To make a movie feel as realistic as possible you have to have the right props. And there are numerous super specialized props that require a broad range of expertise behind the scenes, from paper bags that don’t make a sound on set and broken glass that won’t harm an actor to fake blood and vomit. Here’s a look at 13 you may not have known about and how they are made.

It’s things like this that pulls me towards a career in film. This is utterly fascinating, moreso when you realize that every sound they take out has to be replaced by foley artists. Pool ball clinks? A foley artist at an old pool table just banging pool balls together. Same thing with the paper bags, shattered glass. Directors get all the credit but foley and props carry so much of a film and create the ability for the audience to be able to suspend disbelief as they watch the film. A movie requires so many moving parts all moving precisely the right way to be the least bit successful. I love this stuff!

You guys know you don't actually need any of these things, right?
@drdelewded
@drdelewded Год назад
We don't use as much foley nowadays.. we have access to HUGE SFX libraries where we can just grab the sounds from. Now, if its a major film with a stupid budget for post.. maybe. But for most things that require audio replacement we just grab a file. (Im a post sound audio engineer in TV since 2001)

@@drdelewded what are the most in demand jobs on movie/tv show sets? I’m going to do more research on this online but it’d be helpful to hear it from someone that works in the field

@@johnstrawb3521have you seen the difference between a college kid's film project vs a professional movie? The sound is a dead giveaway. It's just like the example they gave in the video with Melissa Mccarthy holding the bags. You can barely hear her over the bags.
@Superbustr
@Superbustr Месяц назад
Just don't. Really. All the public sees are fancy highlight reels that glamourise film and tv. The reality is that the majority of film and tv jobs are poorly paid with what would be considered abusive work hours in other fields. Directors get a lot of credit because a lot of the time films or programs just wouldn't be made at all if it was not for the director.

I worked as a graphic designer for a community college. Once the theatre department were performing “A Christmas Story” and needed boxes of Red Ryder BB Gun for a store display. I made the artwork to cover the boxes using original photos as a guide. It was a lot of fun to create & lend realism to the production.

This was incredibly interesting. I always enjoyed seeing how movies are made especially the effects in it's many forms. There was tv show ( I can't remember it's name) that showed how FX (practical) was done in movies. Before the prolific use of CGI. With my love for film one of sons decided to be a writer and director of movies. Even going to college for it.

The people who make the clothes say "That dress was its own character in the film." The people who make up the houses say "The house was its own character in the film." The people who prepare the food are like "That feast was its own character in the film." The people who prepare the vehicles "That car was its own character in the film." The 1984 movie "To live and die in LA" had a plotline that revolved two secret service agents and Willem Defoe as a master counterfeiter. William Friedken directed and he said they hired a genuine counterfeiter as adviser on the film and just did what he said! They bought all the proper machinery, filmed their counterfeiting scenes without even notifying the real SS and just took their chances. Friedken said a large quantity of the counterefeited money vanished from the set -

I'm not sure it was really explained-if so I apologize-but they generally only want to capture dialogue during filming and want ambient noise at a bare minimum. Extra is restaurant scenes only pretend to talk for example. Then they add the ambient noise back in after filming controlling the levels. That's why they want zero noise props.

I love stuff like this, although it does just give me a laundry list of things to point out when some idiot claims that some TV show or movie they saw was "realistic", especially the censor-marms that wring their hands about how audiences are being 'desensitized'. If they're being desensitized, it wouldn't even matter because the stuff they're no longer sensitive was never real in the first place! So many people have profoundly dysfunctional ideas about media and fiction.
