This is what I love about all the creators who would rather show us the reality then to make us believe that everything is perfect! When you watch someone who is highly skilled and it seems like they never mess up it can be really intimidating to try and do some thing ourselves. But if people that we respect show us when things don't go right then it breaks that down and we don't feel like we have to try for perfection.

•Love the pattern, and glad you recovered your count. When I miscount the third time in a session, I take a break, because my ‘counter’ is off. •As you mentioned quilting, I want to find one or two videos I’ve seen recently with interesting machine binding methods, in case that might help your UFOs. Will edit the links in soon. •P.S. To liberate my right-size needles, I have about 20 of those giant kilt-type safety pins to transfer my WIPs too. From experience, I always record the size of the needles and my row in the pattern and attach it to the pin. •It is so fun watching you 🌷knit. Lately I’ve been designing double-knit stitches on a rake-type sock loom, so your videos satisfy my knitting-needle missing 😉.

Love the mittens ❤ I've never knitted mittens or done much colorworks, socks... yes but no mittens. I should add some pretty mittens to my accomplishments, your are gorgeous, even though you made two left mittens. Just make 2 right mittens and you'll have an extra set to keep or gift someone special. 😊

I tried doing my first color work and follow a pattern that I bought, but I didn’t realize that halfway through knitting the hat, that it was child sized. But I’m going to finish it anyway and gift it ❤ I absolutely love the gloves and can’t wait for the whole outfit reveal !

Your selbuvotter came out so nice! And the two-left-mittens-problem is so incredibly common. A lot of Norwegian knitters make sure to always start with the right mitten, so that if they default to just following the pattern for the second one, it will be the correct mitten. :)

Thanks for sharing your beautiful projects. I recently finished my first colorwork mittens. My biggest fear was to knit two of the same mitten.... Which I have done in the past. Good thing you are a crafty one, I'm sure you will get the mitten surgery done in no time!

Last night I also started knitting my second mitten for the same hand, but luckily I noticed it 6 rows into the thumb gusset increases, phew! Good luck if you can correct it with mitten surgery and I hope you document it then, or wishing you lots of knitting courage if you decide to rip back. Would love to see your quilting WIP's. I have one quilting top waiting to be assembled, but it's huge and has been waiting for around 10 years at this point I'm afraid... Perhaps this is the year to participate in Finish it February and not having to sleep in February..

I'm knitting my last sleeve while sitting in a coffee shop and enjoying the rain storm in the Santa Cruz Mountains. I think you are in the Bay Area as well, look what these storms will do for the ski areas! Your ensemble will have plenty of fresh snow to play on.

Selbu mitts were the first knit in 2019 I did (I was soooo inspired by their look) after some 20 years of not knitting. And now I can’t live a day without knitting or crochet. Now you inspired me to create my own pattern! I want it to be Selbu mitts with Ukrainian motive, because I am Ukrainian in Norway :)

Yup! As an avid knitter of mittens I can tell you we do have second mitten syndrome just like the sock people do, but the far more common mistake is to knit two lefties and then kicking yourself when you are trying to knit a rightie to match but that one turns out leftie as well 😂

Gorgeous mittens! I have never knitted the Scandinavian styl mittines, maybe a project for next winter (it is hot summer here in South Africa) I am doing some hand stitch sleeve hemming for a bespoke blazer I am making as a sample for a designer, while watching you knit

you did the same thing I did this xmas 😂 I mean, the mittens I made were a lot less complex than yours, but I managed to make two right mittens. thankfully my mom also wanted a pair of the ones I was making, so I just need to make two left ones instead of any surgery like you 😬 I am not ready for that kind of challenge, that's for sure! but I'm so so interested in seeing how you managed to patch that up :O

I've been working on crochet worry worms (requested by the 10yo's school for wellbeing/MH initiatives) which take nearly no time at all and are fantastic for stash busting in front of terrible TV. Sent a chunky crochet hat to my cousin for Christmas. Mittens look super fun but I only crochet, my stash is mostly DK and I can't find a suitable DK mitten pattern. "and a matching one for my right hand" - uh oh, foreshadowing...

3:48 oh friend it has been a very rough couple of months. My house is just a series of piles of things in every room and it's so overwhelming right now that I don't even know where to start. It really interferes with my creative flow when I feel like I should be cleaning but then it's so overwhelming that I don't clean so I'm not cleaning and I'm not creating and I'm just stuck. So I've decided that I am going to start looking at the variety of Marie Kondo folks out there who have different strategies about how to get control of your space and start testing them out because I would love to get systems working so that I not only have the ability to create time But also the space to do sewing what other kind of art I feel like doing it any given moment. 😂

Do you use 4 instead of 5 knitting needles? I always use 5 when I make mittens or socks. 😊better for my hands🤗

Pretty mittens. What am I doing? I've just started a red cardigan, in a lace a pattern of vines and leaves. it has 24 row repeat and they are all lace, no plain purl rows.

So long as Speedy Crafting doesn't turn to Stressful Crafting. I would rather you post videos after Christmas or not at all, rather than impact your health. Do you think you were concentrating better when chatting to the camera bc you weren't listening to or watching anything in the background? Are you planning to take part in Finish It February? of course, you could skip the knit surgery, make two more RIGHT hand mittens, and then have an extra gift for mom? When you get some projects off your needles, and all. ;)
