Thank you my friend I am home based in Texas, but I work all over the world and I truly mean all over the world, wherever the Tower Crane takes me,, my Advice,, if you're young joined the Union it's a good thing, if you are an older operator I would not join the Union because you want every Dime you can get so that you may retire,,,, Oh and by the way by year's end our pay is going up can't find enough tower operators,,,,

We had a program for tower crane that started in the region where I operate. Alot if people got tickets and they can't run crane at all. All the practical was on a simulator, including the NCCCO test. Alot of them got thrown on high production jobs and then got run off pretty quick. Can't keep up with production speeds or tried to and were out of control. End result was quite a few "journeyman" tower operators that are now back on the ground rigging. The schooling was good for theory but was terrible for the actual practical aspect of running crane. People think it's an easy job then they get up there and are completely unprepared.

@@marktarver4218 Hey bruv thanks for the content! I have a question about getting started in crane operating. Is getting a CDL class A the first step in the process?

@@soccerking710 id say the first step is making sure that it something you really want. The next step id take is call my local union of Operating Engineers and ask them how to get on as an apprentice. In my experience if you have a cdl they are more likely to be interested immediately.

There are trade schools but I've never heard of actual college courses. It's not really a thing you can learn in a classroom setting. There's a piece of it that's class room based but most of it is in the field.

I wish I could but I don't know anyone in Kentucky. And as much as one might think operating a crane is not laborious, they are usually forgetting about building the crane. The jobs that are just sit and operate are few and far between in my experience and reserved for long time operators who are injured. It'll be very hard to get to that point with an injury like that. I will pray that a good opportunity for gainful employment comes for yall, maybe you could get into it rather than your husband? There are some badass female operators out there.

So. What's 100% of scale?
@marktarver4218
@marktarver4218 4 года назад
Operator base is like 28 or 29. But once you are at 100% your pay depends on the size crane you are running at the time. The lowest is somewhere in the 27-28 range and top scale is somewhere around 32. I have seen operators negotiate higher pays than the contract specifies or perks above the contract if they are skilled in something of particular value but when that happens they are usually on thin ice so to speak.

@@marktarver4218 I mean. What are some possible pitfalls of renting a crane and being the operator and going to bid work? Besides insurance. You don't need to own the equipment do you? thanks again.
@marktarver4218
@marktarver4218 4 года назад
@@ssquigglyboomt.v.594 well first of all if you are leasing you would have to rent your services for a much higher rate than you are leasing the crane for (obviously) which might put you out of contention for many jobs. There are big companies around here that are very competitive and you'd either be competing with them or dealing with trouble customers they don't want. If you don't already know people it may take a good while to build the relationships needed to stay busy enough to make your lease payments let alone any actual profit. Generally it takes companies a couple of years to get any traction at all and even then most burn out cause of mismanagement or poor business practices. If you don't have a well funded and well planned beginning you are almost guaranteed to fail. In my research and planning I found I would need at least 500k in capital to start up an operation with only myself running it and a tiny crane. That would be a scraping by bootstrapping type operation. 1 mil would be more appropriate. That's just a tiny piece of what my research told me. If you want more I'd have to either get with you or maybe do another video. I don't know if I'd necessarily want to give away that kind of information as I worked really hard to plan it out. In any case it is too much to go into typing a reply on my phone.

In my company no one is only a rigger. When a topped out operator goes on a job as a rigger he makes rigger scale which is around $28 per hour in my local I believe. So to answer your question it would vary from company to company or union hall to union hall. But generally speaking riggers get paid well.

If so, that's about a $10k increase every year for at least 4 years. If that is so, then you make $100k/ year.
