The Hussars, the elite cavalry of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, were not only a symbol of military power but also a sign of prestige and wealth. Serving in the Hussars entailed high equipment costs, but it also provided significant earnings that allowed the Hussars to maintain a high standard of living. This article will explore exactly how much an average Hussar earned for his battlefield contributions and what additional material benefits were associated with their service.
During the Golden Age of the Hussars, in the XVII century, the earnings of the Hussars varied depending on their rank, participation in battles, and victories. An average Hussar could expect to earn about thirty Polish zlotys for participating in a single battle, which translates to approximately twelve thousand zlotys in today’s money. In addition to this base salary, the Hussars often received allowances for equipment and bonuses for special achievements. The funds for purchasing armor, lances, horses, and other weaponry mostly came from the Hussars' own resources; however, in exceptional circumstances, they could count on financial support from the king, hetman, or wealthy magnates.
The Hussars also had the opportunity to acquire war spoils, which could significantly exceed their regular earnings. These were most often valuable horses, opponents' armor, weapons, and also valuables such as gold chains and rings. The value of such spoils could amount to several dozen Polish zlotys, corresponding to today's several thousand zlotys. Additionally, for their merits, Hussars could receive promotions and land grants, which were not only a sign of prestige but also provided significant material benefits.
Thanks to their earnings and spoils, a Hussar could afford to purchase many goods and services. For example, for thirty Polish zlotys, he could buy a year's supply of fuel, a set of elegant clothes, several valuable books, or even pay a peasant to work on his land for several months. Despite the high costs of service, Hussars, thanks to their earnings and war spoils, were able to lead a high-level life befitting their status as the military elite of the Commonwealth.

Ciekawy film. Natomiast kopia była wyposażeniem które zapewniało Państwo. A rotmistrz był odpowiedzialny za dostarczenie ich do swojej chorągwi. To była zasadnicza różnica w przeciwieństwie do pozostałego wyposażenia. Pozdrawiam

Fakt, za te pieniądze mogli sobie pozwolić na wiele, ale krocie kosztowało także szkolenie i wyposażenie konia bojowego. Więc były i lata dobre i takie w których husarz musiał "dokładać".
