Saw this amazing man who toured Ireland 12 times & I never missed a tour. I watched the documentary in which a number of Meat's childhood friends talked about him. He was at a Football match, discussing the game with the coach, Meat stood up to go & stood on the Coach's foot. The poor man yelled out, 'you MEAT LOAF son of a gun!' and from that day on, he was no longer known as ML, which was his usual nickname, not liking Marvin. He was just known as Meat Loaf or Meat.
Lol. Exactly. He only explained how he got "Michael" for whatever reason lol. But I assume "Meatloaf" is a play on the word "meat" since he was a chubby kid.

I always thought it was because Marvin Lee was shortened to M.L. and then somebody said it must stand for Meat Loaf, because he was so "big" - and it stuck with him. Children were mean back then. Thankfully, it did not ruin his career. Perhaps quite the contrary.

It's now 2020 and Meat Loaf still ain't mashed potatoes! Although he will not be singing on his 2020 tour I think it will be a great success and interesting to hear the stories he has to share! Caleb Johnson does such an amazing job with the vocals! I don't think anyone who attends will be disappointed!

Awesome to see Michael (who’s name I also love but had to name my son Christopher which his father insisted cause he is a Christian & wanted “Christ “ in his name ). Meat Loaf has told three totally different stories on the question - How did you get your name .? ( Look at the Dan Rather interview ) He's a colorful character, and a good story teller , but he plays fast and loose with the truth .
Well as much as he's been asked the question over the course of his career, I wouldn't blame him for giving different stories. Seems to me he was called Meat for a long time and preferred that to the name Marvin. The point is now, if you're talking about rock singers and you hear the name Meat Loaf, most people know who you're talking about. It probably didn't hurt that when he was starting his career that it was the flower power, hippy, era.
