What happened to Skype?
All of a sudden, video calls have become a part of our daily lives. From university classes and business meetings to birthdays and yoga. Online is the new normal and will be for a while. Fortunately, there are plenty of options: Zoom, Meet, and Microsoft’s own Teams. But, there’s a name that seems to have disappeared. A name, mind you, that no so long ago was the go-to program for video calls.
What happened to Skype? It’s safe to say that, if all of this happened, say, in 2010, we would’ve been Skyping. But now, we’re doing anything but Skyping. What happened? We’ll tell you, in this episode of Company Forensics.

Skype losing it's call stability was the deathnail for the crew I used it with. We would experience all kinds of weird call breaking bugs practically daily. From ghost calls (where there were multiple calls going on in the same group simultaneously) to not being able to leave calls, where the ui accurately updates and says you left the call, but practically you're still calling and interacting through voice. This happening once or twice wouldn't be as bad and just generally funny. The fact that it happened daily however...

Missing the security aspects of the Skype story. Skype was secure, it was driving the international security apparatus crazy. Its distributed nature couldn't be taped. There are rumours that the NSA wrote one of their "letters" to Microsoft instructing them to buy Skype and break the security, make it centralised, with a five eyes backdoor. The fact that MS has managed to pull teams out of the wreckage and make a successful product is the only good thing to come out of this mess. Since then Telegram and signal have risen to fill the security messaging gap left by Skype.

It was also that the courts have ruled that forcing companies to hand over private data requires a warrant. But if a company simply sells you that data, you don't need a warrant. MS sells the data, bypassing the court system. They were guaranteed this revenue source before buying Skype.

You missed to mention a very important feature on old peer to peer-Skype. The privacy of a Skype-call. It was very difficult, to impoosible, to intercept a Skype-conversation because it use of peer to peer-communication, which is very non-interceptable. When Microsoft moved Skype to central servers they changed it's communication protocol from non-interceptable, to very easy interceptable. That's is worth very much in $$$$.

@jaquigreenlees
@jaquigreenlees 3 года назад
Your comment is only valid if you believe the myth of anonymity online. Your isp must keep records of every bit of data transferred, from where to where, in order for their BILLING department to accurately know how much the different plans should be costing. If they have those records, then they know where you go online and what you have been doing. back before unlimited data packages, when we were charged by the MB for use, the billing department had to know how much you used in order to calculate your bill, which means they had to track everything you did online. It hasn't changed.
@gagarinone
@gagarinone 3 года назад
@@jaquigreenlees Yes, you are usually not anonimious online. It seems you haven't read or understood my whole comment. With Skype's old peer-to-peer connections it was nearly impossible to trace Skype-calls. With Microsoft as new owner, Microsoft changed Skype to connect to centralised servers. That is very easy to intercept and log. B.T.W Have you seen any log of a ordinary Internet connection, "of every bit of data transferred, from where to where"? "Everything" can't be logged, all the time. To log endpoint connection is different from measure how many MB's you are using.

It's because they were asked to do a redesign to allow easier hacking by government agencies. That meant the main advantage of Peer to Peer was removed and it depended on their server infrastructure. Plus MS has a system of billing companies to use Office etc routinely. That was the main target that they wanted. After the conversion, they just ripped all the good tech out, renamed it Teams and were off.

However, it was by this time, Nokia had a change of guard and the CEO of that time decided to ignore these countries for fast evolving west. It was monumentously stupid decision. Even though Nokia smartphones sucked ass, my first smartphone, like many other Indians, was Lumia as Nokia had built it’s brand image for 10-12 years as a stable and responsible company. Nokia could have gone android or some other route and gave India a low cost functioning android phone with basic app capability, if the new guy understood the market. While windows phone had appeal for some users with their posh camera and sexy design, Indian user base expected a low cost good battery functioning device. Sadly, now we have Chinese takeover of low-cost market, windows phone is dead and Nokia is donzo.

The competition that killed Skype on the computer side were web based apps like Google Hangouts, which you didn't need to install at all, and came integrated with all gmail accounts. Most people didn't know how to install software back then, and Skype was dependant on that. Really great research!

Microsoft business model in Software is contracts with threats e. g. they manage some governments or big businesses to sign up some exclusive contract so that it cannot buy software from another vendor for the duration of contract which normally many years. Another model is "free" e.g. they come as good guys donating free licenses to education institutions, which result in lock in. Once again. That is not because software is so great that users and businesses love to use it, but because of no choice. And the root is legacy - once Windows penetrated very deeply so it is hard to dismiss it.

There may be another side to this. There is a brief mention of Skype for Business. I had that at work and trying to get it to work with Skype was murderously difficult. I heard that the architecture under the bonnet was completely different for Skype and Skype for Business (which was developed from Office Communicator Lync). Long story short, probably not a good idea to have two products with the same name that don't like talking to each other and another possible reason for the fall of Skype.

Honestly, I've never been a big Skype user, because in the mid 2000s kids and teens preferred MSN Messenger, which also had video calls but had a better chat system, and I remember many people were upset when Messenger was shut down. However I think you missed a couple of Skype competitors in your excellent video: Facebook and more recently Discord. I remember using Facebook a lot for chatting and videocalls since 2011 up to maybe 2018 when I started using Discord. But nonetheless, I had some Job interviews and meetings on Skype during recent lockdowns, some smaller companies still rely on it.

The wacky thing with Skype was its vast amount of features options and hidden gems. We used to start servers with /golive where we could bypass Skype's normal limits. It wasn't a heavy program yet so your computer could run other things along with Skype. The biggest things in my opinion was that you couldn't run Skype and anything else. This ruined it for the gaming communities and friend groups. The options disappeared and the hidden features got locked down. Because it was such a heavy program. And it was always on. Me and my extended friend group of about 300 started looking for alternatives because we wanted to get rid of Skype so our computers didn't die. Now years later Microsoft bought discord and we are already nervously looking around for a new ship to jump up on once Microsoft ruins discord. It already isn't looking too good

@@goff256 Let me clarify that: They officially did not drop support, but effectively skype became unusable on Linux a few years ago. We could no longer see if our Linux users were online reliably. Often if we called them, or they called us, it would just not connect. And it randomly crashed, caused problems with memory usage, and similar issues. They stopped caring and stopped fixing problems or making sure Skype worked on Linux. That's what I mean when I say that they dropped support.

You forgot to mention the malicious ad attacks which infected the Skype home page with malicious ads. I once got an ad that downloaded an visual basic script that asked to update Adobe Flash Player. This was during the time where Discord became a viable competitor where everyone was trying to convince everyone to move from Skype to Discord. This of course succeeded, which you also forgot to mention (you only mention the part where many were using Skype because everyone else they knew used it, not because they liked it). In fact, that was the only thing keeping me from moving: everyone I knew wouldn't move on from Skype.

This really confirmed everything I was thinking. At the start of the pandemic news reporters were still catching themselves saying "Skype" but quickly got on the Zoom bandwagon when it became clear that's what everyone was using. Teams is way too complex for home users and that scares off the non tech folks. They should have kept the Skype name for the (non business) simple to use product. If was part of Teams code under the UI fine but they had the world saying the word Skype for video calls and just let Zoom walk away with that market.

Me and my friends used to use Skype to talk back in 2014 because our TeamSpeak server was down. And it was terrible. Ransom the worst thing was how not everyone on a group chat was able to see there was an ongoing call and were able to call the group chat again. This would cause them to join the existing call and become the new host but the people in the original call would hear the Skype ringtone until the original host would shut down Skype. And this was never fixed in the 6-12 months we used Skype
