In recent times, we have witnessed two very different outcomes from attacks on two frontline warships - Russian Moskva and American USS Carney.
In the late hours of 13 April 2022 Ukrainian presidential adviser Oleksiy Arestovych reported Moskva was on fire andOdesa governor Maksym Marchenko said their forces hit Russian BlackSea Fleet ship with two R-360 Neptune anti-ship missiles.
A radar image showed the ship was about 80 nautical miles (150 km) south of Odesa around 19:00 local time (GMT+3), shortly after the damage occurred. Two reports indicated the ship sank before 03:00, 14 April.
In late May, USS Carney (DDG-64) returned home after a seven-month deployment. During the deployment, the ship first sailed with the Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group, which entered the Eastern Mediterranean following the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks in Southern Israel and then entered the Red Sea with the Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group.
USS Carney had 51 total engagements with Houthi missiles and drones during its time in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden and is now considered one of the world’s most battle-hardened warship.
In this video, Defense Updates analyzes how Moskva couldn’t do defend itself but USS Carney dealt with threats like a pro?

Also has Nulka a Australian invention of a decoy rocket that fires by AI or manual when detects a incoming threat, it gives off a radar signature larger then the ship thus confusing the missile to hit it instead of the ship, first time used in anger was in 2016 when Houthis fired a Chinese missile at USS Mason and 2 other Destroyers, some media say the missile malfunctioned and crashed in to the sea, while one's who know said Nulka did it's job Nulka is fitted to all Arleigh Burke destroyers, LHD and Aircraft carriers of USA, Canadian and Australian war ships also. Why USA not to concerned about Chinese hypersonic anti ship missiles China brags about. China has not got this defense system so can't brag it can easily hit a US ship, no matter how many mock tests they do.. Why i doubt USS Eisnehower was ever hit either and why is no clear footage of it.. Nulka is even in the American tv show called. The Last Ship season 4 they deploy it, but it does not do what they say it does. Nulka is Aboriginal meaning, Be Quick...

Its simple , the Slava class cruisers followed the Russian concept of giant missile carriers with high offensive capabilities They packed in so much weapons for offense, they left little room for defensive weapons Combined with the fact that ships sensors were antiquated and the obsolescence of the Russian navy its no wonder that the Black Sea Fleet has been Ukraine's punching bag

The Slava class cruisers were air defense cruisers. They were intended to provide fleet area defense with S300F missiles for long range, OSA-M missiles for short ranges and CIWS for point defense. Any on eof the system should have easily handles just two subsonic cruise missiles. Something had to have gone seriously wrong for a measily two missiles to have sunk the ship. For the Moskva it was probably a combination of things. Cuz weather didn't even seem bad. I think reasons were: - crew not alert, not trained well of not expecting. 2. smart ukranians that used drone with EW to distract the ship (radar) 3. sea skimming missiles that are only detected late. Not sure if only 2 missiles were launched & hit, reprotedly no more missiles were fired. Like w/ all rus weapons, only great on paper. I think the maintenance was also outdated for some part, forgot details. This has been simulated in computer games too which is very interesting. Mostly the missiles were still intercepted unless the weather was bad.

An analysis done by USNI on April 13, 2024 states that "The review of images following the strike of the two Neptune anti-ship missiles from open-source naval analyst and retired Navy Capt. Chris Carlson told USNI News that the guided-missile cruiser did not have its fire control radars activated and could not see the threat from the two sea skimming weapons. In the photo of Moskva after the strike, the radars “are in their normal stowed position”. The OSA-M directors also appear stowed in the images. Ukraine used effective environmental factors and proper offensive jamming to conduct the attack.

The ChiComms have to be privately quite annoyed with the Houthis. Although their weapons shot at US ships probably aren’t as sophisticated as what the Chinese have, until now no navy has had to deal with such weapons in an actual combat situation. In reality, what matter is the ability of the Carney to detect antiship missile with its excellent AN/SPY-1D and AN/SPQ-9B radars. Furthermore, Carney does not have huge antiship missiles sitting on the deck in multiple launchers which if hit, would cause many missiles to explode consecutively causing huge fire that sinks the ship like the Moskva. So had Carney been hit by even 2 missiles, it probably would survive. The fire control system on Carney is highly integrated, which provide fast response time for defense. Arleigh Burke class destroyers had been hit by suicide boat and a larger commercial ship yet did not sink. Even the smaller American Oliver Hazard Perry frigate had been hit by sea skimming missile and mine an did not sink, clearly showing the effectiveness of their ship design. The Moskva huge 3D Top-pair radar rotated much more slowly and it is unclear how good it is at detecting sea skimming small missiles in sea clutter. It is also unclear how reliable are these radars and how good is the fire control system and how well train is the crew. It did not seem that Moskva even detected the 2 antiship missiles. The huge antiship missiles mounted on its deck made it an inferno once those were hit by the Ukrainian missiles. That plus the obvious top-heavy design ensure a very poor outcome eventhough it is a large ship.

