Funny thing I'd like to point out is in the same weekend over japan there was a huge Pokemon TCG tournament where in a new format, an underrated miraidon deck, went and won the entire tournament.

Miraidon: "How many layers of damage are you on?" Calyrex: "Like, maybe 5 or 6 right now my dude" Miraidon "You are like a little baby. Watch this." *Recreates the big bang with a +50%STAB, +50% electric terrain, +33% hadron engine electric move backed by great SpAtk* (and i forgot terra electric and choice specs)

Who could have thought that using the power of switching made Miraidon OP. This feels like looking at Singles.

Honestly, I'm not surprised in the slightest. Miraidon has been proven to be one of the strongest Pokemon to date since Day 1, and even considering VGC landscapes, it has so many multipliers that a lot of its weaknesses can just be muscled through. In the future, I'm expecting to see a couple more Ground Teras on restricteds, or maybe the rise of Raichu/Pachirisu

Seeing Miraidon win isn’t a surprise for me tbh, I have seen its sheer power in online tournaments so I wasn’t surprised to see it doing well. (I did expect Calyrex-S win so bit surprised on that but seeing Miraidon win wasn’t the most outlandish thing for me.)

It's cool, but it would have been so fitting for Rajan Bal to use Raging Bolt

0:50 One big thing to notice - out of just restricted Pokémon only Miraidon and Terapagos affect the Terrain, which - obviously there are some other Terrain Setters out there, but it is interesting factor when you have Koraidon, Groudon, Kyogre and Terapagos affecting the Weather. And it's notably the one Terrain that has extremely good synergy with Rain. Like Electric mons will always be good in Water/Rain dominated metas. And with Pelipper also being common here - this is just all stacking up for Miraidon. I wonder also how much Rillaboom's nerf was factoring into it, because I probably would expect it being more common in this meta, if Grassy Glide stayed the same power. 3:00 But it does kinda make Calyrex somehow predictable. Just being weak to Wide Guard, creates some openings to defend against it's signature moves, allowing to chip away some damage, with good prediction. Similarly to how Koraidon probably gets partly checked by Rain and Miraidon slows down with its damage output with Rillaboom being present. And obviously Terapagos shuts almost all top restricted Pokemon, with its immunity to Shadow-Caly and Teraform-Zero. 6:00 On the side note - I love how commonly used Farigiraf is used. Very Mega Mawile, Mega Kanga, Pelipper, Torkoal vibe, where seemingly underwhelming forgotten Pokémon becomes usable. In this case we have some presence of good old Girafarig through it's evolution. 6:55 With how uncommon Hazards are these days - you should never overlook any Pokemon that can swap tbh. 7:45 It is nice to see a tournament without Landorus being common in the top.

I'm not stunned, that thing is Tapu Koko and Regieleki on steroids.

not a huge vgc player but you make the topic really interesting and pretty easy to follow as well 💪

I feel like Miraidon is still underrated, even with this showing, because it also has defensive synergy with another Pokemon that used to be a VGC Staple, Iron Hands. Sure, it might struggle against Incineroar, however that's where Miraidon comes in. On top of this, there's one defensive dynamic about this that people aren't considering, their differing speed stats. Because Miraidon is fast and Iron Hands is slow, the opponent has to take into consideration who to go after with their ground type attack. Sure, they can use Earthquake, but there aren't many Pokemon who can Ohko them with their naturally high bulk, then there's the matter of speed. Iron Hands is fast in Trick Room, while Miraidon is fast outside of it, meaning one of them will always be a threat, and Ursaluna, one of the better Ground Type Pokemon right now, doesn't even beat Iron Hands in trick room, at best it speed ties. And this isn't even considering their options for Tera. While Miraidon will almost exclusively go Tera Electric to become a bigger menace to society, Iron Hands is much more difficult to lock down because it has so many functioning Tera Types to use, since it prefers defensive tera types. And simply going "Tera Ground, easy fix" doesn't work either, as Iron Bundle exists too, as you mentioned, and it threatens both Tera Ground and one of the "counters" to Miraidon you mentioned, being Rillaboom. I can totally see Iron Hands, Iron Bundle, Miraidon, and Farigiraf becoming a common core.

