We are SOOO excited about this video: we've been working on it for about 3 months and it's by far our best Company Forensics episode yet. In our (usual) spirit of transparency, the production cost for this was about $10,000 and it was an opportunity for us to collaborate with good friends that I had been dying to work with. The story of Apple is an inspiration for many of us entrepreneurs, and we felt that it had to be told in the best possible way. This video is also an experiment as to what our RU-vid channel can become: what if we drastically pivot the production quality of our videos? Can Slidebean Media become a thing of its own? We'll find out Tuesday!
While visually stunning, this video made a marked departure from the typical company forensics series. The video is supposed to be about Microsoft saving Apple, yet Microsoft is mentioned for only about a minute of this video and has very little on specifics. Most of the video comes off as a history of Apple, something the introduction said it was going to avoid.
"How Microsoft saved Apple from Bankruptcy" ** makes a 15 minute video and only dedicates 30 seconds to how Microsoft saved Apple from Bankruptcy ** Sorry, but this isn't really a video about how Microsoft saved Apple from Bankruptcy. It just feels like a fanboi salute to the history of Apple. Also during the nanonseconds that you actually mentioned Microsoft, you totally forgot to mention their commitment to release MS Office on Mac for the next five years, which was an important motivator for Bill Gates to help Apple (all Macs would ship with Microsoft Office for the next five years). Anyway, I'll continue to watch your videos, but this one completely missed the mark IMHO.
what u saying Michael?? the title is different than what u said. You commented almost a year ago but u can still take back ur words by editing it cuz the world will always see this comment. its the internet
@@jdhd0427 Ah yes, it indeed looks like they have changed the title since, likely to be more on par with the content of the video. It does make my original comment look a little odd now, doesn't it? But I'll let it stand. It serves as a reminder that RU-vidrs often use misleading or subjectively incorrect titles, even if they do change them eventually.
Microsoft didn’t rescue Apple. ARM and Adobe did. Settlement with the Microsoft stopped only expensive court case and settled the dispute between the two companies.
Bill owned Jobs once do he just rich enough to fund his pet project with benefit to keep goverment to breke his compnay up like oil company monopoly...
The video is too slow to create a dramatic effect. For me this channel is for accurate information of the corporate world and not a series on Netflix. I've always watched your videos till the end. But this one for me ends at 4:16. Not even waiting for the key takeaways from this story. Giving my honest opinion. Really like your other content though.
I agree as well. The vid was too slow paced and felt more like a Netflix show I have watched not for the first time rather than an in depth accurate analysis. Good job on the production however. Rem Caya and team. Story is key!
Totally agree. If the information is real insights and wisdom from an honest and curious heart, I couldn't care less about visuals. The information, the story, the insights, the pondering is EVERYTHING. Here the visuals took priority over the story, unfortunately. But I'm sure they can bring real pondering insights and story where visuals take a second place in the future.
Agree here as well. I've been a long time subscriber, and I'm not sure the extra production value adds a lot for us, the customers / viewers. I prefer your other videos that are more dynamic. Still, if you consider this as more of a documentary and less of a 'company forensic', it's pretty good! And no matter what, I love the background / blackboard where you can see all of the info at a glance.
3:16 this is actually a bit more complicated than apple needing help, they got that money not because of the Monopoly accusations or because apple was failing or even because Microsoft wanted to expand IE. they got that money due to a settlement over Microsoft plagiarising code from QuickTime in Windows Media player
This story is in the other apple book. Damn I need to find that book. Steve was a hippy loving, sky high, opportunist with a nack for futuristic thinking. Steve's dad (woz) wasn't the biggest fan of Steve. But I need to read the book again. This video is dope! Omg we had the original iMac's at school, the ones with the coloured back.
I really like how the footages were edited. Others wouldn't spend time on these things but yours really stand out because of how they were edited. Good job!
Comment section can sometimes be a bit of a mixed bag. But I can appreciate the honesty of the comments. Great job on the video @caya and the team @slidebean 😊🎉
Interesting video, but covers the same ground that the movie "Revenge of the Nerds" does, which talks about the history of Silicon Valley, Atari, Apple, Intel, Fairchild, and other Silicon Valley companies.
My Dad met John Sculley while supplying equipment contracts for Pepsi. This was quite a while before leaving for apple. Dad's initial reaction to the man was not kind.
I remember when Napster CEO had problem with Metallica and major label after letting free download on his website. He then asked support from Steve Jobs, and soon after it iTunes was released. What a genius. RIP the innovation icon, Steve Jobs. 🙏
What makes Apple different from Microsoft, is that Microsoft was primarily a software company - they made the OS that runs on PCs but didn't make the PC. Also, Steve Jobs didn't allow Macs to be cloned the way the IBM PC was and also Apple does not allow their operating system to be installed on any computer whereas Windows can be installed on any computer. The problem with that is that you don't choice of Macs to choose from like you do on the PC side. Apple also don't allow you to build your own custom Mac where you can can build your own custom PC
Microsoft Office for Mac predates the deal where Microsoft bought $150 million in non-voting Apple stock. The confusion may come from Microsoft having threatened to cancel Microsoft Office for Mac around that time as a result of Apple’s “Yellow Box” strategy that Gil Amelio announced. Once Jobs came back they came up with the “Carbon” strategy which gave developers a more clear path to work with to achieve compatibility with MacOS X while still working on products for MacOS 8.
