You need to cook it with some lime juice and it will get rid of that catch in your throat.

They make you itchy is right! I used to volunteer at a local botanical gardens and would do a segment on my snap stories every week called ‘how squishy is it’. Each week, I’d find a giant elephant ear with a spent leaf and petiole that was ready to be pulled off with ease and composted and squeeze it on camera to see how squishy it was. I’m a plant person; I know plant things; I don’t know why this never occurred to me, though…one week, I got a particularly squishy piece of elephant ear and squeezed it on camera. It was so so wet and the muck ran through my fingers and down my forearm and I was immediately on fire! The oxalic acid was so so bad! I wasn’t about to let anyone I worked with know what a dumb ass I’d been, so I calmly excused myself to the bathroom and scrubbed my whole arm down with dawn dish liquid til the fire became a constant itch and muscled through the rest of my shift, unwilling to let on what a stupid thing I’d done 😂

I have eaten the petiole chopped and cooked Nepalese style, so good. Also the tuber is eaten like a potato 🥔.

The thai giant or colocasia gigantea has massive leaves that looks like the edible one. Are those also edible? It has all the characteristics of the edible ones but the guy at the nursery told me that it's not edible but google says it is. So confusing 😕

Can you be able also, eat the bulbs ?
@SticksWithPicks
@SticksWithPicks 4 месяца назад
Yes, the bulbs are Taro which you can buy in many asian supermarkets. But make VERY sure you have an edible one, so you don't poison yourself. Don't just believe a random RU-vid short or comment. 😉 If you ever find a Taro with plump eyes [buds] in the supermarket you can plant them to grow a Colocasia plant and grow more taro [similar to growing potatoes or ginger] if you live in a warm climate or have a big greenhouse. But often the roots are treated with an anti-sprouting agent or have dried up too much, so they won't grow.

How can the little leaf be poisonous ma'am? I'm Sri Lankan and we eat all. we are still living . I asked my Grandma to make sure , she confirmed that we eat all those leaves. So I think you guys can just check it out a bit more..

Never knew some are edible! What do they taste like???
@ooxsecretxoo
@ooxsecretxoo 6 месяцев назад
They don't really have a flavor on their own. They're like sponges that suck up the broth that they're cooked in.

Taro is NOT an Elephant Ear. Only Xanthosoma sagittifolium is an Elephant Ear. Elephant Ears will kill you.

They are all of the same plant, younger ones should be avoided because they'll cause itch in mouth.