Miraidon is truly the king in Singles and doubles. I can't wait to see how great the mon goes.

I think ppl are gonna respect Miraidon more, and this will put it on its proper place upon players’ perceptions. Imo, Ting-Lu is gonna rise, because of it’s excellent matchup against Miraidon, Calyrex-S, and even Terapagos due to it’s enormous special bulk. Meanwhile, I believe Koraidon will rise, as it having what is essentially 3 stab options without the need to Tera for that is incredible. Add on to that the variety in sets and itens Korai can use, from Sash, to Clear Amulet, to Scarf, to AV, and perhaps even Covert Cloak, and I think Koraidon is gonna dominate later stages of Reg G

As a Gen 9 Balanced Hackmons player, one of the few things I try to do is make sure that the pokemon I'm using has a different ability than it's supposed to have. In my mind, if I have to use an ability that originally came on the pokemon (as long as that ability isn't banned), I'm better off using another pokemon. Miraidon was the first pokemon that took that formula and broke it in half. Still to this day it blows my mind that the only thing you have to do to base Miraidon to make it broken in BH is give it Rising Voltage. The ability was banned mostly for that reason (and Tera too to some extent).

During the first preview of Rajans Team I remember thinking to myself „this team might be the one to win the whole thing. It’s a very good anti-meta call“. Watching Aaron and Wolfe have fun while commentating added a lot to that matchup, and I immediately had my favorite for the tournament, rooting for him whenever he came up on stream. I’m also very happy that the first tournament of Reg G didn’t even have a Cali form in the finals. This might help with ensuring variety in the rest of the format.

I remember building a similar team in reg F that was Raging Bolt Sun centered instead of Miraidon e terrain centered. You'd be surprised how many double kills protosynthesis boosted tera electric magnet discharge gets.

I think its so cool how there's this whole meta since the beginning of SV, with stuff like Flutter Mane, Ogerpon later and even Urshifu-R after that that you can 100% count on them to be in 100% of tournaments, but the strats that keep having the best performance are stuff like FUCK IT WE ICE STAB Articuno and the "oh no they have a ground type" Miraidon, which funnily enough, works because they usually don't have a ground type (F Ting lu) That really showcases the beauty of competitive pokémon, which is heavily defined by a very strict, and after some time, pretty laid out meta, yet upsets like this can and will happen, not only on current metas but on old metas as well. People out here saying GAME FREAK can't balance the game but honestly, they're just missing the best part of competitive pokémon.

There are even times when knocking your opponent out with Discharge can work to your favor. So when you fully understand how to use it, there really aren’t any downsides.

Something that should be pointed out on Whims' encore was during Rajan's semis game, he stalled out and KO'd Raging Bolt cause of thunderclap and protect encore

something i'm curious about is whether miraidon could bring iron hands back into the meta. it's main weakness was that it basically didn't have an ability, so it was objectively worse than incineroar in every way, but being an electric type with quark drive gives it a nasty damage output so i think it could work as a highly aggressive fake out user on offensive teams (you could maybe run it slow as a trick room sweeper). terrain + quark drive boosted stab wild charge from adamant iron hands is pretty terrifying

I’m a little surprised that Zacian hasn’t taken off yet. Given it’s great typing, move pool, and stats, it seems like a good anti-meta threat. I wonder if Lightning Rod Raichu will make a return to the meta just as a means of dealing with Miraidon? Between Fake Out, Nuzzle, and its other status moves, it’s a great support mon. And Tera Fairy would make it immune to both of Miraidon’s stabs. Togedemaru might also be a decent option. And maybe something like Assault Vest Groudon will rise in usage? It would pair up well with mons like Flutter Mane and Roaring Moon if those still get any usage? We’ll just have to see how things play out.
