Lockheed Martin has test-fired a Patriot PAC-3 MSE interceptor from a Mk 70-series containerized launcher and used it to down a mock cruise missile.
A modular and scalable version of the company's combat-proven Aegis Combat System called the Virtualized Aegis Weapon System, was used to execute the launch.
This has the potential to be a game changer since this combination offers a valuable additional air and missile defense option for use in a slew of existing and future launchers, and not just on ships.
In this video, Defense Updates analyzes why the test-fire of an Patriot PAC-3 MSE interceptor from an Mk 70 launcher is a crucial development?

it is a big development. you can quad pack it. it quadruples the number of low-altitude interceptors stored in those VLS spots.

I have been loosely following the Mk.41 configuration of the Patriot Advanced Capability 3 Missile Segment Enhancement program for the last few years. I am surprised to hear you say the PAC-3s can be quad packed. There was some talk last year that the PAC 3 missiles could be dual-packed into a single Mk.41 cell. As of four days ago, according to Lockheed Martin officials, the vertical launch system PAC-3 MSE cannister will contain one missile and can fit across all Mk.41 systems. I'd like to see your reference link for quad packing.

They could try adopting BAE's adaptive deck launchers ADL. So that PAC-3s and PAC-3 MSEs can replace the ESSMs on the VLS while the ESSMs will be transfered to the ADLs. This could make Burke into a cruiser in terms of VLS count. Best of all ADLs can be reloaded at sea.

It is advantageous to have extra types of interceptor missiles being able to fired out of the MK 41 VLS guided by the Aegies combat system, particularly if the various types of munitions are in limited supply.

Each branches has its own needs The USN needs missiles to protect it ships from missiles and aircraft. Those missiles need long range ,data links and decent size warhead The US Army relies on the USAF to protect its bases from aircraft , the Patriot is for missile defense for the US Army The USAF relies on the US Army to protect its bases from missile attacks while the USAF deal with aircraft in the air at long range The USMC need defenses that are as mobile as they are , its possible to make a common missile but like the F-35 program Each missile would optimize for each service needs

All solid fuel rockets take a while to make as the rocket fuel chemicals take a while to cure and set into a solid block. And the larger the diameter of the rocket the longer it takes to set that is why smaller rockets and bombs take a fairly short time to make, and the larger and that would be a wider diameter (for rockets, that means the ones that travel longer) automatically take a longer while to make. Then there is testing a sample out of each batch for quality and verification testing. So in the end, a rifle bullet may take less than. a second to make vs several weeks to make a single anti-air rocket. And in case you wonder why they can make over 500 Patriots per year it's because it's a smaller diameter rockets and thus the other reason why they can pack 4 in a VLS container

and fyi, while liquid fuel rockets mas much more power and can travel much further, it is a huge cost and chore to store, and handle all those dangerous liquid chemicals and then fuelling up those rockets for launch. Solid-fuelled rockets took a long time to perfect and is still an ongoing process. See also the development of air-to-air rockets and the next generation AARAM missiles which must still conform to a certain diameter, weight and length, scientists are still trying to formulate a powerful solid fuel motor, that is powerful and energetic enough to push it to even higher and faster speeds without it blowing up. These aren't the things you buy and light off in your backyard for July 4 for fun,

Our Patriot is not overhyped but functions satisfactorily. The S-400 is a very ineffective system. Basically a rebranded Soviet system from the 80s. We have observed that it is limited. The Russian aerial denial ability, as is the CCP’s, is very questionable.

Lockheed needs to do much better than increasing production by 30% in the next three years. With the increased demand from replacing missiles sent to Ukraine and thousands more missiles ordered by new and existing customers, they could probably double capacity and still fall short of demand.

I am shocked, but not surprised that the USA is only increasing its production of Patriot missiles from 500 to 650. Nor am I surprised it would take our defense contractors three years to increase by that small amount. As Winston Churchill said to Congress in an address, he hopes America will be forever prepared- because they will never again be the isolated "Arsenal of Democracy" that they were in WW2...

They need to make a missile boat holding thousands of missiles that is autonomous with minimal crew, data linked to the destroyers and aircraft carriers this way during a conflict they can use the missile boat for defensive and offensive measures, just make 50 of these missile boats keep the crew at 50 and then just have them during the conflict they just rotate them out, they would definitely have to be one of the faster boats though. Still better than trying to load a destroyer at sea and faster
@Blackreaper95
@Blackreaper95 5 месяцев назад
Problem with that is Destroyers do that and more and would cost less, a missile boat with hundreds of missiles would need the vls cells to fire them all, it would have to be much larger than a destroyer and have more crew to maintain the ship and it's automated systems.
@DirkDiggler-qp3vm

Search it the Americans have tested it by reloading at seas. And they have been successful every time. Obviously they have some details to work out but that would be a game changer to reload at sea.

This idea is called an arsenal ship. Those would be very high priority targets and, if you lose one, you lose all of the multi-million dollar missiles on it. That said, maybe it's a good idea if done right.
@verdebusterAP
@verdebusterAP 5 месяцев назад
That missile boat concept isnt feasibe The only concept that would actually work is the LPD-17 class mod as BMD ship As they are using the LPD-17, the cost would be less than making a completely new ship The LPD-17 size would allow it to accommodate the MK-41 for self defense, the larger MK-57 for bigger missiles, and the MAC system for hypersonic weapons Additionally defensively, the ship can also accommodate various laser weapons as well standard 5 inch guns The space that was once for cargo can additional generators for weapons and sensors as well space for larger computing power Imagine being able to use the cargo hold for massive super computer Processing power has always been a problem but with ship that size it wouldnt be