If incoming vampires have LPI seekers the possibility of being hit could significantly increase including US warships. Houthi missiles were instantly detected by SLQ/SEWIP once their seekers activated, which left enough engaging time for CIC operators. When LPI seekers detect targets vampires will further drop to much lower altitude, leaving shipborne radar shorter detection range.
@vzzzb2vzzzb124
@vzzzb2vzzzb124 2 месяца назад
@@kentony7672 for a subsonic vampire flying at around 600 miles per hour at 60 feet above sea level, the detection time is approximately 1 minute using the Carney's radar. However, as you said, the vampire will have to turn on its seeker in search mode at longer range because of the imprecision range of the target. this probably does allow the Carey's EW suite to detect its emission at somewhat longer range, despite the radar horizon. Of course, everything we say is speculation. Only the US Navy knows the truth about its capability. The bottom line is that the missiles are detected and taken care of reliably by the US Arleigh Burke class ships.

From what I've heard, the answer is weapons on US ships are manned and maintained in an operational state 24/7. Russia can't even manage to accomplish that much in an active combat zone. So much easier to shoot down incoming missiles when you don't have to search for the guys onboard who operate the defenses and drag the all away from bed, meals, the latrine, etc.

I believe this to be the most likely scenario being played out: US weapons, sensors and platforms both sea and air, are about 3 decades ahead of Russia's abilities and 1 to 2 decades ahead of the Chinese. Now think about this, when the next World War breaks out, likely soon, the US will then be deploying many new technologies that the Russians and Chinese will have no chance of contending with. Think about the UAP's you hear so much about from the Naval Aviators and radar operators on ships that have talked about them. These UAP's were developed and built by DARPA, they've not been talked about except for the last few years. These UAP's have propulsion systems based upon DARPA breakthroughs in the realms of gravitational and electromagnetic propulsion systems. They are being allowed to be talked about now in the hopes that our enemies will be deterred from starting another major war against the West, knowing we have this technology which would render all of their military obsolete the second they're used on the battlefield. Just as an FYI I base this prognostication about our new technology upon the persistent rumors I heard back in the late 1990's and early 2000's when I had a TS-SCI and worked at a secure facility in San Diego and later when I worked as a technical Tiger Team lead at AIRPAC. The most persistent rumors we heard about DARPA was that they had made huge breakthroughs in the miniaturization of Laser systems, and in the area of gravitational and electromagnetic propulsion. When I saw the first video from the Navy (Cmdr Fraver I think was the pilot) showing the TIc Tac UAP, the DARPA rumor was the first thing I thought of because an engineer once explained how that type of propulsion would work and how aircraft equipped with it would behave; and what he explained was exactly what I saw in those UAP videos.

The primary difference between these ships is simple. Crew morale, training, expertise and motivation are crucial factors. Moskva had been underway for how long? Ukraine had not used, such missiles early in the ship's deployment. Rather the Moskva's crew had time to fall into a routine of nothing much matters, nothing much happens. Only then, when two high performance missiles were fired. The ships defenses, were caught unprepared to defend the ship. Offline, unmanned, or poorly maintained makes, little difference. Moskva is a excellent example of why the mostly missile armed ships are fast becoming obsolete. Hits cause a fire fighting nightmare. Solid fuel missiles are very impressive in the air. Below decks, every part of the missile burns extremely well. Being nearly impossible to put out. So? A ship full of missiles burns out, or explodes at sea. This is far from the only reason mostly missile armed ships are going obsolete. The second is low cost drones can soon deplete the onboard supply of missiles. Leaving the ship, nearly defenseless from incoming missiles. At first glance, USS Zumwalt seems like a solution for some of these problems. Until one learns that the ship's 155mm guns were shackled to firing only 1 type of round. A rocket assisted guided munition. Little different than a missile in cost. Ships need multi purpose guns for a variety of reasons. Amphibious gunfire support is just one mission. Laser guided guns can be used for point defense. Energy weapons are an option. Until one considers the fuel needed to generate the power to operate them. An energy weapon equipped ship won't be very practical at sea, until fusion powered ships become available. Accordingly in addition to missiles at least two types of multipurpose guns are needed at sea. Weapons in the 40mm to 100mm range primarily for point defense. Weapons in the 140mm to 210mm range for longer range missions. Guns that can also be used against low cost armed drones. Such weapons should all be of at least 60 caliber barrel length.

Several years ago, when a US Arleigh Burke was in the Black Sea for the Sea Breeze exercises with Ukraine, Anatoly Nogovitsin, a Russian propagandist, remarked that the Moskva could sink every enemy ship in the Black Sea with a single volley. Lol. Ole Nogo. Its too bad he wasn't around to get his heart broken. I did 6 years as a cryptologist in the US Navy breaking Russian encryptions. I can tell you with certainty they are nowhere close to our level. Remenber, the USS Lake Erie, a Ticonderoga, shot down a satellite. The satellite was traveling around 17,000 mph and tumbling on 3 axis'. The Aegis system not only had to hit the satellite, it had to hit it IN THE FUEL TANK in order to destroy the hydrazine fuel which is very hazardous. They used a modified Standard Missile and they modified the Aegis system and the AN SPY aboard the Lake Erie. Just imagine how complicated and intricate it would be to hit a satellite in a specific area that's traveling faster than a ballistic missile in it's midcourse phase and tumbling on 3 axis'. Not only that, an F15 shot down a satellite in 1985. The F15--undefeated in dog fights. Undefeated as in 104-0 undefeated. Thats 104 Russian planes burned without a single loss of an F15.