Same thing with the iPhone, where Google gives out its Android OS to OEMs, Apple does not give out iOS, restricting it to its phone. They also don't make their apps for Android. I don't like their proprietary ways as you don't have the freedoms you have with Android and unfortunately, Tim Cook has not changed anything Apple
"Plan B was BeOS an operative system from a company called Copland"... Wtf? that is just bizarre, Coplan was the Mac OS 8 replacement and BeOs was from a company called Be Inc, a company from a key ex-apple employee
Copland was the codename for Apples doomed attempts to I replace MacOS that failed because of feature creep, bloat and instability. It wasn't the name of the company that made beeOS (that would be Bee). Also its pronounced "cope-land".
I'm really amazed by the production quality of this video. It is really good. However, I feel like the contents of the video and the title don't really match up. If the title is talking about Microsoft, why was Microsoft only mentioned very briefly near the end? I would have just talked about the history very quickly and talk about the Microsoft story much more. I usually really like what your content is about, but I must say I wasn't really feeling this one.
Caya, I want to start my comment off by saying I love your product and what you do. That being said I think Slidebean should stick to its current direction in terms of RU-vid production,. It works. You don’t need to spend $10,000 on fancy animations and production for a single video to tell a compelling story. Your existing production value and quality was already good enough. Success is a grind and you’ll get there. But you’ll go broke before you do if you try and pivot in this more Netflix style quality direction. I hope you don’t take this the wrong way. As you know I live in CR and I want nothing more than to see a CR based creator succeed. Cheers from Guanacaste!
Critique of the video? The sound/image synch is ok but it's got an odd disembodied quality, with the vocal track seeming to be over-dubbed. Distracting, somehow reducing the energy. Mis-pronunciation of words that native English speakers know is wrong is a distraction, like an accent mangling some words beyond recognition. But easy enough to script check pronunciations, and write around accent related word trouble (can you say rural?).
I remember Apple as a company that relies solely on marketing. The only real innovation is the pioneering GUIs. The rest are all marketing. iMac was a complete garbage of a computer there were minimal software design for it that it was almost worthless. Ipod? Overpriced MP3 player that force people to use their software to do something simple as copy a MP3 file. The Iphone is something else and that leads back to the GUI innovation days. It was new and different.
There's a time back I had written an article about targeting your competitors' limitation -- not their weaknesses -- in order to be competitive in the market. I hadn't thought of Apple at the time, but it definitely fits in with that article: Apple focused on closed architecture, a clear limitation (something that the competitors cannot do even if they wanted to) of the existing competitors.
super really like it I am looking forward to watching 50 other stories. It's not the company that fails it the mindset and leadership which can make or break any company. great As I am at the start of my entrepreneur journey this will help me .
Such a good video Caya! I've read this story from books and also I watched the movie and I've never knew that Apple asked for help to other companies (This was shocking but really good to learn some lessons).

I really loved this video! I lived this story starting a multimedia school full of macs years ago. Also I was there at Mac World when Jobs made this announcement in 1998. You told the story in a very interesting way. Thanks goes to Bill Gates for helping to save Apple. Sorry Bill for all those nasty things I said about you years ago. After all I was an Apple Evangelical!
This is an INCREDIBLE video! And the production is beautiful and insane! This is the quality I would expect from a huge channel with millions of subscribers!! I wish you guys all the best and know you will go far
Such a perfect day to publish this (very well done) video... Thanks for making an effort to produce a video like this, mostly for the attention to the little details, even when not everyone will notice them. I recognize very well the collaboration in the 4:25. xD
that was a very well produced video, keep this experiment going, this is your best one yet. I like the way that you used original videos rathre than the downloadable stuff from stock video sites. This definately needs a part 2, 3 and 4. You could of course mention that Pixar was a kind of reverse takeover of Disney, but then that's again another story, You could also mention that one of Jony Ive's last desicions before he left was to ensure that Apple made their glasses AR rather than VR (which I believe to be correct, because VR is a fantasy of the world araound you, whereas AR is an augmentation). Regarding the accuracy, and peoples comments here about it, the story of any history will always have people with their own versions that they've heard somewhere else, and even those that were there will have their own perspective. There's something called the Madnela Effect (well worth a google). All you can do is try to tell the story in a way that inspires people, and this did just that. Of course there will always people saying that there's other sides to the story, because there always is depending on who you talk to. You guys did a wonderful job on the production and scripwriting, and you, Caya, are a great person to present it. You present very affably, no wonder you pitched well and got the investment, you come accross like a friend who knows what the fuck he's talking about. And I loved that beginning bit. Well done, fantastic job, keep this up. And who were you'r collaborators, they deserve a mention
