Sure it's a win. If you think you can get a college education (4-year degree) in 11 weeks (same compression.) This would be like trying to get a good understanding of current events from a bunch of sound bites. This is a excellent *introduction.* But it should be followed by branched learning. Even Cliff's Notes would be better. Or at least a link to the rest of the presentation. I want to know how it works so I can understand the nanotech and biotech explanations for how respirocytes work. Maybe even have an idea of my own. While there are ways that are faster than others, and ways that are more accurate than others, there are no shortcuts to knowledge. We're still running on organic substrates.

Here's my favourite pub fact: ATP is 'synthesised' by phosphorylation of ADP. ATP is 'burned' by cells to form ADP, which is then converted back into ATP by phosphorylation. In the circular form/ burn/ form processes, the mitochondria of our body synthesis around 74kg of ATP every day. 74kg. Wow.
@bethyngalw
@bethyngalw 2 года назад
sigh. I wish my body synthesised that much ATP a day. That would be awesome. Spare a thought to people with ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) whose mitochondria are dysfunctional and therefore don't produce enough ATP for everyday muscle function.

Mitochodria are one of the biggest mysteries/miracles of nature. They are said to originally have been independent organisms, primitivw bacteria perhaps, swallowed by another larger bacteria, but instead of being eaten, the mitochondria entered a symbiotic relationship with its predator, thus giving a birth to a more complex cells. When cells reproduce by splitting, the mitochondria undergo a very similar process by themselves. A truly fascinating stuff, which also paved the way to multicellular organisms.

Are you serious, @Max? There are far too many multi-component molecular machines, especially in the mitochondria, to believe that. Once one complex component evolved, natural selection *can't* look ahead and know to conserve it until the other components evolved. Besides, the math about proteins rules out origin by evolution. Life was designed. No doubt.

@@KenJackson_US You miss the detail that all of this evolved over _billions_ of years. That is an unimaginable timescale. If there's a god, then it makes a lot more sense that that god designed the fundamental laws of the universe, since out of those, such complexity can arise. Why waste time micro-engineering all those details when you can "just" come up with clever enough fundamental laws, start the whole thing, and let it grow on its own? In other words - if god exists, then it would make a ton more sense that god designed the universe to procedurally generate everything.
@KenJackson_US
@KenJackson_US 2 года назад
@@dvdv7777: _"... evolved over billions of years. That is an unimaginable timescale."_ Have you done any math? Or are you just wowed by the word _"billion"?_ A billion is _only_ 10^9 (ten to the 9 power). But consider a small protein, a chain of only 100 amino acids. There are 10^130 possible combinations. That's over *a trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion* combinations! For a small protein. It gets much much much worse for larger proteins. How could evolution find a single needed functional protein in only a few billion years? Utterly impossible!

there is often severe muscle wasting in people with cancer. one theory is called: Nuclear Meltdown, and it concerns mitochondria degradation. Michael Wiggs and his crew made a mouse model with implanted cancer cells and monitored the health of the mouse and many indications for four weeks, which is when the mice would be euthanized so they didn't die from the cancer. many of the indicators they monitored did NOT show a steady degradation, but instead would show minor degradation for the first three weeks, and then a LOT of degradation in the fourth week, and the mouse would be near death. But, when they monitored mitochondrial function, they noticed it degraded in a stepping stone fashion. this indicates that mitochondria show early changes we can investigate to see if we can intervene in the degradation process before severe muscle loss becomes deadly.

More like the refinery of the cell. Think of how we turn crude oil (sludge) into gasoline. The mitochondria turn NADH into ATP.

We get our mitochondria from our mothers because it's impossible to get it from our fathers. An egg cell has dozens of mitochondria cells but the mitochondria in sperm is located on the tail, to provide sperm the energy to swim towards the egg. If I recall correctly, sperm has only few mitochondria cells, if that.

Here's a webpage which details some of how these things are figured out. Some of it *can* be seen through a microscope, "...Time-lapse microcinematography of living cells..." , and "Mitochondria are large enough to be seen in the light microscope, and they were first identified during the nineteenth century...", and, "Biochemical fractionation of purified mitochondria into separate components. These techniques have made it possible to study the different proteins in each mitochondrial compartment", all from "Molecular Biology of the Cell", a past edition free textbook: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK26894/
