I chose waiting for 2 - and I still haven't got even one !!!!! Things not taken into account in this test: (1) in real world there is uncertainty of gains from "above" - matter of trust and predictability (2) A promise can be broken - someone expecting 2 can get none. If that happens take 3 or more yourself.

Well my opinion is that this is true to some extent. Personality isn't fully formed before adolescent age and primar socialisation is great for understanding others, roles etc. hence this behaviour could be learned. Grasping abstract ideas is hard for kids, especially concepts of commitment, sacrifice and time. Even Piaget test shows that young children have trouble differentiating size from number - to them bigger is always more (in number). In this aspect it's marvelous to think about our inner voices too and when they actually internalize. But sure we can say that some children are gifted more than the others. But what I'd like to know is there some sort of determinism, that society shapes up on a certain way or are some moral behaviours objective and above us.

It's still not clear if the marshmellow test predicts success above and beyond socioeconomic status (SES). SES is actually a larger predictor of success. That is, even if you hold off eating the marshmellow, you will not be successful if you started out poor. A key thing to note though, there will always be exceptions but by and large, most (again, not all) poor people in this day and age never get to enjoy success. There's a need to even the playing field for all. However, we should also acknowledge that progress has been made over the years but it's still far from sufficient.

@umdesch4
@umdesch4 6 лет назад
I came here to say this. I know when I was a kid, I didn't get marshmallows (or candy, or junk food) because we were just too poor. I was always hungry. Kids are mean. They'll hold out a handful of candy and say "want some?" only to pull it away yelling "psych!" and then run away laughing hysterically. If somebody had given me a marshmallow, I would have stuffed it in my mouth before the offer turned out to be a scam, or some other kid punched me in the head and took it from me. I still managed to claw my way up out of poverty, have a decent life, and save for rainy days and (hopefully, some day) retirement. But I don't do well at delayed gratification, because that "double or nothing" scenario is a gamble you only take with play money you don't need for survival, and the house almost always wins.
@kstey5872
@kstey5872 6 лет назад
umdesch4 hey i'm happy for you that you climbed out of the poverty cycle! I think it's a great thing!!! Nevertheless, I think on the whole, marshmellow test doesn't really predict success that well. But the thing with such experiments is that we use it to predict general trends. The analogy fails when we talk about single individuals because there are always exceptions and trends don't account for exceptions. Rather it accounts for what is more likely to happen. This is all to say that while I agree with you, I think it's important to prevent yourself from falling into the fallacy of just using your experiences (or those around you) to gauge the validity of any trends. Academics typically call this ecological fallacy.
@umdesch4
@umdesch4 6 лет назад
For sure. I'm just using my own experience as an example, but I've seen a lot of other studies that basically say that in general, someone's parents' socio-economic status bears the highest correlation to theirs. Correlation and causation are tricky to determine, but my intuitive sense is that the marshmallow test is a test of something other than a straight ability to grasp the concept of delayed gratification at an early age. That's far too reductionist. In my situation, given what I knew and understood of the world as a small child, taking the one marshmallow was the winning strategy with the highest likely outcome of success for my survival. Then, of course, there's the question of whether the test is any kind of valid predictor of future success in life, even if only as some kind of correlation. I doubt that too, and as the link you posted above indicates, it seems worth doubting.

Its two different tactics for survival based on environment. A hardwood trees tactic is slow and steady wins the race whereas other trees race up for the light but dont have the longevity of hardwood species. Poor people take the first offer because they have to. The better off people can afford to be more patient. Its very sad to think that class could limit a childs potential in this way. If all families had enough security to teach their children about tomorrow we could all be geniuses.
@KANJICODER
@KANJICODER 3 года назад
I am not certain but I think there is some missing analogy here. Soft wood trees beat the hardwood to the light, and the hardwood dies. First to market or never to market maybe? The correct answer too late is the wrong answer?
@TriggaPleas
@TriggaPleas 3 года назад
@@KANJICODER Your not wrong thats why there are many softwoods and not many hardwood trees...But the oldest or biggest are almost always hardwoods. When I say hardwoods I dont necessarily mean stuff like ebony or teak. Im talking European broadleafs...And Yew trees as well I guess...But softwoods generally cant support their own weight past a certain size and so they rarely make it to the canopy to compete long term. this is just generalisation. You can never know what the child was really thinking. The child who did not want to wait for two marshmallows may have thought that its not worth waiting that much. What you get is just two marshmallows instead of one. The prize should have been bigger at least. You also have to see that very successful people have many exceptions in their lives which makes them unpredictable. If we are to make a generalisation, we can say that greedy or very passionate or extremely motivated people are succesful. You can have a lot of shortcomings, insecurities etc, even impatience might be one of them. But if you are extremely motivated, towards certain goals, you'll overcome everything. You'll be sucessful. Most likeliy. If a car doesn't hit you.

I think the general idea behind it is true because most success requires work, patience, discipline and persistence.Yes maybe a simple marshmallow test won't be enough but doing many kinds of "marshmallow tests" throughout time and I think it'd be more accurate.It''s not everything but I think it's a big part of getting ahead in life.

Completely besides the point of the video, but I started to ponder on the question of whether dogs indeed can't learn to perceive time in terms of days. When the dogs are fed around the same time every day, they learn when they'll have dinner the next day and that asking for food now won't work but they can ask for food again a day later. Our dog started developing some early stage dementia and now, after losing a lot of pillows and balls, he makes sure his favorite pillow is always put back in the same place so he won't lose it. Doesn't that mean dogs do have some sense of future?

As an adult, you realize that the harder you work, the more the state and the government takes from you. Those additional marshmallows you wait patiently for just get taken from you via taxes.

Lets say you take two groups of children, for a month you give one group marshmallow 5 times a day everyday and the other you don't give them marshmallows, which group is more likely to pass the marshmallow test

They should include the kids in the same room, so we can see the instant gratification kids beg for the extra marshmallows from the disciplined ones. Just like adults...

I saw this then called my 7 yr old daughter and asked her the question 1 marshmallow now or 2 in an hr and she chose later... then I asked what if I had the marshmallow in my hand now for u to see. She laughed and said I would of took it lol.. so the mentality to wait for more was there when there was no marshmallow in view but she honestly told me her mind may have changed if she saw it.. lol

Your personality can influence whether you take that marshmallow or you wait a couple hours so you get more, but that does not mean you can’t be trained to wait. Some personalities are more suited to waiting and resisting the temptation of instant gratification, but that does not mean others cannot resist as well. They just need to be trained.
@jayr399
@jayr399 2 года назад
Sorry it can’t be trained. That’s cope. You either got the sauce or you don’t.
@charles5895
@charles5895 2 года назад
@@jayr399 that’s the kind of mindset that sets you up for failure in life. When seeing a objective that seems out of reach in the current moment, you immediately go to the excuse and assume that you can’t do it. With the right mindset and training you can change it slowly but surely, this goes for most skills. The amount of success or skill you have when you are born is PARTLY influenced by your pre-set personality, but the majority of it can be obtained through training.

I was the kind of kid that was afraid of ever taking the marshmallow. Where does that leave me? I’m too afraid to take that marshmallow and take that next step.
