Mastercard is the second largest card network in the U.S., accounting for more than a quarter of all purchase volume using a payment card. As the world transitions to a more cashless society, Mastercard’s value has continued to soar. Shares of the company have seen nearly 100% gain over the past 5 years, outperforming American Express, Discover and even Visa. So how is Mastercard able to generate so much revenue and how does it set itself apart from the rest of its competitors?

The biggest risks MC and V now face is losing the debit portion of their business. 2%++ swipe fees to merchants, which funds reward points and miles to card holders, is an exorbitant charge to process a payment. Merchants are now pushing back with surcharges to pay with a card. Since people are not going to return to paying with cash, alternative systems like Zelle, CashPay, and even the prospect of digital currency will threaten to take away the non-credit (debit) transactions. Time will tell.
@WayningGibbous
@WayningGibbous Год назад
You’re wrong and you’re talking out of your Read MC/Visa shareholder reports. This will not be located on there. Also, the interchange/merchant discount rate is not 2% on debit. Its capped at a MUCH lower rate. For credit, yeah its about 2%. 🤡

From what I've heard, it costs stores more to accept MasterCard as compared to Visa, at least here in Europe. And if I think back some decades ago, I do think there were some places that took Visa but not Mastercard (maybe because of this cost reason, or maybe because they were not as well spread out at that time).
@sblack53
@sblack53 Год назад
It’s typically the opposite in Canada, MasterCard has semi-exclusivity deals with Costco and No Frills, and their interchange fees are typically marginally lower than Visa. That said they have the fewest card offerings among the Big 5, with only BMO offering Debit and BMO and RBC offering credit (and RBC also issues Visa cards). The biggest threat to Visa and MasterCard in Canada though is actually Interac.

In India, we have something called UPI. Using a phone number you can do peer to peer transactions and using a QR code, merchant transactions. It can also be linked to your bank account and also the credit line. Essentially rendering any other method of payment methods irrelevant. Around 70% of digital transactions are now done using UPI and fast gaining market share. Visa and Mastercard as expected, went crying to their government crying foul. And keep in mind, 40% of the global real time transactions are executed in India.

I think you literally just saved my life Leo, I’ve been struggling to find a way out. I’m currently an N.A waiting to get certified because of covid and stuff but I support myself and my grandma. I don’t have anyone to turn to for help, I’ve been trying to save but I can’t because of bills and renting my apartment and everything. But this, literally helped me look to a brighter future. My grandma is crippled so she cannot do work or anything. Most people have parents to turn to but I don’t talk to my mom or dad. This literally helped me so much because since i met *VRI TOKEN* the real issue i have about debt was solve in some weeks am sure before Feb of my birthday i will be home owner.

I used to work for VISA...I can't complain how the company treated me, even after it laid off. But it has a big problem...it is so profit-driven that it did not focus to how to help the small businesses grow...this left the door open for the smaller payment processors. Now they are dividing the market that VISA can't salvage.

For 17 years working at Visa, I saw nothing but a conscious, ethical and fair company!

for some sort of scale context, think of the biggest banks. Visa and Mastercard are bigger than those like a blue whale compared to an orca. WIthout MC, Visa, Amex, China UnionPay, etc, the banks have to have direct contact with all other banks, and to reconcile all transactions by themselves. I am not aware of any bank in such a position, at least Europe-wise.

Visa used to be dominant in Kenya up to around 2010. From there, Mastercard invested a lot in marketing and partnerships. You walk in a bank and by default they give you a Mastercard unless you request for Visa. Somehow, Visa has hardly done anything significant to attract users.

Using both at some point in my lifetime I would say I have had less complaints about missing money from my account with Mastercard as opposed to visa. The security is unmatched. Visa also does reach out to you abroad whenever you perform some outrageous transactions especially if it's a US Bank but mastercard might just go ahead and decline it beforehand since it's unusual. The alerts of mastercard are slow to come in as opposed to visa.
