How Much Difference Do Turkey Chokes Make - TESTED | Carlson's Full vs. Turkey

Turkey hunting chokes are designed to increase pattern density at long range, but are they that much better than regular full chokes? This video tests a Carlson's extended ported sporting clays choke against a Carlson's extended turkey choke with four different kinds of turkey ammo to see what the average gain is when using the turkey choke. Please keep in mind every choke/gun/ammo combination will perform differently, the same combinations tested here may perform better or worse for you. ALWAYS TEST your ammo and choke tube before hunting.
Choke Tubes Tested:
• Carlson's Turkey Choke 0.670 Constriction -amzn.to/3D9uJ5P
• Carlson's Sporting Clays Choke Full 0.700 - amzn.to/3ID30M6

In this video I test these shotgun shells:
• Winchester Long Beard XR, 12 gauge, #4, 1.75oz, 1200 fps
• Winchester Super X Turkey, 12 gauge, #4, 1.875oz, 1210 fps
• Remington Nitro Turkey, 12 gauge, #5, 1.875oz, 1210 fps
• Fiocchi Golden Pheasant, 12 gauge, #6, 1.75oz, 1200 fps
Using these same loads I found some patterned better with a Carlson's Longbeard XR choke at .660 constriction than with the turkey church tested. But some loads also patterned worse with the .660 choke. The bottom line is that you MUST test your shotgun shells with your choke tube(s) until you find a good combination for turkey hunting. Always pattern test on paper before hunting. Special thanks to Carlson's for providing these chokes to test.

Good job. Keep in mind, the Long Beard XR ammo does not have the weight in shot per the amount listed on the box. The weight on the box includes the resin. 3 1/2" shells have 1 3/4 oz shot, and if I remember right, the 1 3/4 oz are either 1 1/2 or 1 5/8 oz of shot. Been a long time since I tore one apart. One of my best reloads is 1 3/4 oz with #5 shot through a modified choke in my 870.

@Joshua Lowe The Grand Slams use a very teeny tiny plastic pellet for buffer, and only part of the shell is filled with it. The buffer is not part of the posted weight. I get this from the ones I have taken apart and weighed.
@bgdesignandsolutions
@bgdesignandsolutions 2 года назад
@@TheNewHuntersGuide I hope you didn't think I was implying you were wrong about anything, because I wasn't. The number of pellets in the target are what's important, and that's what you pointed out. Good Job.
@TheNewHuntersGuide
@TheNewHuntersGuide 2 года назад
@@bgdesignandsolutions Oh no, I just never thought about resin counting towards the shot weight, thus reducing pellet count per ounce. Which could mean other loads at the same ounce rating have more pellets. Now, I've yet seen another lead load come in at a close second to Long Beard, but if there was another contender out there, this could tilt the scales some toward them.

This wasn't exactly a definitive result but I did do this test. The formal answer though is it depends greatly on the gun. A good extended choke usually performs better than a stock recessed choke. But not always. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5aNXitA5Jho.html&

That is one of the tightest chokes on the market, and often tighter actually gets you worse results after a point. You should be good to go. The ammo actually matters more than the choke tube.

I'm fairly new to trap. Shoot Browning Invector Standard modified at 16-20 yards and shoot full usually over 20 yards, certainly at 23 and over. I've been curious about trying their X Full Turkey choke when I'm out 25-27 yards, maybe with a 1 1/8 #8 shot to hold the group together out farther. Is my logic really dumb? Any opinions appreciated.
@TheNewHuntersGuide

I think the turkey choke might handicap you at close range more than it's worth for clays. I'd go 7.5 shot if you are trying to take longer shots as well. That combo would likely work well but likely isn't worth the trade off.

If you shoot Long Beard XRs, with a good tube there is a monster difference. I shoot a Jebs Headhunter .660 with Long Beard XRs #6 or when I can fi d them Heavy Shot 18 #9s. Both give a core pattern about the size of your hand at 40 yards, no offense but those patterns are not loads I'd take in the woods if I had to make a 40 yard shot, I'd say 30 might be a stretch for them, like I said no offense.

What's tough there is they don't line up exactly constriction wise, and the Cremators are designed for steel shot where the Sporting clays are made for lead. Though I'm not sure how much difference there really is there. But if I can get some I'll give it a go. I'd like the test the Sporting Clays, vs the Cremators, vs the Delta, vs the Bismuth Bone buster

You said the shotgun hurt your face. I've got a shotgun I took the belt sander to the rear stock. It is wood. I lowered or increased the drop at comb. I also thinned the stock out where my face touched it. Now I just lay it to my face lightly and don't have to mash that pointed bone into it anymore to line my eye up with the barrel. I shoot much faster and more accurately and no shells give me the headache anymore.
@TheNewHuntersGuide
@TheNewHuntersGuide Год назад
Yea, I since learned that this shotgun really didn't fit me all that well. The length of pull was too long. My new shotgun fits my body much better. Hoping to see big improvements when I start testing turkey loads again soon. Although, I was shooting several of these videos in any given day, so I might shoot dozens of turkey loads. That's alot of turkeys loads for a day.
@jcann313
@jcann313 Год назад
@@TheNewHuntersGuide When I first got the shotgun I couldn't hit the side of the barn with it. It gave me a bad headache with any bird shot. After I got the fit right no headaches and fast accurate shots with an improved cylinder on quail. As far a really hard recoil, I learned not to shoot to many shells per day. Maybe a dozen at most. Then wait 3 or 4 days before shooting again. If shooting a pump, always grip the pump firmly so your hand don't slip. Never shoot it without your hand on the pump. It will kick considerably harder. Some people never realize this. Shooting from a bench without your hand on the pump, it will hurt.

@TheNewHuntersGuide
@TheNewHuntersGuide 2 года назад
The patterns themselves are really irrelevant to the test, what matters is the change in pattern between choke constrictions. But that said, it is all about how you look at it. The Long Beard pattern, even with the #4s is still better than any pattern that ever killed a turkey on planet earth before about 1985. We are spoiled with #9 TSS patterns today. Though to be fair, I still wouldn't use most of these shells to a hunt a turkey, nothing in this list is worthy except the long beard.

First thing you need to do is get some decent targets like shoot n see, not impressed at all.
@TheNewHuntersGuide
@TheNewHuntersGuide 2 года назад
Would you chip in to see fancier targets? I don't get paid for this. Every video costs me money to make. If they would add to the test, I might consider investing but when doing work like this, they become a distraction. The reason is that I never know where all these loads and chokes are going to pattern often it is the first and only time I'll shoot a particular combination. And shoot and see turkey targets are small. Half the time the bulk of the pattern would not be on the fancy reactive paper. Some targets might look better just because they pattern was in a certain place while the actual better patten might be off to the side on another. It creates a false impression which has become the currency of most RU-vid test videos. They are eye candy based not data based. They may shoot the same shot half a dozen times till they get it look great and make the point they want to make. I'm trying to learn and get data. Where the pattern is for these kinds of test doesn't matter because you can dial any gun you shoot into be on for the load you choose to make. But for testing lots of loads, it's not practical to do. I haven't seen any 30" reactive targets that are even close to what I can fit in my budget for this channel. For a test like this, you need 8 of them.
