I like this new generations disconnecton from money. In the past it would be unheard of to even tell your friends what you earn. This is much more healthy

It also helps that with residency it’s pretty much standardized across the board, but i agree. I never understood the taboo of saying your income...

I appreciate the transparency of the numbers. Seems like the hospital is hiring you for slave wages as a “resident” to get discounted help and treatment from you. The 600$ annual food and 500$ CE is insultingly low. I like the talk about student loans. I think it’s important to highlight as a contrast to the high wages a doctor can make.

Thank you, and yes, we are a slave to the hospital and to our loans. Don't get me wrong, I am grateful for the opportunity to learn and train in this environment but hospitals know this is our only way to payback our loans and they take advantage of it for sure.

This is an amazing vid Ethan! Thank you for sharing this as this is important for people going into medical school and people in medical school to realistically gauge how much they'll be making to pay off their loans and deal with living expenses! I've been watching your vids since you were in undergrad and you definitely inspired me to keep grinding to reach and finish med school (MS3 here). P.S. been seeing the comments and from my years of following you, I'm pretty sure you're a doctor who graduated with an MD degree and has passed the licensure examinations to treat and care for other people. Great video, love your content Ethan! Would you say it's been worth it so far, having all this debt, going thru the years of schooling, and still having to wait another four years before you can really start making any money and any progress towards paying off your loans? I know passion is what's most important but there's no way I could handle all the debt lol. I'm the first person in my family to graduate from college, and I busted my ass for the four years to graduate with zero debt, and it just honestly felt like I wasted four years of my life. Just curious on your thoughts about all of this... maybe a future video idea, idk haha.
@doctor_ej
@doctor_ej 3 года назад
There are a lot of layers to the answer of this question, and maybe I can expand on this in a future vid, but for a short answer I would say so far yes. I find enjoyment in what I do (definitely not all the time and the hours do suck), but honestly I don't regret my decision. Hypothetically if everything were wiped away (including loans) and I lost my license, would I do the whole journey over again? Probably not haha. It is a taxing journey that I think 1x is more than enough to go through.

Would you refinance? I know residents with 350-400k in debt so your debt is still decent lol I would like future videos on your strategies on paying it off!
@joshmcgoo
@joshmcgoo 3 года назад
if you refinance you need to start doing minimum payments, which is a lot on a resident's salary. You also don't qualify for PSLF if you refinance. Most people wait until after residency to refinance.
@hayitsj21
@hayitsj21 3 года назад
@@joshmcgoo Oh, interesting. Good to know, thanks!
@doctor_ej
@doctor_ej 3 года назад
I will probably refi my private loans with sallie mae as this loan isn't elligble for any type of repayment program, but like Josh said, I most likely won;'t refi until after residency and then I will make aggressive payments. I'm not interested in any PSLF program. I don't trust waiting 10 years to hope my loans are forgiven by the end of it because things can always change. I will address this in a future vid! If I were to refi my fed loans now, I would potentially still have to make greater payments than what I have to make now through one of the fed repayment programs (REPAY, REPAYE, IBR, etc.)

I want to start working in Switzerland as I speak German and french but did my studies in Germany which is really cheap. I was able to even save money from jobs during my medical studies
@bruhhmomentumm
@bruhhmomentumm 3 года назад
Its not all about the money sure, but it's not all about passion either. It's a bit of both. In America, it's a $200-250k decision. Even if one agrees to make the decision to become a physician, it's not guaranteed. It would be irresponsible to just make such a heavy decision before thinking about the money just because you like it. With that logic, I would just stay home, lay in bed, and watch movies all day because that's my passion lol.

Do you guys get to moonlight after intern year? Never really know how much that pays
@doctor_ej
@doctor_ej 3 года назад
There are 3 criteria I think we have to meet to moonlight. 1.Pass step 3 and obtain our full license. 2. Score above 25th percentile on our yearly in-training exam 3. I believe pass all rotations intern year. Luckily I have already done #2, I probably wont take step 3 until early summer this year. But yeah most moonlighting opportunities pay around ~$100/hr and you have plenty of time to work multiple shifts a week 2nd and 3rd year. It is possible to make a big dent in your loans with moonlighting during residency,

@@hayitsj21 Ive never seen residents introduce themselves to patients as “doctors”(Im a med student). Its a clear distinction.
@hayitsj21
@hayitsj21 3 года назад
@@MrDyssonance What... Once you graduate med school you have a doctorate degree, you automatically get the title Dr. in front of your name. That's the same with PhD graduates. I've heard residents introduce themselves as "Hi, I'm Dr._________ and I'm a resident working with Dr. _________." You wouldn't say that when you're doing rotations but as a resident, you are a doctor. It's pretty clear you're a student.
@doctor_ej
@doctor_ej 3 года назад
That's odd... I always introduce myself to patients as doctor. Attendings introduce me as dr. and call me dr. in front of other staff. All staff on campus address me as dr. How do residents introduce themselves where you study? Hi, I'm Resident "X"? Honest question because I've never heard of this before. And no where in the title does it say attending salary 😁. Regardless if you were expecting to see an attending salary, I did disclose how much attendings usually make as well.
