I wanted to prove (or disprove) to myself that small cutting / chopping / serving boards are worth making or not.
When visiting a friend recently they brought out a lovely little serving . cutting board and I immediately thought Ill make one of those for myself and then thought that maybe other people might like them / buy them as well.
So in this video I wanted to find out if I could make them, and make a profit on them.
Tools I used in this video:
(some of these links are associate links, I may (if I'm lucky) earn a small commission, however it won't cost you a penny (or cent) more, and thank you if you do. 👍

Any items you purchase from this page helps to support the channel by giving me a small kick back from Amazon.

I will keep adding to this as I get time to build a full list of the tools I use in my workshop.
Thanks for watching.

I have a beech dining table going to be recycled, most of the panels are between 19-25mm thick. Not enough to resaw, my bandsaw wouldn't handle it. But planning to make 2 Sided. Cutting board face, recess other face 15mm to make snack/nibbles tray/charcouterie board.

I like the sound of that. 👍

I don’t think you should add drying time for the glue because technically you can be cutting pieces for another cutting board while it’s drying, which would actually cut time down on your next board.

Very interesting, though I'm surprised you didn't at least have an attempt at cutting the excess off on the bandsaw and using the router table with the template for one of your boards, even if just for the sake of comparison. The cleanup would have been easier to boot.

You got a nice ribbon pattern in the beech, did you reverse pieces in glue up? How did timing & efficiency work out compared to your standard board with contrasting handles?
@GTWoodshop
@GTWoodshop 7 месяцев назад
Hi John, without the swapped handles obviously much quicker, however the contrasting handles really attract the potential customer where as the plain colour does not, at all. In fact it may well be worth a video in its own right just talking about the success and failures of boards for sale at craft shows.

Interesting. As you indicated I hope you can become more efficiency and thereby reduce time and increase profitability. Overall, Well Done.

How much time do you anticipate taking to sell each board? Probably as much as the time you spent making them.

Graham, great job on breaking things down. What is that constant knocking sound we hear occasionally in the background? It's oddly therapeutic...

Hi NW, thank you. The noise is made by the pump on my diesel heater and you're right its very comforting. 😁
